Special Charity Event.

Kingsley Park WMC is proud to bring to you a Charity Race Night on Saturday May 2nd.. Come along and enjoy a night at the races and support, The Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA).

The WNAA is a registered charity and relies totally on donations and sponsorship. The average cost per mission is around £850 and the annual running cost of the service is over £1.4 million.

Budget Increase.

The Chancellor has announced an increase in duty that adds one penny upwards to the cost of a pint. Under normal circumstances this would mean an increase of 3 to 5 pence a pint to maintain margins.
The Committee has decided that the cost will be absorbed and bar prices will not go up as a result of this duty increase.

For the club to absorb these costs successfully, it needs its members to support it to the full.

Loyalty breads success and we are here to succeed.

Special Meeting.

At the special meeting the motion to change the rule was passed unanimously. Members will now be able to vote on the committee elections on the Friday evening, Saturday lunchtime, Saturday evening and Sunday dinnertime. Lets hope more members find the time to vote.

Life Members and Pensioners Outing.

There is still a few places available for our trip to Stratford-upon-Avon and Coventry. Members must collect five vouchers from five separate visits to the club. There is still enough time to do this, but to ensure your seat register your interest now with John or Dave at the welfare table.

Smoking Area.

It has come to our attention that members have been abusing the smoking area. The club has spent over £7,500 to provide you with a comfortable place to enjoy your cigarette. A couple of years ago we spent £50,000 doing up the gents toilets. Some members have been getting the two mixed up.

Insanity Rules The Day.

The CIU Annual General Meeting at Blackpool was, to say the least, interesting. The meeting agreed to a review of our National and Branch structures to make both relevant to the modern day situation with just over 2000 clubs as opposed to just over 4000 clubs in the 1970’s.

There was a very detailed and good address from the Manchester Branch decrying the appalling way the Government is treating our clubs. It was surprising that there was not a long queue of delegates waiting to support the Branch.

The insanity came in when we discussed a review of the pass card and club annual fee. The proposal was that the pass card should be reduced in price from £3.00 to £2.00. The change would mean the enforcement of the current rule that all full members of every club would be required to buy the pass card. The annual club fee for membership of the Union should change from 30 pence per male member to a flat £100.00 plus VAT per club.

The result of adopting this review would be that individual clubs would benefit to the tune of about half a million pounds in total. The very smallest of clubs could be worse off by a maximum of £10.00 a year. Does not half a million pounds in individual clubs’ coffers make sense?

It would also mean about half a million pounds extra in the coffers of Branches that work so tirelessly to support clubs. With many Branches struggling against the odds to make ends meet, does that not make sense?

It would also mean about half a million pounds going to central funds and supporting the holiday and convalescent centre. With the stock market in depression and our national account partners finding it ever harder to support us, does that not make sense?

About 51% of delegates said yes, but two thirds were needed to pass the motion.

The financial security of our whole movement has been put even more at risk because we did not have the courage to insist across the board that every member of every club should support their clubs and movement to the tune of £2.00 per year plus a one-off three pounds for an associate card that lasts for life.

We at Kingsley have for many years been proud that all our members have a pass card. Indeed most of the Northampton clubs and the vast majority of clubs in our Branch are like us. We all help the Union and ourselves by so doing.

If the motion had been approved, our club would have benefited to the tune of about £1000 and every pass cardholder would have saved a pound a year.

The insanity is that delegates do not like the word compulsory and seem to think two pounds is beyond reason. There were even rumours of clubs leaving the Union if this were passed. That is insanity! And it ruled!

The truly distressing thing about this is that if our club members across the land are not willing to pay fees of just two pounds a year, the message going out is that our clubs are not worth £2.00 a year to secure their future.

Without a doubt this is not the case. Our clubs are the jewel in the crown of modern day society and the sooner members across the land acknowledge that and are prepared to show that the better off we will all be. Time is short. In the absence of accepting this brilliant notice of motion, next year we must call on all members of all clubs to voluntarily purchase a pass card to help secure the future of our Union.

Sorry about the soap-box, but as Secretary of this club; President of the South East Midlands Branch and the Branch’s National Executive Representative I must use every opportunity to support our movement; and where better to start than at home by thanking you for your unfailing loyalty to Club and Union as part of a small majority that must get bigger.

Obituaries.

Sadly we have to report the deaths of Fred Taylor and Albert Sanderson.
Our thoughts are with their familys and friends.

Air-Gun,

Congratulations to R Worster from the A team who won the singles and to B mason from the Wanderes who was runner-up.

Albert (Ocker) Sanderson R.I.P.

Albert reputably got his nickname in his football days, it was said he was a bit of an “ocker” when he played for the Roadmender.
Albert started to box at the age of 10 and by the time he was 17 he had progressed so far as to beat the RAF bantamweight champion to win the "Silver Wing" trophy.
Whilst in the navy during the war, he represented the eastern fleet. This was where he first encountered the champion of Ceylon, Perara, who narrowly out-pointed him. Over a two year period they met five more times, with Albert finally getting the better of him at the Seymour Hall, London in a match that displayed "Perara's brilliant boxing" and Albert's "clever and hard two-handed body punching" which eventually led to Perara's defeat.
One of out members Bill White was once his corner-man.
Albert was by this time Midland Champion. He out-pointed the Welsh Champion to reach the ABA semi-final at the Albert Hall. (Not named after our Albert unfortunately!) He was defeated by the London Champion, Danny O'Sullivan, but so impressed the selectors that he was chosen to represent Britain in the European Boxing Championships held in Dublin. He came a brilliant third, and went on to represent England against Switzerland and Great Britain against Ireland. Again impressing the selectors, he was chosen as a representative in the 1948 Olympic Games. He had also been asked to attend the "Golden Gloves" tournament in the USA, but by this time had decided to turn professional. His professional career lasted for six years, during which he had some 45 fights and reached the list of "Top Ten British Bantamweights".
Albert’s working career included a spell as a bricklayer; he went on to work for Piano Forte supplies as a charge hand until 1974 when he moved Bostrom Cab Seating until he retired 18 years ago. Albert and his wife Joyce celebrated their golden wedding in the club in 2006; they were together for 62 years.

As we move into May they are only 8 or 9 free Saturdays when the concert room has not been hired. If you have something to arrange, get in touch with Barry quickly. The cost to hire the room is £120.
The Concert Room is also available to every morning, and Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
Smaller rooms are available by arrangement for all sorts of events and meetings.
