Festive Greetings.

We hope that your Christmas festivities have gone well and you received some gifts that you really wanted. Trouble is if someone bought you clothes they will expect to see you wearing them, (hands up if you got a jersey that you will wear once then hide it at the back of the cupboard never to be seen again).
As this newsletter is published before January 1st may we remind members that seats cannot be reserved on New Years Eve.

Room Hire.

Room hire brings in much needed revenue to the club. The concert room bookings for 2009 are going well. We have at least one booking for every month, some months we only have one vacant Saturday night available.
If you have a Birthday, Wedding, Engagement or Anniversary planned for this year get your booking in now. (Please note we do not accept bookings for eighteenth birthdays). The cost to hire the room is £120 so if you have something to arrange, get in touch with Barry quickly.

The Concert Room is also available Sunday mornings for Christenings.
Smaller rooms are available mid-week for all sorts of events and meetings. If you have a group that is looking for a new venue, we have rooms available.

Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne" is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. It is well-known in many English-speaking countries, and it is often sung to celebrate the start of the new year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day.
The song's (Scots) title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago"[1] or "days gone by". “In the days of auld lang syne” as the equivalent of “Once upon a time.” The last line of the chorus is frequently mis-sung by crowds and untrained groups as "for the sake of Auld Lang Syne". It is rarely, if ever, incorrectly performed by trained choirs.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a right good willie-waught,,
For auld lang syne.

The new Treasure Chest.

A new treasure chest will start on January 11th.

The purpose of the new treasure chest is to raise money to help pay for the club’s entertainment and senior citizen’s and life member’s functions.

Each new jackpot will start at £100.00.
Tickets will be sold for £1.00 per strip of five.

Half of the money from ticket sales will go into the treasure chest fund to be paid out if the treasure chest is opened.

£25.00 will be paid out each week as a consolation to the person who wins the key but cannot open the chest.

All remaining monies will be used for the purposes of the treasure chest as stated above.

The draw will be made every Sunday at about 21.15. The winning ticket must be presented by 23.00 on the same day.

The number of keys will start at 21 and will reduce on a weekly basis until only 3 keys are left. They will remain at this number until the treasure chest is opened.

Committee members will not hold tickets for people who are not in the club when the draw is made.

Christmas Decorations.

This year members have had nothing but good things to say about our Christmas decorations. One member Pete Hammond suggested we donate the old ones to Northampton Council to brighten up Abington Street.

Obituary

Sadly we have to report the death of Jim Prigmore. Our sympathy goes to his children Mandy, Clare and Steve. His grandchildren, other family and friends.

World War Two shipmates reunited.

For almost two years, Northampton born Kingsley Park WMC member Gavin Field and Peter Dugan, from Slough, were shipmates and friends with a Royal Navy flotilla during World War Two.
And after landing on the French coast together on D-Day, June 1944, the pair were demobilised at the end of the war and parted company, neither knowing what became of the other.
For almost 65 years, not a word passed between them, until a chance finding in a Landing Craft Association magazine led to the reunion of the two men and their families.
Gavin, now aged 85 and a grandfather of four, from Northampton, spotted Peter's name in an article in The Kedge Hook magazine after reading it in Kingsley Working Men's Club.
He managed to track down Peter with the help of the magazine and the two finally met this summer.
"I didn't know he existed since 1945, we're still having a job to believe it," Gavin said.
"We never got demobbed together and we got split up. He was my friend for nearly two years serving in the Navy.
"He finished doing work in the Navy and I went to the military hospital in Southampton.
"There were 40,000 boats on D-Day and there were six boats in each flotilla. I was in LCI 380 and Pete was in 379, and we still didn't know from 1945 that we were still here.
"He's a remarkable fellow and I couldn't describe how good a shipmate he was. Isn't it funny that it happens to be somewhere near November 11? It wasn't worked like that."
Gavin’s medals sit alongside his father's from World War One as well as an intact bully beef biscuit sent home to Northampton.
Gavin said he talked to Peter about their friendship when they were reunited in Derby.
"You never want to discuss the bad side of war. There's no glory in it. It's remarkable when you think we were only 17 and 18, and there's people who fight in wars and are dead and buried."

Obituary.

We regret to announce the passing of Len Dunford on 5th November 2008.
Len joined the Club in 1984 and has been a regular and loyal member of the Cribbage section since that time.
He will be especially missed by his team-mates.
The condolences of the Committee and members are offered to his wife and children.

Redtooth Poker.

Congratulations to Luke Borer who has won our first ever redtooth poker tournament. Mark Knight was second. Lonnie Consodine joins them for wining the play off for third place. They now go on to the redtooth regional final, which is being held at the Kingsley Park WMC on Sunday 7th December.

Welfare Payout

The December 2008 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on
Fridays between 7.00pm and 9.00pm & Sundays between 11.00am and 1.00pm
during December, commencing on Sunday 7th December 2008.
The next Welfare Payments will be made in March 2009.

Saturday Morning Pictures.

How would you like to treat your little darlings to a trip to the pictures on a Saturday Morning?
Before we go to the expense of laying this on, we need to know if you would be interested.
What we are thinking is perhaps showing two films and giving a bottle of pop all for £1.00.
The concert room bar will be open for crisps and sweets.
We would ask parents to stay in the main bar, or indeed stay with their children (at no extra cost) so any child would have immediate access to their parents if for any reason their children wanted them.
If you would support this by bringing your children please let anyone in the entertainment section of the committee have your name.
We will let you know in the next newsletter if this is going ahead and if so we anticipate getting things going round about the middle of January 09.
E.C.

Now it has become personal!

For months we have been talking about and reading about "the credit crunch" "the global slowdown" "recession" and all sorts of other fancy titles indicating the world is in deep s***.
The theory and fancy talk is now over. What we are seeing is our members losing their jobs and finding it harder and harder to put food on the table and keep up with the mortgage. It is personal and from what we hear for the next year or so the pain will continue.
What we as a Committee want you all to know is that through the hard times Kingsley Park Working Men's Club is here for its members.
You do not have to spend an arm and a leg at the club. Four people coming to play snooker just need to put 50 pence in each to have an hour at the table. Our pool tables are available for just 50 pence a game. We do not mind if you just want a cup of coffee or tea, though we would hope you could go to a pint or two if not driving. You can join friends for a game of cards or dominoes. If enough turned up we could even have some daytime knockouts. If mums and tots wanted somewhere to get together in the day, we could look at opening a room for you and helping with things like colouring books and crayons.
What we are saying is that we open at 11 o'clock every day and we are here for our members.
If you are affected and have free time on your hands, come to the club and pass a couple of hours just getting away from it all.
If you want an organised activity during the day such as Mums and Tots or some sort of game competition, come and see the Secretary, Barry to discuss. Give him a bell on 01604 719800 to make sure he will be in.
Now is the time when we believe the true value of a Working Men's Club comes into its own. We still have to cover our overheads to keep going and put something in the kitty for survival necessities; but as seen by our recent cut in beer prices; we will move heaven and earth for our members.

Farewell Jim and Margaret.

After about twenty years loyal service to the club Jim Smith and Margaret Reynolds have decided to call it a day.
After such a long time they have become part of the fabric of the club and they will be sorely missed by many members who have enjoyed Jim's smiling good nature and Margaret's very individual sense of humour.
We would like to thank them for all they have done in their joint 40 years of service and wish them well for the future.
