Subscriptions 2012
Membership subscriptions for 2012 have been affected by the increase cost of the pass card that was voted in at the Annual General Meeting of the Working Men's Club & Institute Union in Blackpool on 9th April.
The motion to put the Pass Card up to £3.50 including VAT from £2.55 plus VAT was passed by the two-thirds majority required. With the different VAT treatment this is an increase to the CIU of only 36 pence.
The subscription for all members for 2012 will therefore be £8.50 per member, be they male, female or over 65. Life members will only have to pay £3.50 for their pass card.

Subscriptions shall be taken in January as follows:

Sundays 8th 15th 22nd 29th from 11.00 to 13.00
Mondays 9th 16th 23rd 30th from 19.30 to 21.00
Tuesdays 10th 17th 24th 31st from 19.30 to 21.00
Wednesdays 11th 18th 25th from 19.30 to 21.00
Fridays 13th 20th 27th from 19.30 to 21.00
Saturdays 14th 21st 28th from 12.00 to 13.30

Members who have not paid by the end of January become members in arrears and cannot enter the club or use its facilities until they come in to pay their subs at the following times in February.

Sundays 5th 12th 19th 26th from 12.00 to 13.00
Mondays 6th 13th 20th 27th from 19.30 to 21.00

Those who have not paid by 28th February cease to be members in accordance with the rules.
You may pay in person at one of the above sessions or a friend or fellow member may pay on your behalf. They just need to bring your red or white membership card. You may pay by cheque through the post enclosing your membership card and a stamped self-addressed envelope. If you are having difficulty in arranging payment by the due date please contact the Secretary. We do not want to lose one member through non-payment of subscriptions

Snooker Cues.

There area lot of snooker cues belonging to members past and present in the snooker room that have not been used in years. Following repairs to the wall we no longer have the racks on which to store them. If they are yours or you know to whom they belong to, please arrange to have them moved. Any cues left over after one month will be sold off for charity

Welcome Keith Pollitt.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Keith as our Steward. He comes with a great pedigree having recently been awarded the honour of Cellar Manager of the year by CAMRA in Milton Keynes.

It is early days yet but your Committee has every confidence that he will prove an invaluable asset to the club and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial association.
We would also like to thank Mark and Nathan who so valiantly held the fort while we were looking for a new steward.

Mini Tote & Treasure Chest.
There will be no Mini Tote or Treasure Chest in the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year. Tickets will be back on sale on Monday 2nd January for the next draw.

Welfare Payout.
The December 2011 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during September, commencing on Sunday 4th December 2011. The next Welfare Payments will be made in March 2012.

Obituaries.
Dave Hewit A lunchtime regular who would often join in the card school. Our condolences go to his family and friends.

Tommy Leonard A bingo regular, well known and loved by his Irish friends, condolences to his wife Mary and family.

Alexander (Sandy) Rankin 87. Our thoughts are with his wife Sheila, daughters Sharon and Jean & other family and friends.

Could we ask members who will become life members in 2012 to claim their life membership this year so we can get cards ready when they come in to pay their subs rather than send them away to come back later.

Children’s Pantomime.

This years pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk takes place in the concert room on Saturday 17th December 2010 from 2pm to 4:15pm.
Tickets are free for member’s children and grandchildren only and will be available in November as follows;

"WHAT is a Working Men's Club?"

Sometimes dating back more than 100 years, they are to often places which modern leisure seekers do not even think of visiting or so it seems from the dwindling membership and falling attendance figures suffered by many venues.
Many people were shocked when they read a recent story in the Chronicle & Echo which stated the Far Cotton Working Men's Club which had been running for 104 years could soon close unless immediate financial help is found.
Crunch time came on Monday 24th October, when members turned out in force to vote against the proposed closure of the club.
More than 150 of the club’s 500 members attended the meeting and the majority voted against the proposal to dissolve the club.
Chairman of the committee, Kath Dawes, said: “The motion was put to the members and they rejected the proposal to dissolve the club. Now comes the hard work to keep the club open.”
She said the smoking ban, the recession and a 10-day closure imposed by Northampton Borough Council’s licensing authority earlier this year, following a problem with a temporary event notice, had all contributed to the club’s struggle. She added: “We now need to generate some serious cash into the club to keep it open.
“Members are trying to come up with ideas. We need members and the community to give one last big push to save the club.

But what has happened to make life so difficult for working men's clubs today? Kathleen said: "The smoking ban has really affected a lot of people. People think why should I go out and stand in the cold and smoke? They can go to the supermarket, buy something to drink, stay home and drink that. "I think mainly it is because of smoking but also they keep increasing the prices of the budget on beer and the breweries pass on the increases to us. Our prices aren't dear but we do need some that are cheaper."
She continued: "We do have a good amount of support. People have been saying 'we don't want the club to shut' but I say 'it is not down to me, it is down to the members'. We have nearly 500 members and if some of them visited it even one day a week it would be a real boost."
The club is working hard to keep people attending, Kathleen's husband 50 year old Trevor, a trustee, said he joined the club when he was 18.
He said: "We used to go when we were kids, we were not allowed into pubs. It was a lot busier but then there were more houses here, and we had Airflow Streamlines having its union meetings here and other unions had their meetings here. "We always had entertainment on but obviously we have had to. It is still well used and we have a lot of younger members now as they can't take kids into pubs."

Although Kingsley Park Working Men's Club still has an active social scene, membership figures have fallen over the last decade according to general secretary Barry Slasberg, who is also on the national executive'.
He said: "At one stage 10 years ago we had 2,600 or 2,700 members and now we still have about 2,000 members. Numbers are declining but we have to fight for our members by providing what they want."
But governmental decisions have made life tough for WMC’s, according to Barry. He said: "The Government seems hell-bent on impacting on our organization, under the Gambling Act, for example. Families used to play bingo in the WMC, kids would come along with parents who looked over their shoulders. Everyone had a laugh. Under the Gambling Act all of a sudden children weren't allowed to play bingo as it is gambling; but it is no such thing, it is just a fun activity."
He added: "The smoking ban is still having a huge effect on working men's clubs and pubs and businesses. There is a big movement called SOP AC (Save Our Pubs And Clubs). We don't want the smoking ban dissolved but we want the facility to have a smoking room where available.
"There is nothing illegal about smoking, it is a legal pastime which should be allowed."

Meanwhile at Monks Park Working Men's Club in Northampton, the social scene is still going well with 1,480 members, according to secretary Don Harris.
He believes some clubs need to put more effort into the management of their venues, treating them as businesses, despite the fact they are not-for-profit.
He said: "You are not allowed to make a profit but you have to take it in the right direction. People have it in their heads it is just a working men's club but it has to be managed like a business.
"I think we are one of the successful working men's clubs and the smoking ban has not affected us.
"If you have the wrong steward in, things can crumble. In the past it used to be family oriented, your dad would be the steward and mum the secretary and they might not have experience in that field. You need someone in place who knows what they are doing, whether that is pulling a pint or managing the staff and customers,"
He added: "I think the image of working men's clubs could do with a spruce up. It still carries the stigma of being an old person's club. That would help I'm sure."
Emergency Exits & Fire Doors.

Emergency exits must be kept clear at all times. It has been brought to the committees attention that children have been playing on the back stairs between the games room and the ladies toilets, not only have been drawing on the walls but been using stones from the garden to make holes in the walls. Children have been running all over the club including the concert room and games rooms playing hide and seek and tag. We welcome children in the club but only if their parents keep them under control and in their sight at all times.
Fire doors are clearly marked and must be kelp closed at all times. The back stairs between the games room and the ladies toilets are a fire escape and should be treated as such. Not as a short cut from the games room to the smoking area.

Draw takes place Tuesday 6th December at 8pm. Prizes to be claimed by Friday 24th December.

Cabaret Night Cancelled.

Due to lack of ticket sales we have cancelled the Cabaret Night that was due to take place on Saturday 22nd of October there will be a full refund on returned tickets. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
We have lined up a fabulous group The Classics in the bar and we are sure that anyone turning up will not be disappointed.

The Cask Marque and CAMRA groups are hosting the National Cask Ale Week between 1st & 9th October.

We have decided to take part in this event supplementing our permanent range of ale with up to 8 extra guest ales.

As with all Cask Marque accredited outlets there will be a chance to sample a small taster to tempt your taste buds into buying a few pints.
For further details please ask Mark or Nathan behind the bar or look at the blackboards.

Tickets for this years raffle are now on sale priced at £1:00 for a book of five. You can purchase tickets at the welfare table, from the doorman or from behind the bar.
Draw takes place Tuesday 6th December at 8pm. Prizes to be claimed by Friday 24th December.
Charity Raffle of unclaimed prizes Monday December 26th December.

Committee Vacancies.

There are currently three casual vacancies on the Committee. Volunteers are asked to put their names forward to help steer the club to a secure and bright future. This is a task for people with time to commit, especially at weekends (But not necessarily every weekend!). It is a task for people who believe in our great club and all it stands for. It is a task for the dedicated and not for the faint hearted.
If you are interested and have been a member since before the first of April 2011, please see the General Secretary for more details. All these vacancies are open to both men and women members.

Mini Tote.

Ticket sales have been slow the past few weeks so we are taking this opportunity to remind members they can win a fantastic £150 for a 50p stake. Tickets are on sale every lunchtime and on Friday and Sunday nights from the welfare table. At all other times they are on sale from behind the bar. The draw is made Sunday at 1pm and you can check the results on our Facebook page.

Children’s Pantomime.

This years pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk takes place in the concert room on Saturday 17th December 2010 from 2pm to 4:15pm.
Tickets are free for member’s children and grandchildren only and will be available in November as follows;

After all expenses were paid out we raised £60 for children in need. We thank the few people that supported us on the night. MG who has still to claim their prize won the race card, which we ran in conjunction with the night. If the prize remains unclaimed it will be added to the CIN fund

The Young Team.

Jay Cattell 21 Garry Matthews 20, Dan Byrne 17 and Connor Singleton 14 have got together and formed a team to play in the Northampton Town Snooker League. They are playing as Kingsley C come along on Tuesday nights and give them your support.
It is good to see the youngsters getting involved, as they are our future.
Our pool ladies darts and ladies skittle teams have also got a few youngsters representing them.

Games News

Kingsley’s darts team were well beaten in the final at Corby by Irthingbourgh. Although Kev Brown gave us a good start by winning the first two legs we just could not get going. Kev hit a couple of 140’s Dan Eaton had 5 scores over 120 and had the highest score on the night with 145. Steve Burgess had a couple of tons Don Ward had two 140’s and four more scores of 100 or over and Martin Gamble had six scores of 100 or more and all lost their games along with Jeff Billingham. Jim Fowell did not play his legs, as the match had already been lost.

It was a much closer match in the final of the Cribbage with Kingsley narrowly loosing their final.

Kenny Andrews was also unlucky in the regional finals of the poker. He tells us if he had not played his final hand and had hung on for 30 seconds he would have finished in the top 10 and would have qualified for the next phase. But 11th place out of the hundreds of players is a honourable achievement.

Welfare Payout.

The September 2011 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during September, commencing on Sunday 4th September 2011.

The next Welfare Payments will be made in December 2011.

Election Result.
The election for club President took place 19th to 21st August with the following result: - Jenny Anderson 19 votes, Bob Horner 66 votes. Lewis Sander 7 votes, Angie Wright 2 votes.

Bob Horner was duly elected. Our congratulations go to him and the other candidates who were willing to take on the onerous task of being Club President.
Out of a total membership of about 2000, less than 5% voted. Considering every member is a part owner of the club, this does seem a little on the low side considering the importance of the position to the good management of the club.

The Great Tetley Cask Comeback!
A few months ago the taste of Tetley Cask changed and the change was not welcomed by many of our members. The change of taste was due to a change of location for brewing using different water and nothing to do with our service or cellar maintenance.

We had the chief Carlsberg brewer visit us to look into our quality and presentation and he was delighted with what he saw at the club.

It has been encouraging to see recently that more of us are beginning to enjoy Tetley Cask once again. However Carlsberg are keen to see their top cask bitter back at the top of our cask drinkers' favourite list and are quite prepared to put their money where their mouth is.

From 1st to 30th September inclusive a prize draw ticket will be given for every pint of Tetley Cask purchased.

On 2nd October at 2.00pm there will be a prize draw. The first prize will be £350 Capital Bonds and the second prize will be £150 Capital Bonds all with the compliments of Carlsberg.

Carlsberg are convinced that those who stick with Tetley Cask for a month will stay with it for life.
Only time will tell, but we can only thank Carlsberg for their genuine act of wooing their faithful back into the Tetley Cask fold.

Don't listen to the rumour mill!
In recent years we have had some very difficult times and those difficult times are far from being over. It has been the policy of management to keep the membership informed through the newsletter of all the club news both good and bad.

I had the great pleasure of doing the weekly shop at Morrisons the other week with my beloved wife and I was stopped by two members who asked why we were in so much trouble that we had to call a special members' meeting to discuss the future of the club.

I cannot understand why people start these malicious rumours that I think most clubs in Northampton have been subject to over the decades I have been part of the club movement. Suffice to say no such meeting is warranted, nor has one been discussed by the Executive Committee at any time.
It is true that the club is having another difficult year that is only to be expected with the current financial position the whole country is facing, but this is being supported by the money we received from HMRC as previously reported.

With expenses being cut to the minimum, it is clear that the current problems arise because many of our members simply do not have the money to spend they had a year ago.

The EC still look to diversify and find other streams of income to support members without putting a further burden of bar price increases on those loyal to the club.
As previously reported, the CIU is constantly fighting for the benefit of every single club.
Finally, I would once again stress that every single one of our two thousand members are equal owners of this club. If just 10% of those members came up with a new and innovative idea on how to fully utilise our club, success would certainly be assured. The EC would discuss any idea put forward and, if it thought it would benefit the club, would be responsible for implementing the idea. So do not hold back from coming forward simply because you do not have time to work in the club or see the idea through yourself. The suggestion box; the letter box; emails and personal contact are all welcomed. Please do not be shy or anonymous.

Urgent Notice 7th August 2011.
The Northampton Licensing Sergeant, Mark Worthington, issued a letter on 2nd August with a strong warning about supply of alcohol.

The relevant paragraphs are as follows: -

Please ensure that a strong message is sent out ..... To all to all your members that WMC’s must abide by their rules and that they are only open to members (including associates) and bona-fide guests.
We will give you a few weeks to ensure your members get their clubs in order and then we will start enforcement action and it may be that if this advice is not heeded then some CPC’s may be brought before the licensing committee for review.(this could close us!!)

(The above does not apply where Temporary Event Notices are in place or for private members parties where the temporary members’ rule applies.)

Also there can be no sale/supply of alcohol to anyone under the age of 18.

Under these circumstances we have no option but to instruct our staff that if they are in any doubt about a person’s membership they must ask for membership cards before serving alcohol.

We urge all members to carry their cards when they come to the club just in case they are not recognised by staff, as we cannot risk losing our Club Premises Certificate.

Obituaries.
We are so sorry to announce the untimely death of Donna Morgan.
Just coming up to her 23rd birthday and with a year old baby, she had her whole life ahead of her when she was involved in a fatal car accident.

Donna worked for the club behind the bar for almost three years. In recent months she had seemed to blossom into a very happy and always smiling young woman.

Fellow workers and members alike will miss her.

Our condolences and thoughts go to her family at this tragic time.

John Fitzgerald. John up to a few years ago played 25’s for the club, his wife Jean is a regular on bingo nights. Out thoughts are with his family and friends.

Danny Mullan Always had a laugh when he was in the club. Our condolences to his wife Barbara, children Alison, Charlotte, Stuart, Danielle and his other family and friends.

Games News.
Kingsley Park’s darts team progressed to the final of the CIU darts KO with a hard fought win over Daventry WMC in what turned out to be the very close game that everyone had anticipated. Kingsley this year gaining revenge by turning last years 11-10 defeat into an 11-10 victory.

The match was poised at 5 legs to 4 to Daventry before Kev Brown proved what an invaluable addition to the squad he is by following his 3-0 win in the previous round with another 3-0 win to put Kingsley into the lead 7-5 going into the 5th game.

Kingsley’s Steve Burgess extending the lead to 9 legs to 6 before Daventry came back putting the pressure on Kingsleys last 2 players. One leg apiece from Danny Eaton and Don Ward though was enough to clinch the game on the 20th leg.
Daventry had the last word and pulled the score back to 11-10 (a respectable defeat by a 1 leg margin)
Kingsley now progress to the final on Sept 10th to be held in Corby.

Our President stands down.On 7th July Graham Burgess tendered his resignation as President with immediate effect. Graham stated that he had enjoyed his tenure as President and was retiring for personal reasons.
Graham was elected as President in 2007. Since that time he has been a positive influence in leading the management through difficult times. His sense of duty and loyalty to the club has been an example to us all. He has never shied from difficult decisions, always putting the welfare of members and the survival of the club before going for the popularity vote.
We thank Graham for his four years of service and look forward to his company in the club for many years to come.
There will be an election to fill the casual vacancy that has arisen on 19th 20th and 21st August. Any men or women members who were members at the beginning of 2011 are eligible to stand for office. The nomination sheet will be posted in the main bar by Friday 29th July. It will be taken down noon 15th August. Every person standing must be proposed and seconded by two members, men or women, who were members on 1st January 2011.
Once a name is on the nomination sheet it can only be removed by the General Secretary on direct instruction from the person nominated.

Club Rules.
The Club Rules form the basis of a contract between each member and the club to which that member belongs.
In recent years, due to legislation and the wishes of members through special meeting those rules have been changed in some minor ways, but also to acknowledge the introduction of the Equality Act.
Because of the ongoing changes, we did not update the rules until we could see a period of reasonable stability. As a result , some new members will not have been issued with the rules on joining the club. We have now had the new rules printed. They are available to members on request from the Secretary.

These new rules do not affect in any great detail the actual day to day membership rules and therefore members with old rules need not apply for the new ones; however they are available if required.

An apology from the Secretary?
Certainly stranger things have happened! My article about the life members’ outing in the last newsletter certainly raised more than a few hackles. Those who challenged me in the bar all said how much they enjoyed the outing and that they never complained about anything. Not once in the article did I say anyone complained about the outing.The moans I addressed were those that are addressed to committee members year after year on the outing and I hope I gave a reasoned response to those moans. I also hope that those who got past the heading found the responses reasoned and informative.
To those of you who were affronted because you have never complained about anything on any outing, I do indeed offer my sincere apologies for the heading of the article, but I do hope you found the content worth reading.

S E Midlands CIU Darts KO.
Kingsley park’s darts team followed up their recent 14-7 demolition of Newport Pagnell WMC in the earlier round with another emphatic win, this time a quarter final win over Towcester Sports and Social, coming out the eventual winners by 16 games to 5.

Four Kingsley Park player’s, Dan Eaton, Steve Burgess, Arthur Dunkley and Kev Brown all recording 3-0 win’s with new boy Kev Brown hitting two 180 maximums in consecutive legs. Captain Jeff Billingham’s decision to rest himself and rotate his squad proving the strength in depth within the team.
The team now progress to meet Daventry WMC in a semi final to be played at Kingsley Park WMC on either the Friday 29/7/11, Sat 30/7/11 or Fri 5/8/11, once Daventry have chosen the date they wish to play. (Home team has to offer the away team 3 dates to play)

The semi final looks to be a much tougher affair with Daventry having beaten Kingsley Park last year and with Kingsley Park being eager to avenge that narrow defeat.

Richard Shanahan and Ramesh presented Mrs Donnelly and her son with a cheque for £900 raised in the 25’s tournament in memory of her husband Kevin. The proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support

News In Brief.
Delos Pyramid sent us a letter of thanks for the use of the concert room for their charity disco where they made £410 in aid of the Air Ambulance.

Cynthia Spencer Hospice thanked us for the £34.08 that our members put in their charity box.

NTFC gave us a cheque for £50 to club funds for the use of the lounge.

Kingsley School received their annual donation of £50 from our children in need fund.

Race Night.
On Saturday 27th August we are holding a night at the races in the Concert Room. If you would like to sponsor a race or name a horse please contact Carl White or Paddy Mullally.

LIFE MEMBERS' (OR IS IT MOANERS?) OUTING
It is the same every year. I come to my office on the Sunday morning after all the Life Members who have gone on a free outing to a place of their choice to be assailed by the same old complaints from the same life members. Life members, by the way, who have never voiced their complaints to the Secretary of the club but who choose to ambush Committee members who are there to enjoy the company of fellow members.

One old chestnut is " Why are we in the CIU? What has it done for us?"

I spoke at the Union's Annual General Meeting at Blackpool this year where I itemised some items that directly affected this club. The club journal report of the relevant section is quoted hereunder: -

"Had the CIU not challenged the Gambling Act as it was going through Parliament clubs would have lost their £250 jackpot machines. For his club, that would have meant losing at least £30,000. A year. Also. the Union fought to get the prize limit for bingo raised before having to be licensed to play. They had partial success in raising the limit from £1000 to £2000 a year, and that saved his club £1600 a year.
The CIU alerted clubs to the possibility of rate reductions.... due to losses directly attributable to the smoking ban. My clubs rates went down by about £1000 per year. Dransfields, with the wholehearted support of the CIU, has been the main mover in getting category B3A machines (The Volcano) listed as exempt from VAT. Based on his club's income from the machine, it was better off to the tune of about £6000 per year.."

The above list is not exhaustive, but we would be worse off to the tune of about £38,000 every year on those items alone if we were not in the CIU.

The other month I reported about the windfall of VAT that saw £34,000 land in our bank in March. This was a one off that we would not have had a chance of if we did not have the support of the CIU.

HMRC are trying to get that money back and I am sure the CIU will be pulling its weight to try to ensure that does not happen.

There are other ongoing matters where the CIU is using every endeavour to support all CIU clubs in these perilous and difficult times.

I hope the above gives a flavour of what good the CIU does for us, and for us I mean each and every one of us!

The other old chestnut is about bar prices.

We have always owned up to not being the cheapest Club but neither are we by any means the most expensive. To compare our prices with Weatherspoons and the like is ridiculous. How many free outings for Life Members do they give? How often do they arrange free Panto's for member's children? How many of them have free entertainment three nights a week? How many provide bingo where all tickets sales are paid out in prizes and the costs are borne by the pub?

Yes, we do charge more than these super chains but we also give much, much more value as a club working for its members.

Our prices are as low as we dare go whilst our members choose other venues to drink at. Variety is certainly the spice of life and it is good to go to other places for a change. It is a fact that if more of our members chose this club more often the pressure on bar prices could be relieved.

Oh for the Sunday I can come to the office after the Life Member's outing and be regaled with tales of how grateful everyone was for the day out!

Dragon Boat Race.

The South East Midlands Branch of the CIU is looking for volunteers to crew a Dragon Boat in a day of races to raise money for charity at Lilford Lodge Lakes, Barnwell on 4th September 2011.

The day starts at 9.00am and goes on until 6.00pm.

It is anticipated that there will be live music, a children’s funfair, displays including the Territorial Army, Hot food and snacks, a beer tent and various stalls and events.

Each boat will take part in a series of races with a winner's trophy being presented at the end of the day. Heineken Brewery is paying the £350.00 entrance fee.

All monies raised will go to support the local charities nominated by The Rotary Clubs of Nene Valley.

If you fancy your chances as a crewmember, please give your name to Barry Slasberg by the end of July. As this invitation will go across the Branch there may have to be a selection process if there are too many volunteers.

If you fancy a fun day out with your family, again let Barry know by the end of July and if there is a big enough demand the club will arrange transport and charge only the cost of the seat on the coach to get you there and back.

Bridge St Re-opens to Traffic.
Just a warning to our members that head for the town centre after an evening at the club, the council has decided to end the Bridge Street closure experiment. So from Friday 8th July traffic will return.

5-A-Side.
We entered two teams for the knockout tournament. A Team, Mark Day, Jack Grant, Richard Dunkley, Kev Marson and Christain. B Team, Richard Dunkley Snr, Shane Mathews, Jordan, Steve Abrams, Paul Collins and Roddy Cook.
The A Team reached the final where they lost 3-2. The A Team will now go on to represent us in the league that starts on Tuesday 5th July. We would like to thank Carlsberg for donating the strip for next season.

CIU Darts.
Well done the lads that played, the next round also at home will be played on Friday 8th.

Cabaret night.
You are invited to a first class Cabaret Night on October 22nd. There will be a buffet and the bar will be open till midnight.
The show will star the fabulous Birdman; a comedian and a top class duo will support him.

Concert Room Decorations.
Following the recent decorating of the concert room we ask all room hirers and partygoers to refrain from pinning, blue tacking or cellotaping etc banners and pictures and the like to the wall as damage is often caused in the removal.

Life Members Outing.

On Saturday 25th June our annual outing to Stratford-Upon-Avon will take place. The program this year is;
9.00 depart Kingsley. 10.30 arrive Embassy SC.
17.00 leave Embassy SC. 19.00 arrive Kingsley.
Tickets at £5.00 (refundable on day of trip) are available from John or from behind the bar from April 1st. Most of the seats have been taken; book yours now to avoid disappointment.

Clubs support the CIU.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Working Men's Club & Institute Union in Blackpool on 9th April, clubs showed massive support for the CIU to an extent not seen in decades.

There were two guest speakers. Firstly Simon Clark of Save our Pubs and Clubs spoke very persuasively on his belief that our clubs are an extension of our homes and should be free from Government interference. He did stress the need for support from clubs in challenging MP's and getting them to join the all-party parliamentary group for non-profit making clubs.

Then our own Northampton MP, Brian Binley spoke passionately of his involvement with and belief in our movement. Brian is a Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group and has been involved in our clubs since his childhood, his father also being a committed clubman.

The General Secretary Mick McGlasham gave a detailed report of the work of the CIU and the commitment of both himself and his staff to do everything in their power to support our clubs.

The Notices of motion discussed at the meeting were all based around raising funds for the movement to erase a deficit running at around £800k per year on our internal trading. It would not be overstating the point to say that the support shown by clubs was astounding. Out of four motions addressed only one delegate stood up to argue against just one of the motions.

The only motion that required a counting of the vote was the motion to put the Pass Card up to £3.50 including VAT from £2.55 plus VAT. With the different VAT treatment this is an increase to the CIU of only 36 pence. 439 voted in favour and 210 against. Well over the 2/3rds majority required.

The effect of this motion is that next year the subscriptions will increase by 50 pence, which is to reflect the Pass Card increase only.

The club will have to pay an extra £500 or £600 but this will be covered by the extra subscriptions that our women members have had to pay in compliance with the Equality Act.

It was sad to see only 640+ delegates at the meeting, much of which can be put down to club closures and the continuing hard times made so much harder by our Government.

The overwhelming support of the clubs that did attend will linger in the memories of all who attended for some time.

Bar Prices

You will all be aware that our beloved Chancellor has once again put the boot in to our clubs with his punitive increase in duty through the last budget.

We should be clear that this is not a party political statement as Chancellors of every political persuasion seem bent on killing the decent social life afforded through our clubs under the guise of fighting binge drinking. This excuse has put thousands of people out of work, stifled genuine Social activity outside the home and closed down literally thousands of decent meeting places throughout the country.

Your committee has put off the increase for one month, but must regretfully put 5 pence on every alcoholic drink with effect from 1st May.

Please let your local member of parliament know what you think of parliaments wanton destruction of the social fabric of your life.

If enough of you want to make your voice heard we could invite our local MP Michael Ellis to the club for a chat with you. Let the Secretary know if you are interested.

Good News and Bad

It has taken 5 years but, through the CIU who have supported all clubs in this matter, we have received a refund of VAT in the sum of £34681.34 including interest.

HMRC have fought hard but have been soundly beaten in two appeals and decided to pay up.

The sting in the tail is that they have said they are to fight on and if they win, in maybe another 5 years they will want repayment within 30 days or they will charge interest from the day they paid us. As a point of interest, I am told that most commentators do not think they have much of a chance of winning

So they have given us all this money and said we spend any of it at our peril.

This is typical of the big brother attitude they have. They smile and spend probably tens of thousands on TV ads. Behind the smiles lie threats and intimidation. This is the way they work.

Ten years ago they tried to get us to pay over £18000 they knew was not due. They played on our ignorance but did not count on the spirit of the Working Men's Club. Eighteen months of intimidation ended in an apology and a refund of our expenses. How many clubs pay over because
they are told they must, but are ignorant of the fact that the money is not due.

We are now faced with fines for almost any wrongdoing. Someone has to pay for the inefficiency and incompetence of HMRC. It should be their bosses and not us!

As a member of the National Executive, I will be fighting to put the "Service" back into civil service. Indeed a bit of the "civil" would not hurt either.

Children’s Outing.

Following from the last newsletter, the Secretary had a response from one member who would be willing to pay for his four grandchildren to go on an outing.

Because of this almost universal lack of response, we regret that there will be no children's outing again this year.

If the improving trend of 2010 continues into 2011 we do hope to be able to reintroduce the outing in 2012. A vital part of this recovery is the continued support and patronage of our members using their club as their venue of first choice when thinking of a night or lunch time out.

So, let us know what you would like to see happening in the club that would make a visit a pleasure for you.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. We still have a suggestion box in the main bar, or you can talk to any member of the Committee or the Secretary who will ensure every serious suggestion is considered.

Thank You Letter.

The club has received a letter of thanks for the £1,100 you raised in memory of John Collins in support of Macmillan Cancer for the Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital.

Obituaries.

It is with sadness that we have to announce the deaths of J D Wooliscroft, Charlie Wright, Derek Burditt and Kevin Donnelly. Our thoughts are with their families and friends.

Decorations.

As some of you may have noticed, we have had the ceilings painted. Over the next few weeks we will be wallpapering and painting the concert room and painting the long corridor.
We hope that the members appreciate our efforts and remember that it is their club and report any petty vandalism.

Welfare Payout.

The June 2011 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during June, commencing on Sunday 6th June 2011.

It is with regret that we will be saying thank you and farewell to Louise
and Paul Pink as employees from 9th May. They have both done sterling work on our behalf since Sarah went on maternity leave but have decided that the commitment is just that bit too much to stay until the end of July. We are pleased to say they will still be a part of the club as members and look forward to their company for the rest of their natural as the saying goes.

Welcome Martin.

It is with pleasure that we announce that Martin Moss is taking over as
temporary Steward with effect from 9th May until the end of Sarah's
maternity leave. Martin is standing down from the Committee to fulfil this vital function. Perhaps a little selfishly, we wish Martin every success in this role.

Annual General Meeting.

The AGM for the club was held in the concert room on Sunday 13th March 2011.

With the advent of the Equality Act our women members have now become full members with equal rights to men. The first task of the chairman, Graham Burgess, was to warmly welcome women members to the meeting for the first time in the club's history.

The meeting was presented with the annual accounts that showed a massive improvement on the last year with the loss reduced from £57,000 to £7,000. The reduction was due mainly to savings, finding extra sources of income and continuing to get increasing support from our main supplier Carlsberg. As promised, price increases at the bar were kept to a minimum and will continue so to be.

It is a shame to note that out of about 2000 members 41 including the Committee bothered to attend. That is just over 2% of the membership.

Children’s Outing.

Last year we could not afford a children's outing and we regret that we are still not in a position to subsidise such an outing this year. However, members approached us last year that said they were willing to pay for their children. We need to gauge if this idea would have any support and ask any family interested to let the Secretary know how many tickets they are prepared to pay for at £12 per seat for every person. Children up to four years old would go free. All adults and other children would be asked to pay the full fare.

Please contact the Secretary by 21st April so that we can make a decision on which you can be informed in the next newsletter.

Elections 2011.

There were only enough nominations this year to fill the vacancies available. They were: - President. Graham Burgess returned unopposed
Treasurer. Dave Birch CMD returned unopposed. Committee. Geoff Bassett, Pete Beaumont, John Carnegie-Brown, Carl White and Matt Wright. There will therefore be no elections this year. There will however be some casual vacancies to be filled by the new committee. Could we then see our first Woman Committee member?

Macmillan Donation.

On Sunday 20th March a cheque for £1100 in memory of John Collins was presented to the Macmillan Cancer Support who with Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust have joined forces to create a state of the art Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital, providing chemotherapy for people with cancers of the blood such as leukaemia and lymphoma. Graham Burgess presented the cheque to the Macmillan representative. Watched by members of John’s family, also in the picture are main fundraisers Richard Shanahan & Martin Moss and secretary Barry Slasberg.

St Georges Day.

On St Georges Day Saturday April 23rd we will be having a full day of celebrations. Opening at 11.00. From midday until 4 pm you can enjoy a full English breakfast of 2 sausages, 2 bacon, 1 egg, mushrooms, tomato, beans, black pudding and chips. - £3.50. Gammon ham, egg and chips. - £3.00 Faggots, mash, and mushy peas. - £3.50The entertainment will start at 2.00.-4.30 with Walk Right Back. Obituaries.

Sadly we have to report the deaths of Mrs Smith, Bob Marriot, John Croft and Alf Munns. Our thoughts are with their families and friends.
Geff Boswell. One of the founder members of the reformed Air-Gun team back in 1972, a long time member and general dogsbody of our outdoor bowls team and a long time member of the indoor bowls league at Kingsley Park will be sadly missed.

WELFARE PAYMENT.

Last month we were visited by the Cask Marque inspectors who awarded us a 100% for our beers.

St Patrick’s dance
Our annual St Patrick’s dance will be held on Saturday 12th March. Music will be by The Cassidy Show Band. There will also be a display of Irish dancing. Tickets for this event are on sale from committee members or from behind the bar. We will be raising funds for local children in need on the night.
Tickets are only £5.00 and the bar will be opened until midnight.

No Smoking in the Toilets.
It has been brought to the committee’s attention that some of our lady members have been smoking in the toilets. Not only is this breaking the clubs rules it is also a criminal offence. Any member male or female caught smoking in the toilets can expect to be severely dealt with.

Super Fun Night Out.
The Ladies Skittles B Team is looking for new recruits to play skittles in the Monday night league.

Experience is always welcome but by no means essential. What is essential is to come determined to have a fun night out. Winning is the icing on the cake, losing you still have the cake and it is not so fattening without icing on it. So you win whichever way it goes.

Come into the Club on a Monday night and introduce yourself to our captain, Jackie Gibson, and the rest will be plain sailing.

Subscription Renewal.

Acknowledgements.

We have received a letter of thanks from the Blind Association thanking us for the £450 that our members raised through the bottle on the bar.

We have also received thanks From the Poppy Appeal for the £131.84 raised through the sale of poppies.

We have also raised over £1000 for the Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital. A big thank you to the people that supported us on the night, to all the bingo players that threw their loose change into the buckets after the bingo sessions and everyone that contributed,

What Are the Benefits of CIU Membership?

1. The opportunity for its members to purchase Associate and Pass Cards, in order to be able to visit 2,200 affiliated clubs through Great Britain.
2. A monthly Journal giving news & views on other clubs and articles of club management and legal advice.

12. Up to date information and advice on matters of law affecting clubs.
13. Better relationships with police, local authorities, government bodies etc.
14. The rules department changes rules free of charge. Solicitors would charge several hundred pounds.
15. Arbitrations are organised by the CIU minimal cost. Outside professional fees would cosy £000’s.

If a club left the Union it would lose all these benefits and would face grave difficulties in its dealings with the Financial Services Authority.

The Annual General Meeting.

At the time of going to press the date of the 2011 Annual General Meeting is yet to be confirmed, but in all likelihood it will take place in the concert room on Sunday 27th February at 11.15 am.
This meeting will be historic in that it will be the first meeting of members that both men and women will be able to attend.
For those attending for the first time, briefly the format of the meeting is to confirm previous meeting minutes, adopt the financial accounts, appoint auditors for the coming year, set up elections for the following week and consider any notices of motion.
The only item needing further explanation is that of notices of motion. These are items put forward to the meeting by either the Committee or individual members concerning the running of the club. If a member wishes to put forward a notice, they must present that motion in writing to the General Secretary signed by themselves and seconded by another member. Both these members should attend the meeting and the proposer must stand up and put the arguments forward for the motion. The seconder may add to the argument or simply state s/he seconds the motion. Others may then contribute to the debate both for and against and
finally the proposer may answer any matters arising from the debate before voting by show of hands takes place.
Notices of motion should ideally start with such words as “I put forward the following notice of motion for consideration and, if thought fit, adoption by the annual general meeting to be held Sunday 27th February 2011”
If passed at the meeting by a simple majority this becomes a recommendation for the Committee to consider and either enact, or decline to enact, if it feels the motion passed is not in the best interests of the club.
Notices of motion cannot involve the changing of rules. There is a different procedure for these.
For consideration at the meeting any notice of motion must be presented to the General Secretary at least five days before the meeting so that it can be added to the displayed agenda for members to come prepared.
The Annual General Meeting is the one meeting where members can come and state their views, ask questions on any matter on the agenda criticise praise or thank the Committee on its endeavours over the past year and offer support for the coming year.
It is hoped that there will be a good attendance at the meeting so that your committee will be able to feel there is real support from the membership in guiding the club through the difficult times ahead.

Committee Elections

In early February, a nomination sheet will be posted in the main bar
and will remain in place until noon 28th February inviting nominations for positions on the management committee. Any person standing must have been a full financial member of the club for at least six months and must be proposed and seconded by two full financial members of at least six months standing also.
This means that this upcoming election is the last annual election where only men can be elected.
Although women cannot stand this time they are entitled to vote in the election.
Women may join the committee from 1st July 2011 and will therefore be eligible for co-option from that date should there be any casual vacancy arising.
Anyone interested in helping run the club on behalf of its two thousand members who want to know what is involved should pop in and see the General Secretary or speak to any member of the Committee.
The job is not easy, but as part of a good team it could be both fun and extremely rewarding when your efforts contribute towards filling the club with happy members and associates.

St Patrick’s Dance.

Our annual St Patrick’s dance will be held on Saturday 12th March. Music will be by The Cassidy Show Band. There will also be a display of Irish dancing. Tickets for this event are on sale from committee members or from behind the bar. We will be raising funds for local children in need on the night.
Tickets are only £5.00 and the bar will be opened until midnight.

Happy New Year.

The Committee would like to wish all our members and friends A Happy and prosperous New Year. We thank you for your support and hope to see you all in the club soon.

Looking Ahead

The year 2011 looks as though it is going to be tough for everyone. Use your club and take a break from the strain. Most nights of the week there is something to come and enjoy. Use the time to relax and meet your friends and make new ones. We do not count our success by the number of pints you drink but the number of bums on seats and smiles we see. There is no embarrassment in just coming in for one pint and having a good few hours in the club. Enjoy the entertainment, enjoy the games and enjoy the company. Our charges for snooker have not changed for years and at £2.00 per hour represents phenomenal value. Pool at 50 pence a game also takes some beating
Why not get your friends to join? For just £15.00 you and they could all have a regular night out at the club (just like in the old days!)

With belt tightening all around you may feel that celebrating a special function is beyond your means with things as they are. For all special celebrations booked for 2011, the hire of the function room is being reduced from £150.00 to £75.00 for all bookings received by 31st March 2011. Other booking fees will be reduced by half also. This reduction will apply to all bookings already received for 2011. So think ahead and get your bookings in! We cannot reduce the cost of our catering as it is already second to none for both price and quality and we are not prepared to compromise on quality that would be the only means of reducing the price.

Please do not forget to always top up your phone at the club. It costs you nothing beyond the top up fee and generates a small commission to the club that helps us control our bar tariff.

The world is full of gloom and doom, but our world at Kingsley Park Working Men's Club could be a very real bubble of relief, happiness and optimism that comes from sharing both good and bad times with good friends and neighbours in good surroundings.
Think about it. You know it makes sense!.

Wi-Fi.The code to get into the system is "jlerwfan" all in lower case. Register once and it should do for good.

Subscriptions 2011
Membership subscriptions for 2011 have been affected by the Equality Act that forbids differentiating the treatment of people on the grounds of age or sex.
The subscription for all members for 2011 will therefore be that agreed at the last Annual General Meeting of £8.00 per member, be they male, female or over 65. Life members will only have to pay £3.00 for their pass card.
For one year only women members will have to pay an extra £3.00 to buy the Associate card that gives membership of all Working Men's clubs subject to the same restrictions men suffer.
Partners of members who have not themselves been members are not affected by this legislation and can still enter the club unhindered on the arm of their member partner; but they cannot come to the club on their own or buy alcoholic beverages from the bar.

Mark Knight Race Night.
A total raised £820. Which was divided too: Cynthia Spencer £300 which was doubled to £600 by Carlsberg. £130 to Northants & Warwick’s Air Ambulance, £130 to British Heart Foundation, £140 to S.P.A. Football Club which Mark was involved with and we know that is what he would have wanted & £120 Remembrance Vase that his friends want to put on his grave. Club President Graham Burgess presented a cheque for £140 Jamie Clarke, manager of the S.P.A. Football team.

Special Meeting.

A special meeting for members was held in the club on 21st November where several notices of motion were considered. Twenty four members including 14 members of the Committee were present. This meeting was convened by the Committee to align the club with the Equality Act that is now law and to preserve the security of our members by registering the club under the Industrial and Provident Society Acts.

The first motion was that the club should adopt the interpretation rule giving all women members equal right to men. This was adopted unanimously.

The second motion was that there shall be one class of member only, that of full member holding both the Union Associate Card and Pass Card. This was adopted unanimously.

The third motion was that the date women joined the club with restricted rights shall count towards their years of continuous membership in calculating life membership awards. There were 23 in favour and one against. The motion was adopted.

The fourth motion was that for 2011 there shall be one rate of subscription being £8.00 as agreed at the last AGM for full members. (Women will have to pay an addition £3.00 to purchase an Associate card for one year only) This was adopted unanimously.

The fifth motion was to change to registration under the Industrial and Provident Society Acts. There were 9 in favour and 14 against. The motion failed

The sixth motion was to adopt the model temporary affiliates rule subject to deletion of one paragraph. This was adopted unanimously.

Secretary's comment

We are proud to be a democratically run club. Democracy only has a real value when everyone who has a vote uses it. When 24 out of 1800 members bother to attend such an important meeting, it makes one's heart sink.

Women will become full members on paying their subscriptions in 2011. They will be welcome at the next Annual General Meeting and become eligible to stand for the Committee with effect from 1st July 2011.

This is a historic time in the social development of the club. The next few years will see if my continuous campaigning for the equality of women will prove to have been a wise course of action for Kingsley Park Working Men's Club. I have absolutely no doubt it will have been.

Why Not Have A Laugh?

Your Committee takes very seriously the comfort and enjoyment of all our members and guests of all the clubs facilities. Heaters were provided at considerable cost for smokers' comfort through the bad weather. Those people who abuse the heating by sabotaging the timer and deliberately breaking the heaters, thus depriving members of a bit of comfort seem to be just having a laugh. Those people who take pleasure in vandalising seating in the bar and the snooker room seem to be just having a laugh.

You mindless morons who are causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage are simply putting pressure on the price of your drinks. For heaven’s sake get your brain cell in working order and have a bit of a laugh at jokes instead of at all the people who want to enjoy the company and facilities of the club that you are recklessly spoiling.

Welfare Payout.

The December 2010 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during September, commencing on Sunday 5th December 2010.
The next Welfare Payments will be made in March 2011.

The Vat Man Cometh.

Everyone must be aware that the rate of VAT is to be increased from 17.5% to 20.0% with effect from 4th January 2011.

It is with regret that this increase has to be reflected in bar prices from that date and therefore the price of all VATable items will be increased by 5 pence. Because of rounding, some half pints that were increased last time round will escape any increase this time. Equally, some that escaped last time will see a 5 pence increase this time.
There have been some horrific forecasts of what will happen to prices next year. With all that is going on in the country today there can be no certainty of what 2011 may bring but please be assured that your Committee is in active negotiations with our suppliers to ensure that the best deals possible are put in place to keep prices as low as humanly possible.

Letter Of Thanks.

Charlotte Faulkner & Julie Byrne would like to thank the members that supported their Motown disco evening on November 6th where they raised £1507 in the memory of Evon White, for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Charity Event.

There are a limited number of tickets still available for our charity night on December 4th to raise money for the Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital. Tickets cost £2 and are available from behind the bar.

Rugby Tickets.

We were given tickets by Carlsberg for the England v Australia game at Twickenham. The committee decided to sell the tickets to raise money for the Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital. We are pleased to announce that we raised £160 for this good cause.

Mini Tote & Treasure Chest.

There will be no Mini Tote or Treasure Chest in the week leading up to Christmas. Tickets will be back on sale on Boxing Day for the next draw.

Redtooth Poker.

The latest seasons winner was Lea Winter Jnr. Accepting the trophy on his behalf from Richard Shanahan are Luke Baker and Martin Lynch.
Lea Luke and Martin go forward to represent Kingsley in he regional finals.

Men’s Skittles. We have to congratulate the team after a great effort saw them win against St James WMC for the second time in a season. I have been informed that this is the first time that this is has ever happened.

Letter of Thanks.We have received a letter from Opus Energy. Thanking us for the use of the concert room for their event to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. They tell us that they have raised £2,000. Well done to all our members that supported them.

Obituaries.

John Collins sadly passed away on 9th October after a long and painful illness.
John had been a member of this club for twenty years and on the Committee for the last four years giving invaluable service on the Finance Committee.
He was a businessman in his own right and gave unstintingly of his time and expertise in support of the club.
Though he would never brag about anything, John refused to take the beer tickets or the quarterly honorarium granted by the membership.
If he couldn't say anything positive he would not say anything at all. He had and earned the respect of every member of the Committee and all those members he came in contact with.
He was ever ready with a smile and a wicked quip, even in the late stages of his illness. Many a lesser man would have given up well before John who performed his Committee duties until he was physically unable to do them and you never heard a complaint about the pain and discomfort he was constantly suffering.
We sadly say goodbye to a giant of a character; a consummate friend of the Club and an exceptionally nice man. He will be sorely missed by us all.
It was John's wish that the club raise funds for the new Haematology Unit at the General Hospital that is run by Macmillan nurses. We have already had two functions in aid of this and there are more to come. His aim was to raise at least £1000 for this project that meant so much to him. On his behalf you are invited to attend these functions or just drop the odd fiver in the bucket in the club.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Doreen and family.

Ken Ashby. Our thoughts are with his wife Rita, his children and grandchildren.

Special Charity Event.

Macmillan Cancer Support and Northampton General hospital NHS Trust have joined forces to create a state of the art Macmillan Haematology Suite at Northampton General Hospital, providing chemotherapy for people with cancers of the blood such as leukaemia and lymphoma.
You may have noticed the green buckets on the bar and in the concert room after bingo sessions.

On Thursday 30th September during the gig by The 5 Tornadoes we raised £295. Our aim is to raise over £1000.
To help us reach our target we are holding an evening of top entertainment on Saturday 4th December in the concert room. Starring comedian Paul Le Vent supported by Boy/Girl Duo D V 8.

Tickets will be on sale shortly priced £2.00.

On Thursday 7th October the Northampton Working Men’s Club Ladies Darts League held their annual Charity Pairs Knockout at Kingsley.
Kingsley provided both finalist in a thrilling game Katrina Birch & Lesley Page emerged as winners defeating Kathy Maclean & Heather Williams. Congratulations to both pairs.

Congratulations to Glyn Williams of the Air-Gun section for winning the town league indivisuals.

Congratulations also go to Kingsley A Crib team who were runners-up in the club knockout.

We would like to welcome two new teams to our exciting games section. On Mondays we have a new Pool Team and on Tuesdays we have a new Table Tennis team. Members are invited to give them support.

We would like to welcome Louise Pink as the assistant to Sarah into the Kingsley Team.
Louise has huge experience in pubs and bars in this country and abroad.
We hope you have a long and enjoyable stay at Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club.

Half Year Results.

We are pleased to be able to announce some good news for the first time in some years. Our management accounts to 30th June 2010 show a deficit of only £3700. This is an improvement on last year of over £30,000 for the same period. There is still some way to go before we can once again feel secure, but this can only be described as an exceptional turn around in the situation this country is suffering from.
Thanks must go to the many members and associates who remain loyal to the club through thick and thin, and the staff who have accepted change and also remained loyal through these trying times.

Our Member of Parliament Visits.

At the invitation of the General Secretary Michael Ellis, our newly appointed Member of Parliament, visited the Club on 17th September.
He spent an hour with the Secretary where many of our problems, mainly brought on by bad legislation, were acknowledged with Michael responding very favourably to our representations.
He then went into the bar and had a few minutes listening to, and responding to, the views of some of our members.
His parting shot was that he acknowledged the value of our Working Men’s Clubs to our communities and is willing to support our clubs both through Westminster and personal support in our clubs if we can give him enough notice.
As with all MP’s, he has hundreds of areas of concern across the whole of his constituency. The only way to keep high on the list of his priorities is to keep in touch with him. This will be done by your club’s management, but it gives more strength to our case if backed up by members getting in touch with him.
We will be emailing copies of our newsletter to Michael every month. If you have a concern you would like him to address and you are happy to have that concern published, just drop a line to The Secretary. If he thinks your letter is not appropriate and should be addressed privately or it is in need of editing he will contact you and keep you informed of action he is taking. His decision will be final.

Games news.

Congratulations to our snooker A team players that won both the Town League and the Town Cup.

Congratulations also to ladies darts players Amanda Cramphorn, Debbie Burton and Barbara Warwick who finished runners-up in the Fosters Dart League 3-A-Side knockout.

Snooker players are requested to cover the tables and switch off lights when they have finished their game.

The Smoking Ban.

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club hosted a public meeting arranged by the organisation “Freedom to Choose” on 20th September.
Phil Johnson, chairman of that organisation chaired the meeting. Guests invited were Philip Hollobone, MP for Kettering; Chris Heaton-Harris, MP for Daventry and Barry Slasberg as President of the South East Midlands Branch of the CIU.
We were also pleased to welcome Sean Spillane representing Amend the Smoking Ban.com
Contrary to the newspaper headlines, the aim was not to reverse the ban but to relax it so that clubs that have space can have properly regulated smoking rooms for members to be able to enjoy a smoke in comfort without spoiling the enjoyment of the cleaner air that is being enjoyed by all since the smoking ban came in three years ago.
There was not a large attendance, but the two MPs were very positive and helpful with their comments.
It would be unwise to hold your breath in anticipation of any change in the near future. The ongoing problems caused by the ban are now being acknowledged with several European countries relaxing the ban to save clubs, pubs, livelihoods and community life.

Secretary’s Hours.

The Secretary has again agreed to a small cut in hours and a change of hours to more effectively support the club.
With immediate effect for a trial period his office hours will be
Sunday 9am to 2pm
Monday 9am to 2pm and 6pm to 10pm
Tuesday 5pm to 8pm
Wednesday 5pm to 8pm
Thursday 9am to 2pm and 6pm to 10pm

It should be noted that these are office hours. Those hours on the phone at home are additional and can be substantial.

Occasionally these hours will alter to fit in with his Branch and National Executive duties.

Members Christmas Draw 2010.
Tickets for this years raffle are now on sale priced at £1:00 for a book of five. You can purchase tickets at the welfare table, from the doorman or from behind the bar.
Draw takes place Tuesday 7th December at 8pm. Prizes to be claimed by Friday 24th December.

Obituaries.

Lil Burton. At 97 we believe Lil was our oldest member. Although Lil was living in Worthing for the last few years she kept up her membership. She was a regular bingo player and our condolences go to her son Derek and to her family and friends.

Robert Fall. Saints fan Rob used the club several times every week; he was always ready with a joke to cheer us up. He was very helpful to the friends who gathered around him in the club. A regular participant in our raffles and good causes. Condolences to his family and friends.

This years pantomime Cinderella takes place in the concert room on Saturday 18th December 2010 from 2pm to 4:15pm.

Future Tornadoes gigs are sold out. So don’t miss your chance to see them perform live.

Free Service For Members.

It’s been reported this month there’s £42,900,000 of coins stuck down the back of the sofa. So I want to set all our members a challenge, to snoop in the nooks and crannies and see what you can find. Places to check, back of sofas, back of car seats, pockets of old clothes, bottom of the washing basket, back of 'man' drawer, bottom of wardrobe, and lint trap of tumble dryer. Maybe you have been saving your coins in a jar or tin.
As a service to our members we will change all your silver and pound coins into notes absolutely FREE. Unfortunately we cannot except copper coins.
Of course there are alternative ways to change your coins, you can take them to Morrisons where they will charge you 8% for providing them with change.

The National Memorial Arboretum.

The Royal British Legion is holding a trip to The National Memorial Arboretum on Sunday 19th September. The cost of the trip is £15.
Anyone interested should contact Clint Marler.

Welfare Payout.

The September 2010 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during September, commencing on Sunday 5th September 2010.

The next Welfare Payments will be made in December 2010.

Concert Room Bar.

At busy times members have been having difficulties gaining entry into the concert room due to the queues at the bar and the bingo table.
To ease the situation it has been decided that from Friday 3rd September to make the queue for the bar one-way only.
We ask you to queue from the stage side and to move away from the bar once you have been served. Notices will be in place and the staff will be told not to serve people joining from the wrong direction.

Christmas Raffle.

Now that summer is over it is time to get ready for Christmas. Our Christmas draw tickets go on sale from mid September. Once again there will be cash prizes. 1st £500. 2nd £250 & 3rd £100. Plus numerous of other prizes.
Tickets will be on sale at the Welfare Table, from committee members, from the doorman and from behind the bar. Draw Tuesday December 7th at 8pm. All prizes must be claimed by Friday 24th December.

Bob Langton.

Congratulations to our longest serving member Bob Langton Who completed 70 years of membership On August 1st Club President Graham Burgess congratulates Bob on his achievement.

Mark Knight Memorial.

On Saturday 14th August a football match was held in memory of Mark Knight. Well done to everyone that took part. In the evening there was a disco and a raffle where £420 was raised for charity. Three charities. Cynthia Spencer, Air Ambulance and The British Heart Foundation. Have each received £140.

Luke, Martin and Lonnie go forward to represent Kingsley in the area final.

Treasure Chest.

The Treasure Chest on 15th August was not claimed so according with the rules £25 was donated to the Help For Heroes charity fund. Treasure Chest tickets are on sale from the welfare table when John is in the club and from behind the bar at all other times.

The collection tins have been empted and along with donations from members a cheque for £365 has also been sent.

Cask Marque.

Representatives from Cask Marque recently made one of their unannounced visits to the club. Once again all our beers passed their tests. Congratulations to Sarah and Nathan for keeping our beer in excellent condition.

Book Swap.

Our book swap is proving to be a hit amongst our members, so successful that we will shortly be adding more shelves.
We ask members to donate any books that they have finished with to our library to ensure its continued success.

What do you want?

Our local MP Brian Binley has been making quite a splash in the local press and on TV trying to get a smoking room approved for all pubs and clubs who want them for their clientele or members.
When the ban was introduced we all agreed that it made for a much more pleasant place to be, but there was sympathy for smokers who were literally kicked out of the club by the Government and there seemed to be broad approval to ask for a smoking room as they had in pubs and clubs the last time there was an anti smoking campaign about a hundred years ago.
Leave aside whether or not Brian Binley's efforts will bear fruit, please let the committee know whether or not you think we should join with Mr Binley in his campaign.
We have been asked to host a meeting of the "Freedom to choose" movement in September that may bring influential folk from far and wide to consider this problem.
Your Committee is pledged to fight for its member’s rights, but needs to know if you want to be fought for on this matter.
Email; write or put a note in the suggestion box. If you just mention it in conversation it may be forgotten so it needs to be in writing.
The question is not whether or not we will succeed, but whether or not we should fight.
Just as a point of fact, we had a credit of about £2000 from Northampton Borough Council as a refund of our rates because of the proven damage to our club turnover as a direct result of the smoking ban.

Committee Vacancies.

Due to illness and resignations the Committee has not been at full strength for some time.
There are two vacancies and volunteers are invited for those posts. The holders of those posts will also take a full part; as a member of the management committee; in the management of the club.
To qualify, the applicants must be full financial members of at least six month’s standing.

Dear Newsletter Readers.

After last nights QUIZ (28th July) I felt that I had to write this letter.
Firstly I would like to thank all the regular quiz players that turn out in all weathers, but after last night I felt that some of them deserved a special mention.
The special ones were the team US 4 plus 1 whose members were Clint, Tom, Mick, Brian and John who won the rolled over ACES HIGH JACKPOT of £112 and donated half of it to the HELP FOR HERO’S charity. They have also donated other winnings on many other occasions when they have won the quiz.
Also a mention for Ken, Matt, Alan And Joy (Joys Jugs) who also donated £20 to charity a couple of weeks ago.
So a BIG thank you to them all for there generosity.

Mark Knight Memorial Match.

On Saturday 14th August a football match will be held in memory of Mark Knight. Anyone who knew Mark will know that football was his first love and there couldn't be a more perfect way to celebrate his life, a fitting tribute to a man who devoted so much of his time to the beautiful game.

Everyone is invited to join the fun-filled family day at Blisworth. The main event will be a football match – Kingsley v Blisworth FC. Kick-off 2pm. Throughout the game and afternoon BBQ food will be available and there will be a bouncy castle for the children's entertainment. In the evening there will be a disco and a raffle with proceeds going to charity.

Please join us in celebrating Mark's life and his love of football. We can't think of a better way to pay tribute to him and his passion than by gathering his family and his friends for fun, food and footy!!!

Room Hire.
Room hire brings in much needed revenue to the club. If you have a Birthday, Wedding, Engagement or Anniversary planned get your booking in now. (Please note we do not accept bookings for eighteenth birthdays). The cost to hire the Concert Room is £150 so if you have something to arrange, get in touch with Barry now.

The Concert Room is also available Sunday afternoons for Christenings plus the Concert Room along with several smaller rooms are available mid-week for all sorts of events and meetings. If you have a group that is looking for a new venue, we have rooms available.

Delos Pyramid.

On Saturday 19th June The Charity in aid of Cynthia Spencer Hospice raised £298 on the night, and Delos have added another £102, donating £400 in total.
They would like to thank the club and members for their generosity and to thank us for great time that everyone had.

The committee would like to welcome Alan Payet to our front of house team. Alan has several years experience and has gained qualifications in the licence trade. We are sure Alan will be a worthy assistant to Sarah and an inspiration to all the staff. He looks forward to the challenges ahead.

Phew!!!

I cannot remember a budget in recent times when a chancellor of the exchequer has not targeted Drinking, Smoking and Driving.
Thank goodness the importance of a social existence has been given its rightful priority in this budget. It is true that the increase in VAT will affect all prices, but this does not come into force until 4th January 2011.
There is no increase in duty in this budget and the threat of a huge increase in cider duty has been removed.
There is no doubt that every one of us will be affected in the long term by what is happening in the country at large, but it is pleasing to note that your club is being given a breather for the time being that should enable prices to be stabilised for the rest of the year at least.

If you see or hear people vandalising the club, please inform a committeeman, the steward or assistant steward straight away.
We have had two toilets vandalised in the last week or so with pipes being ripped from the walls.
This mindless action by thugs who seem bereft of brain cells serves no purpose other than to increase the cost of a drink.
These people do not deserve your loyalty. They may not even be members. We can do without them, but we have to catch them first. So, if you catch them please dob 'em in.

The Natalie Hill Hope For Life Fund.

Dear Members.

Update Your Address.

On several occasions recently the committee has tried to write to members only to have the letter returned and be told that they have not lived here there for years. If you refer to your rulebook you will see that it is part of the rules that you must update your address when you move house.

Notifying Change of Address,
4. The committee shall keep upon the club premises a register of the names and addresses of the members. Every member shall, within 14 days, give notice to the secretary of any change in his address. The names of those who cease to be members shall be removed from the register.
If this applies to you please update your address immediately.

Club By-law.

One of the club by-laws states that no muddy boots or overalls are to be worn in the club. We all know that it is nice to drop into the club on the way home from a hard days work to have a couple of relaxing drinks.
We have nothing against that, but what we do ask you to do on weekdays is to go home by 7.00pm and get changed and not to come to the club in dirty clothes at the weekend.

Nutters.

As some of you may know a group of members known as the nutters have been raising money for a fun day out. They have successfully reached their target and thank all that contributed. They have also donated £100 to Help For Heroes, We hope they have a great day out on October 17th.

Join In Our Blind Tasting.

From Monday 28th June while stocks last we are offering a blind tasting of two vodkas to see if there is a need for change of our house vodka.
If you want to take part simply tell the staff.
You will be given a single Smirnoff for which you will pay and you will be given a single of the new brand free of charge.
Both will be poured out of your sight.
All you have to do is tell the staff which one you prefer and if the majority is big enough for change, the house vodka will be changed. If there is a vote for change, this could result in a small price reduction.
Please note that only one test per person in any one session is permitted.

Our Entertainment Secretary Paddy Mullally is presently in Northampton General Hospital where he is in a very poorly condition.

A new 60 inch television has been installed in time for World Cup. We invite you to support your favourite team here.
When England is playing the entertainment will not start until after the final whistle to ensure you don’t miss any of the action. We now have three televisions in the bar, so no matter where you sit you should be able to see at least one of them.

Welfare Payout.

The June 2010 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during June, commencing on Sunday 6th June 2010.
The next Welfare Payments will be made in September 2010.

Charity Donations.

The club has donated £100 to the Kingsley Mums and Tots group to help pay for their trip to West Midlands Safari Park.
£100 has also been donated to the Headlands School.

Letter of Thanks.

A letter thanking us for the free hire of the concert room and the support & generosity of our members on the night has been received from the family of Lizzie Little. They tell us that they had a fabulous night. I’m sure all our members that attended will agree. The latest news is that the total raised is over £6,200 with money still coming in.

There still some tickets available for the Natalie Hill charity night starring Northampton’s best ever group Accrington Stanley on June 5th. Tickets £5 each can be bought from the bar.
Also Delos Pyramid are hosting a Summer Disco at the Club on June 19th in support of the Cynthia Spencer Hospice Tickets £3 on the door.

Life Members and Pensioners’ Annual Day Out.

This years outing will take place on Saturday 26th June 2010.

As in previous years, a £5.00 deposit will be required which will be refundable on the day. The tickets may be obtained from John Carnegie-Brown or Pete Beaumont on the Welfare Table at the following times:

Olde English Cider.

It is with regret that due to lack of sales Thwaites Bitter will no longer be on offer. In time for the summer we will be offering our members a traditional English beverage in its place.
A recent review of Olde English Cider describes it as the most pleasant cider on the market; it is liquid gold as it leaves your taste buds alive and wanting more of the same, it is refreshing, bitter sweet and subtle. Olde English out tastes any other cider both foreign and indigienous.

Terry worked at the main sorting office for royal mail, age 55 to 60, he used to live on Standens Barn estate, his wife was called June, had 2 sons, oh he used to have a ford granada car. Jacquie.

Mark Knight Memorial Trophy.

The poker players have purchased a trophy in memory of Mark Knight, which will be awarded to the player topping the league each season.

CIU Annual General Meeting.

The Annual General Meeting of the CIU was held at the Opera House in the Winter Gardens Complex in Blackpool on Saturday 10th April 2010.
The meeting was charged with anticipation as it was chaired by our new National President, George Dawson with the backing of our new General Secretary Mick McGlasham, and contained two notices of motion put forward by the National Executive both of which were believed crucial to the future security and prosperity of the Union.

George Dawson's presidential address was charged with emotion decrying lack of support from the Breweries; all of whom he stated are now owned by Continental companies that are only interested in selling product, and have no interest in supporting outlets like our clubs. He warned how much we are alone in the world but that pulling together we have the ability to come through the recession into a prosperous future.

The auditor for the CIU presented the accounts for the year to 30th September 09. He warned that things could not go on as they are. The loss for the year was over £1 million and that is clearly not sustainable. He commended the upcoming motion to merge the associate and pass cards into one annual associate card costing only £2 of which 20 pence would be passed on to the club selling the card, and to make the purchase compulsory by every full member of every club.

The accounts and the annual report were accepted without debate.

Then came the motion to reduce the National Executive from 27 to 16 members. The motion was moved on behalf of the National Executive by Barry Slasberg and seconded by the Union Vice President John Tobin. No one came forward to either oppose or support the motion. The vote was a huge majority in favour of the motion. The reduction will come into effect at the next annual election in 2011.

The final motion was about the pass card and associate card as stated above. The motion was moved on behalf of the National Executive by the Union Accountant Steve Connell who offered a clear and reasoned argument for the proposal. He gave an clear statement of the consequences should our club members not be willing to pay £2 a year to support the movement. This was seconded by the chairman of the finance committee. It was followed by a healthy debate that went straight into a vote that did not look to provide the two thirds majority required to change the rules. No actual count was taken and the chairman declared the motion lost.

Finally the General Secretary gave a review of many items currently concerning the CIU.

A full verbatim report of the meeting will be published in the next edition of the Journal.

The results of both of the motions will each have far reaching implications for the future of CIU. There are certainly some very interesting and challenging times ahead. We will attempt to keep you fully informed of developments as they arise.

Equality Act Receives Royal Assent.

The Equality Act 2010 received Royal Assent from Parliament on 8th April 2010. The Act was pushed through Parliament before it dissolved for the General Election. The main provisions of the Act will not come into force automatically. They will need to be brought in by Ministerial Order. It was anticipated that the Act would come into force in October 2010, but this may now change.

The Act consolidates the numerous pieces of existing discrimination legislation into one Act. It introduces new laws banning discrimination in private clubs in respect of members, potential members, associates, guests and potential guests and generally strengthens anti-discriminatory legislation. The Act protects against discrimination (subject to certain exemptions) in respect of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnerships, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or beliefs, sex and sexual orientation.

An issue covered by the Act, which is pertinent to clubs, is the banning of discrimination in private clubs. For example, sex discrimination will be unlawful (except in relation to single-sex clubs) and so will age discrimination against people aged 18 and over where goods are brought and services provided (subject to certain exceptions).

The Government in the process of producing draft codes of practice with relation to the Act. It is safe to say that once the law comes into force there will be no discrimination between the rights and obligations of men and women members in our club, but as stated earlier, the time for implementation is yet to be decided.

We will keep you informed as matters progress.

Room Hire.

We still have a few vacant Saturdays in 2010. If you are planning an event this year don’t leave it to late.
The cost to hire the concert room is only £150. You can also hire it on Sunday afternoons for Christenings at a reduced rate. We also have several smaller rooms available mid week. If you would like details contact the secretary on 01604 719800.

Sport For All.

On Saturday evening 10th April the club was like a football or rugby match, the noise from the regular drunks shouting at the top of their voices made a lot of regular customers leave. This club has a lot of older customers who do not appreciate the noise from these hooligans. They should have been asked to leave and not be served with more drink i.e. spirits.

E.C. response

It is only natural for sport to bring out the passion in its supporters. No one would deny a hearty cheer, an urging to do better or a groan at some stupid mistake.

Noise to be so loud and menacing that people feel uncomfortable and threatened in their own club should not happen.

By all means show passion, but please temper this with consideration for other members who do not share the passion but do want to share the club's facilities in peace with their own company and supporters of sport.

Delos Pyramid Supports Cynthia Spencer At Kingsley.

Delos Pyramid is registered with the Care Quality Commission and helps adults with learning disabilities to live independently.
They are hosting a Summer Disco at the Club on 19th June in support of the Cynthia Spencer Hospice to which members of our club; their guests and associates are welcome.
With tickets at only £3 on the door, this should be a good night supporting two good causes.

Chancellor hits us again.

In the recent budget the chancellor decided to raise the duty on a pint of beer by 2% above the rate of inflation. February’s inflation rate was 3% so that means that we will have to increase the price of duty by 5%.
He has hit the cider drinkers the hardest by increasing the duty on cider and alco- pops by 10% above inflation. We will not know the full extent of the increases until our next delivery The committee will then have no choice but to pass on the increases to our members.

On Good Friday and Easter Monday the club will be opened from 11.00.

Games News.

Cribbage Success.
Congratulations to Alan Coles and Ramesh Chudasama for finishing runners-up in the CIU National Cribbage Pair’s Knockout.
Our A team also won the league this year. If you are interested in playing cribbage for the club on Monday nights, please contact the team captains.

Snooker Success.
We are delighted to note that there is an increase in the use of our tables of over 30% compared to last year. It makes the table maintenance cost of almost £1000 a year worthwhile to see member’s enjoying this facility.
What a shame to see the benefit of the extra use being more than wiped out by vandals breaking cues; smashing the token box; stealing balls and even pinching the spots from the tables.
The cost so far this year is in excess of £350.
Could the people involved please activate their one brain cell (possibly between them!) and think about what they are doing to their own friends and workmates by perpetrating (Doing) these pathetic acts of vandalism?

Following a request from our games teams it has been decided to provide cans of beer and lager for sale in the games room bar.
It has also been decided to move the lotto machine to the outside of the bar so that our members can purchase tickets when the bar is closed.

More men seem to drink cask ale than women because… women are conditioned from an early age that beer is a man’s drink. Beer is predominantly marketed to men (can you think of a female friendly beer advert?). Women also have the common misconception that beer is fattening, therefore avoid it – but it’s the least calorific alcoholic drink they can order across the bar.

A good cask ale is determined by… Temperature (too cold and all the flavour disappears, too warm and it tastes rank); Clarity (if a cask ale is cloudy it can be indicative that the beer is not fully conditioned); Aroma (must be fresh, appetising – vinegary, yeasty, chemically etc); Taste (all good cask ales have a natural CO2 content giving a slight tingle on the tongue. Good flavours include floral, grassy, citrus, peach, pineapple, banana, toffee, horlicks, biscuit, or coffee. Depending on the beer!

Due to lack of sales, it has been decided that Thwaits will replace Kingsley Smooth as our budget beer.

Welfare News.

The March 2010 Welfare Payment will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00pm and 9.00pm and Sundays between 11.00am and 1.00pm during March, commencing on Sunday 7th March 2009.

For existing members of the KPWMC Welfare Fund subscriptions shall be £4.00 per annum payable in March. Those members who currently do not pay an annual subscription will have £3.00 deducted from their March payment.

The nomination sheet was posted in the main bar on 14th February
and will remain in place until noon 1st March.
Those nominated should supply the Secretary with a photograph, so
voters can see for whom they are voting.
Voting will be on.
Friday 5th 8.00 to 10.00pm,
Saturday 6th 11.30am to 1.00pm. & 8.00 to 10.00pm,
Sunday 7th 11.30am to 1.00pm.
It is permitted to canvass for votes, but not in the vicinity of the polling booth.

Book Swap.

Our book swap is working well now with many members taking books to read and clearing their shelves at home and bringing them down to the club.We’ve fitted additional shelves to satisfy the demand from our members. You will find it located in the downstairs poolroom on your left as you enter the Club. If you have any books that you have read and are just gathering dust, why not add them to our book collection and swap them for some that are already on the shelves.

Games News.

The date for the CIU crib pairs semi-final and final has now been decided. It will take place at Wellingborourgh Railway Club on Saturday March 6th at 2pm. We ask the members that are going along to support our players, Alan Coles and Ramesh Chudasama to be there early and not to forget to take their club cards with them. We wish Ramesh and Alan good luck and I hope to include a picture of them with the trophy in next month’s newsletter.
Congratulations to Kath Maclean for being part of the winning team in the N.W.M.C. Ladies Darts League Pairs Knockout.

Charity Donation.

We have received a letter from the Cynthia Spencer charity thanking us for the £131-81. For the loose change that you put in their collection box.

Kids Outing.

Regretfully the committee has decided that we are unable to fund the children’s outing this year. For years we have been bearing this loss but due to financial restraints we have decided that it would be unfair to ask our members to continue with the cost.

Games Room Bar.

The bar in the games room has not been used regularly enough. This means we are unable to maintain the high standard of draught beers and lagers that our members deserve. It has been decided that the bar will only open when the games teams have a match on. Further to this the bar will only sell bottled drinks.

Obituary.
Sadly we have to announce the death of Cyril Wade. Ex Royal Marines Cyril 89 was a life member and a great supporter of the club always buying a raffle ticket.
In recent times Cyril would come to the club on his mobility scooter and be wheeled into the club on his wheelchair to enjoy a drink with his friends in the lounge. Cyril’s children, grand children and great grand children use the club most weeks, we offer them our condolences. All his friends and fellow members will sadly miss Cyril.

Wanted, Newsletter Contributions.

I have now been doing your newsletter for two years, during this time the one thing I have most enjoyed doing is bringing you the contributions from our fellow members. Often as I sit at my computer a few days before publication I am at a loss for content. We have the regular entertainment page, games page, front page and maybe a paid advert. Well that’s four easy pages, just another four to fill.
If you have any stories for us, or even an idea for a story or any requests, please let me know.

Room Hire.

As most of you will probably know, our concert room is available for hire for your celebrations. (Excluding 18th birthdays). But did you know that we have several rooms that can be used for smaller meetings. If you are involved with an organisation why don’t you ask us what we can offer you?
The cost of hiring the concert room on a Saturday night is excellent value at only £150 a night (not an hour like some other venues). The cost for an afternoon Christening or children’s birthday party is only £60. Or you could have the Lounge for only £45.
We also offer a various food options (ask Sarah for details) or you can supply your own. Whatever the event that you may be planning, why not ask us first?

Have you renewed your membership?

Any member who has not paid their subscription by 31st January has become a member in arrears. This means that they are not allowed into the Club until they pay their subscriptions.
Payments can be made in February on Sundays 7th 14th 21st 28th. 11.30 to 12.30. Or Mondays 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd. From 19.30 to 20.30
Anyone that has not paid will lose their membership and will not be allowed to reapply until March 2011.

Bar Tariff.

The annual round of price increases is upon us again. Wholesalers and the breweries are all announcing increases that are coming in at staggered times. Regretfully these prices will have to be passed on through bar prices. We will be passing them on as they arise.

We appreciate that there has already been an increase due to the VAT change from 1st January. This is money that has to be paid over to HM Revenue and Customs. It has not gone into the club's coffers.

There will also be an increase when the budget is set. This has already been promised by the Chancellor and will simply reflect money we will be paying over to him yet again.

All we can promise is that increases will be kept as low as possible, but regret that they cannot be avoided.

Charity Fund Raising Night.

Last year a grand charity event supporting the "Natalie Hill Hope For Life Fund” raised a magnificent £800+ in support of a local child. This year Natalie's mum, Vanessa hopes to top £1000. The Natalie Hill Hope For Life Fund is a registered charity managed by Vanessa Hill who many of you may remember used to work behind the bar at the club.
This year Vanessa has had the fantastic good fortune to enlist the support of one of our favourite groups of all time,” Accrington Stanley" a Beatles tribute group and also hopes to have a top rate support act. The event takes place on Saturday 5th June 2010
Tickets for the event will be on sale behind the bar from the end of February costing £5.00. There will also be a raffle and any donations or support would be appreciated. This is definitely a date to book for a good night out and an excellent cause.
Vanessa started this charity when her daughter Natalie aged 7, sadly passed away in 1993 having suffered from Neuroblastoma (cancer of the nervous system). The aim of the charity is to support terminally ill children and their families that live in the Northampton area.
Proceeds from this fundraising night will go to support Matt Herbert who suffers from Leukaemia. Matt has been featured in the Chronicle and is also being supported by the Saints. He attends The Northampton School for Boys. Please support this charitable cause.

Subscriptions 2010.

Subs for this year are payable from January 3rd to January 31st. At the end of this period any member who has not paid their subs become members in arrears and may not use the facilities of the club until they pay them.

After the 28th February those who have not paid lose their membership.
Please note that even if you joined the club at the end of 2009 subs are payable in full for 2010.

Following the rule change at the last AGM male members now qualify for life membership after 25 years. This means if you have had continuous membership since 1985 or before you are entitled to life membership. We also reward members on reaching 50, 60 and 70 years. All these awards are considered on receipt of application from members.
For life membership please deposit your membership and associate cards with the secretary and collect your life membership card and tie the following week.

Suggestion Box.

This month many of our members will be making their annual pilgrimage to the club to renew their membership. We have over 2000 members but only about 200 that regularly use the club. We know that we are the biggest and best club in Northampton, so they can’t be renewing their membership just for the associate card. The reason might be that not all of us can afford to visit our club as often as we may wish, but know that when we do have a night out our club offers them the best value for their money. What other club has entertainment every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night?
There may be many other reasons that some members don’t visit as often as they might like. Why don’t you spare a couple of minutes when you come to renew your membership and write down your reasons, and let us know what you think would bring you here more often and post them in our suggestion box in the main bar? If you don’t have time you can always email them to me at m.wright@ntlworld.com and I will pass them on.

Long Serving Members.

We are already getting requests for life-membership and long service awards. As mentioned elsewhere anyone who joined on or before 1985 can apply for life membership. Several members have asked me who is our longest serving member and who is our oldest? Unfortunately some of our old records were lost in one of the two fires that we had many years ago. I know that we have members that have been with us for 50 years and over. We also have many members over 65 that qualify for reduced membership fees. If you think you are one of the oldest or longest serving member please get in touch. Also if you have any stories from years gone by that you think our members would be interested in please let me know.

Obituaries.

Alan Newbery. Alan was an afternoon regular who always supported our raffles; often he could be seen having a game of cards with his mates. Our thoughts are with his mother Dot, brothers Ged, Steve, Bob and Kev.

Mark Knight. Mark was the manager of our Sunday football team. He was also a regular in our Tuesday night poker league. Our condolences go to Leanne, Daniel, his mum Denise, dad Phil, brother Darren and to his family and friends.

BIIAB Awards.

A couple of months ago the BIIAB (British Innkeeping Institute's Awarding Body) held a course in Beer & Cellar Quality at our club. We are proud to announce that six people from our club have been awarded with a certificate for passing the course. They are: Sarah Warren, Nathan George, Alan Beal, Ben Jones, Graham Burges and Richard Shanahan.
Special congratulations to Ben Jones who achieved second place overall.

Games News.

Following the death of Mark Knight all our football matches have been cancelled for the remainder of the season and our Monday night crib & ladies skittles matches on January 4th have been cancelled to allow the players to pay their respects.

Our annual Christmas Skittles Knockout was severely disrupted by the weather; we would like to thank those that made it and to congratulate the winner John Dunkley and runner-up Dougie Walden.

Congratulations also go to Alan Coles and Ramesh Chudasama who reached the semi-finals of the CIU crib knockout.

Charity Donation.

A donation of £600 was made to the Northampton Blind Association. This money was raised from the Boxing Day Raffle £300 and from the contents of the collection bottle on the bar. A letter of thanks has been received and is on display on the notice board.

Government puts the boot in - again!

Earlier this year the Government reduced VAT to 15% to soften the blow of the recession. True to form however, at the same time they increased the duty on alcohol so that the VAT saving was cancelled out.

From 1st January next year the VAT rate is to be increased to 17.5%, but the duty increase is not going to be reversed. This means an extra 5 pence of every pint sold goes to the Government from 1st January.

You will understand from our previous disclosures about our financial position that the club cannot absorb this cost.

It is with great regret that the price of all draught beers will increase by 5 pence per pint and all bottled alcoholic drinks and other alcoholic measures will also increase by 5 pence from 1st January 2010.

The Government, at its most cynical, has decreed that the VAT rate shall not go up until 06.00 on 1st January so that the first drink to see in the New Year will be at 15%.

With a General Election looming, it may be the time now for us as individual members to start lobbying our prospective Members of Parliament.

If you want to help make a difference, come and have a chat with the General Secretary Monday 7th December at 2000 in the Ken Taylor Lounge. The easiest thing in the world is to say, "What difference can one person make?" The only way to get change is by the joint action of a lot of one persons together. We just may be able to work something out that is worth doing!
Light at the end of the tunnel.

You may recall that we issued a special newsletter in August informing you of our results to the end of June. For the first six months we made a loss of £34K. For the next three months to 30th September we made a loss of £5k. By any standards this is a remarkable turn around for the quietest three months of the year. The tariff is at a level that can sustain our overheads if we can keep a lid on them.
A continuing improvement in the quality of our service and presentation of our beers is a high priority.
This recovery is in its infancy and is very fragile because the effect of the credit crunch is still being felt and will continue to be felt for some time to come.

If, we could just rid ourselves of the petty vandalism that blights our club; mainly in the toilets.

If, the small minority could refrain from grinding chewing gum, crisps and sweets into the carpets.

If, the small minority could kerb their foul language, even when football is showing.

Then, our club would be more welcoming and the members, associates and guests we have lost through being fed up with the vandalism or are intimidated by the bad language just might come back.

More than ever we need the loyalty of our members to sustain our recovery and ensure the light at the end of the tunnel is sunlight and not a train coming straight at us.

Help for Heroes.

Thank you to all that took part. We managed to raise £350 for the cause.
We are pleased to announce that this will be an annual event on the Friday nearest the 11th November.

Welfare Payout.

The December 2009 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during December, commencing on Sunday 6th December 2009.

The next Welfare Payments will be made in March 2010.

The Treasure Chest.

The purpose of the treasure chest is to raise money to help pay for the club’s entertainment and senior citizens and life members functions.

Each new jackpot will start at £100.00.
Tickets will be sold for £1.00 per strip of five. Half of the money from ticket sales after deducting the consolation prize will be added to the treasure chest fund to be paid out if the treasure chest is opened. £25.00 will be paid out each week as a consolation to the person who wins the key but cannot open the chest.
All remaining monies will be used for the purposes of the treasure chest as stated above. The draw will be made every Sunday at about 21.15pm.
The number of keys will start at 21 and will reduce by one on a weekly basis until only 3 keys are left. They will remain at this number until the treasure chest is opened. Committee members will not hold tickets for people who are not in the club when the draw is made. Tickets are available from the Welfare Table on Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtime and evenings.

Halloween Fancy Dress.

A £25 prize is up for grabs for both the best Adults and the best Childs costume on the evening of the 31st October.

Improvements.

Sharp-eyed members will have noticed our new television; we have also installed a new aerial and we are now able to get the satellite channels.
We have had the seats professionally cleaned and new blinds are on order. We ask our members to appreciate our efforts and respect their fellow members comfort by reframing from standing on the seats.

New Bar Management Regime.

As a Management Committee we are constantly looking at ways of improving the quality of service to our members, always having in mind the cost of those services. This coupled with the current financial position we are all in creates the need for some hard decisions to be taken.

It has been decided that instead of having a steward and assistant steward, we are going to have a “Front of House Manager” with two assistants; one with the main responsibility of running the cellar and producing an excellent pint and the other with the main responsibility of ensuring every visitor to the club comes into a welcoming environment to be served by staff who will always present a drink as it is meant to be poured.

With great regret, we have had to declare the position held by Michael Doy as Steward is redundant and he has left the club’s employ.

Sarah Warren has been offered the position of front of house manager and Nathan George that as her assistant with responsibility for running the cellar. The position for the other assistant is being advertised and interviews will be held shortly.

This reorganisation will result in a reduction in costs and it will free the house used by the Steward to be used as a source of income.

Your support through this transition that we are sure all will benefit from will be greatly appreciated. We are sure you will soon be able to appreciate a further improvement the quality of service you will receive.

Real Ale.

Members have been asking why we don’t get this or that beer as our real ale. It has been decided that one of our pumps will be reserved for our member’s choice. If you know of a good local beer that you think will go down well with our members, let us know and we will try and get it for you. Post your choice in the suggestion box.
Thank you to all that voted in the raffle prize survey. The overwhelming choice was for beer tickets. The tickets have been ordered and we will be incorporating then in the prizes soon.

Help for Heroes.

Friday November 13th will be our Help for Heroes Day. Start the day with one of Sarah’s Set breakfasts for only £3.00. Available between 12.00 & 3.00pm. Enjoy an afternoon of entertainment with Book It & Risk It.
In the evening The Beer Palor Jivers will keep you entertained. We will have raffles in the afternoon and evening with all proceeds going to the Help for Heroes Fund.

Children’s Pantomime.

This years offering is Aladdin. It will be on Saturday December 19th.
2.00 – 4.45pm. Free for Children between 4 and 14.

Committee Vacancy.

Due to the resignation of Dave Yates, there is a vacancy on the Committee.
Volunteers are invited for this post that will initially be that of assistant in the Welfare Section. The holder of this post will also take a full part; as a member of the management committee; in the management of the club.
To qualify, the applicant must be a full financial member of at least six month’s standing.
For further details please see John Carnegie-Brown who will give all details of how the welfare department is run and Barry Slasberg as regards the responsibilities of a Committee Member and how to register your interest.
In these difficult times, people with time, energy and dedication are needed more than ever to support and help run our club.

Room Hire 2010.

Room hire brings in much needed revenue to the club. The concert room bookings for 2009 are full.
If you have a Birthday, Wedding, Engagement or Anniversary planned for next year get your booking in now. (Please note we do not accept bookings for eighteenth birthdays). The cost to hire the room is £150 so if you have something to arrange, get in touch with Barry quickly.

The Concert Room is also available Sunday mornings for Christenings.
Smaller rooms are available mid-week for all sorts of events and meetings. If you have a group that is looking for a new venue, we have the rooms available.

Conditions for Hire of the Function Room.

ADMISSION

Under the legislation that governs this club the Management Committee is not allowed to let the room to the public at large.
A full list of the names of those attending the party must be deposited with the Secretary at least 48 hours before the function.

COST

The cost for the hire of the room is £150.00 of which £75.00 is payable as a non-returnable deposit on application and the balance payable no later than one month before the hire date.
SUPPLYOF ALCOHOLIC REFRESHMENTS
Only members and associates may obtain refreshments from the bar.

CHILDREN

Except for the use of toilets children must not enter any other part of the premises without the adult who is responsible in attendance.

HOURS

All amplified entertainment must cease 23.20.
The bar will stop serving at 23.30
The club must be vacated by 24.00

BREAKAGES

The hirer must pay for all breakages of whatever nature caused by any of the party using the function room. £100.00 is payable as a returnable deposit no later than one month before the hire date.

Litter.

Dropping litter is unsightly and is an offence for which fines can be imposed. If you are smoking outside our neighbour’s shops, we ask you to have respect for them and use the receptacles provided to dispose of your butts and not to drop them or throw them away. Members are also reminded that under no circumstances should they take their drink out front with them.

Bluegrass Jam Sessions.

These sessions held on the first Wednesday of the month are becoming very popular with our members. If you enjoy a bit of bluegrass come along and enjoy an excellent night of entertainment. The singing & music are un-amplified so we ask you to listen quietly so not to spoil it for others. If you want to talk and not listen please stay in the bar.

On Saturday October 10th The Mirror will have a voucher for A Free Pint of Carlsberg in it. Order you copy now, tell all your friends to order their copy and bring them along to the club and enjoy A Free Pint of Carlsberg.
The voucher is valid on the 10th of October only. Unfortunately; only one voucher per customer. Make sure you don’t miss out.

Suggestion Box.

One of the recent suggestions in the suggestion box was that we should lower the age to sixteen that people could buy soft drinks and snacks from the bar. This is a private members club and only members can be served at the bar. This means that if you bring friends or family to the club they are not allowed to purchase intoxicating liquor.
As people can leave school at sixteen and maybe lucky enough to get a job and have their own money, your committee has decided to change the rule and allow anyone over the aged sixteen or over to purchase soft drinks and snacks from the bar.
This goes to show that we do read and act on your sensible suggestions and we do note your comments. It is your suggestion box, so if you have any bright ideas use the box.

The members notice board (another idea from the suggestion box) is situated below the new television in the bar, So far only one member is making use of it. I know there are lots of builders, carpenters, plumbers, plasterers, mechanics etc that use our club, so why not publicize yourselves by making use of our free service? If you have a business card give it to me and I will photocopy it, enlarge it and put it on the board for you. Maybe you have a wanted or an offer that we can publicize for you, if you want I can type them out for you. But please remember the maximum size for notices is 6x4 inches (15x10cm), larger notices may be removed.

Players Wanted.

Our teams are always on the lookout for new players; sometimes it’s a struggle to get a full team. So Men if you fancy joining our Football, Crib, Snooker, Poker, Air Gun, Pool or Skittles. For the Ladies we have Skittles and Darts teams get in touch and we will put you in touch with the team captains.
Congratulations to both our ladies darts teams for finishing runners-up in their leagues. This last season we have had a few seconds; let’s hope we can all go one better this season.

Suggestion box.

Those eagle-eyed members amongst you will have spotted our new suggestion box; it is fixed to the column nearest to the main door in the bar. The committee are setting aside time each week to discus your suggestions, comments and questions. If you want an answer please leave contact details.
We have already implemented some suggestions, unfortunately we can’t lower the age that you are allowed to buy a drink to 16, the government wont let us.

Kingsley Park Bluegrass Jam.

The jam is open to all players of acoustic instruments and singers who appreciate the style of bluegrass and country music. Listeners are welcome.
The jam etiquette is as follows; The players sit is a circle with one lead person choosing the tune and taking the solo part, the remainder embellishing his/her playing/singing and or taking a lead break/fill in during the tune if they know the tune and are called on to do so.
During the session the solo part keeps moving round the circle in turn with each player/singer having the opportunity to take or decline it.

The jams will run monthly on the first Wednesday of the month starting on September 2nd at 8:00pm. In the Ken Taylor Lounge.

Rooms Available.

Would you like the free use of one of our rooms between Monday morning and Friday afternoon for your group or event?
We have rooms of various sizes available during opening hours for all types of usage. All we ask is that you make use of our refreshments. You don’t have to buy alcohol, we are quite happy to provide the coffee for your coffee morning, supply buffets etc all at reasonable prices to suit your needs.

Welfare Payout.

The September 2009 Welfare Payout will be made to qualifying members on Fridays between 7.00 pm and 9.00 pm and Sundays between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm during September, commencing on Sunday 6th September 2009.
The next Welfare Payments will be made in December 2009.

Members Notice board.

One of the requests in the suggestion box was for a member’s notice board so members could advertise their services etc on. It has been agreed that you may display postcard sized adverts (6x4). If any member wishes to use this service let me know and I will find a space for them.

Christmas Raffle.

Yes it’s that time of year again. Our Christmas draw tickets go on sale from the first week in September. Back by popular demand are the cash prizes. 1st £500, 2nd £250 & 3rd £100 Plus lots of other prizes.
Tickets will be on sale at the Welfare Table, from committee members, from the doorman and from behind the bar. Draw Tuesday December 8th.

Corridor Closed.

In an effort to save on energy cost, the corridor between the front door and the concert room will be closed from Monday morning to Friday afternoon.
If you need to use the disabled toilet or the baby changing room please ask the bar staff to open the door for you. Otherwise please use the bar toilets.

Old newsletters.

All the old newsletters published between November 2001 and December 2005 are now available on our website. http://kingsleyparkwmc.blogspot.com/
Soon you will be able to read the newsletters from 2006 to present. They are well worth a read, you can see the ideas that sounded good at the time but failed to take off. Also things that keep cropping up time after time.

Friday Night Disco.

Friday night’s entertainment will now be our very own Bob Horner with his Disco. Bob has access to all type of music, if you have a favourite song ask Bob and he will try and find it for you.

Smoking Area.

Despite further spending on the smoking area members continue to abuse it. It took less than a week for someone to force open the locked door.
We have now been forced to spend further and buy a lock and chain for the door. The smoking area should be cleared by 11:00pm, this does not mean you all wait until 10:58 to make your way out to start your last cigarette, it means you should be finished. If anyone is found in the smoking area after 11:00 they might find themselves on a charge for breaking club rules.
Taxi, Free Phone Service.

It has been decided to do away with the coin phone box in the corridor. This phone was costing us more to rent than we were receiving in charges, it was mainly used at the end of the night to ring for a taxi. So to save you money we now have a free phone that goes straight through to Mayfair taxis. The phone is situated above the counter in the doorman’s office. To justify this service it must be used.
We have taken out the line with the number 715514. In future please use our main number 711002 for general purposes and 719800 for the secretary.

Obituary.

Sadly we have to report the death of Bob Brawn. Bob was well known around the clubs having served on the committee at Monks Park. Our condolences go to his wife Kathleen, his family and friends
