Suggestion Box.

Last year we invited you to a special meeting to suggest ways to improve our finances but only two members cared enough to turn up.
You may have noticed some of the changes we have made in recent times but we are still open to suggestions. To make it easier for you we are going to install a suggestion box in the bar.
Please let us have your ideas you can do it anonymously. However silly they may sound, who knows it might work. Please don’t ask us to do the impossible it won’t fit.

Members Letter to Chronicle and Echo.

29th June 09
The Editor,
Chronicle and Echo,
Dear Sir,
We are writing to inform you of something about which we are truly outraged and we believe should be of interest to all of your readers.
We are members of Kingsley Park Working Men's Club. The members raise money from time to time to donate to worthy causes. The Committee became aware that certain members of the Royal British Legion were having difficulty financing their trips to Normandy and decided to make a small donation to assist two veterans make the trip.
Being of the old school, both veterans wrote to thank the club for its support.
It makes our blood boil when we hear of people who have truly served our country being bound up with red tape and expense to almost be deprived of such an important celebration as this.
The amounts repaid by Members of Parliament on their expenses could most probably have financed every veteran who wanted to go to Normandy. Perhaps these politicians could learn from listening to silly old fools like Bernard, something about what serving our country really means.
Then you see things like footballers being paid stupendous sums and the reason being that their careers are short lived. Every serving member of the armed forces faces a career length in action that potentially does not last a day! Every one of them is worth 10 times what the highest paid footballer earns.
When are we going to get our priorities right and put Britain's true heroes at the top of the list for a little luxury as a thank you for what they have given?
Certainly bankers and politicians are needed to run our country and sport and entertainment are needed to give us a quality of life; but let us not forget that we would not have a country but for the veterans!!!
Just two of us have written this letter but we are sure we represent the feelings of every patriotic member of Kingsley Park Working Men's Club.
Yours in anger, Kevin Fardon. Lee Winter.

Bob & Doreen Langton.

1949 2009

On the 9th July Bob and Doreen Langton who were married in St Matthews Church had their Diamond Wedding Anniversary and on the 11th they gathered with their family and friends to celebrate at Kingsley Park WMC.

Bob’s Father Bill was also a life member; they lived at the bottom of Moore Street close to the old club, he tells us that when the houses were first built his father was offered one for £80. It was through his Father that Bob joined the club when he was seventeen in 1940. Bob joined the Navy in 1942 serving his country until 1946.

In 1946 Bob Started to play for Kingsley Park’s Football team. He later went on to represent us at Skittles, Darts and Dominoes.

Bob spent his working life in the shoe industry with Dolcis, later The British Shoe Corporation, starting as a boy and working his way up to chief purchasing officer, travelling around the world buying the best leather for our shoes.

It was while visiting the leather tanneries in Kanpur India that Bob caught the dreaded Kanpur Cough a health hazard in the tanning industry.
We congratulate them both and hope to see them in the club for many years to come.

Obituary.

Sadly we have to report the loss of Mr D Thomson just a few weeks before his 65th Birthday, Our thoughts are with his Family and friends.
Charity Donation.

Brian Dolby with the Helicopter Ride Raffle raised £200 for the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

Newsletter Archive.

You can find most of our old newsletters on our Blog. http://kingsleyparkwmc.blogspot.com/

We started at the end of 2001 and the first 5 years are now available and I hope to add the rest in the next couple of weeks.

Why not have a look through them? They provide a history of what has been happening in the club in the last 8 years.

Smoking Area.

We have been asking you for some time to respect our neighbours. We have tried to close the smoking area at 11pm but some members think that this does not reply to them. We have now ordered a lock for the door. Members will be asked to vacate the smoking area at 11pm and the door will be locked.

Members are reminded that children under 18 are not allowed in the smoking area without an adult.

Any members that do not comply may find themselves on a disciplinary charge.

On the 19th July two of our Trustees were presented with long service awards (10 Year) by our president.

Bingo Sessions

Every Friday, Every Sunday and Saturdays 8th and 15th

Remember that it is Eyes Down at 8.45 p.m. every session. We hope you enjoy this small change. It will give you a bit more time to enjoy the entertainment in the bar or just relax a bit longer in the concert room after the excitement of playing Bingo.

Kingsley Park’s Celebration of Real Ale (in association with Greene King)

They say variety is the spice of life. This year we are adding a little spice to our beer festival.

We are setting up the barrels in the concert room for Tuesday 25th, Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th October. That’s right, the beer will be poured from the barrels to the glass.

As we go to press, it is anticipated that, in addition to IPA which will still be available at the bar, we will be serving Old Bob 5%, Ruddles Orchard 4.2%, Ruddles Best 3.7%, Moorlands Original 4%, Greene King Mild 3%, Ruddles County 4.3% and a great favourite; Speckled Hen 5.2%.

For these three days, only the concert room will be open at lunch times, but both bar and concert room will be open in the evenings.

On Tuesday night we will be running a quiz night that will be hosted by Paul Jenkins who is the Greene King Rep. He promises to bring some prizes with him. The evening will be in his hands. There will be a session of Aces High that will include any rollover money from previous quiz nights as a potential prize.

On Wednesday night we will be having a Curry Night and there will be entertainment as well.

On Thursday night we will be running a Race Night.

Three nights to savour. Book them in your diary now!

Food Glorious Food

Our new autumn menu will shortly be available for your enjoyment. Unfortunately, we have had to put prices up to cater for the huge fuel increase and to cover other overheads. Even with the increases, the prices will be extremely reasonable. However, there are many great deals to be had with lunchtime specials; sports specials when matches are being shown on Sky; Kiddies boxed meals mid-week deals and monthly specials.

We also have an excellent Christmas menu already lined up, details of which you will shortly be able to see in the club menu folders. We are holding our Christmas Party Night on 15th December. On offer is a truly scrumptious three-course meal, with a glass of wine and the favourite Christmas Cracker thrown all for only £15.00 per head.

On Sundays, following requests received, we are reintroducing waiter/ess service on Sundays. As many of you have said, it is this that helps make us that little bit different.

This all adds up great food, great variety and great value for money seven days a week.

Men’s Supper and Games Presentation Evening

It is not an understatement to say this must be one of the best line-ups for this evening the Club has ever presented.

Our after-dinner speaker is Tommy Docherty. Yes, it is THE DOC, the great Scottish soccer legend and king of the One Liners. This man is the tops!

Other entertainment will come in the form of highly rated comedian, Ronnie Stewart, and a magicienne who goes under the name of Lynx.

Top that with an excellent three-course meal and we once again have a recipe for a brilliant night out

Tickets for this exceptional evening, Thursday 10th November, are only £12.50. They are available from the Games Secretary.

Welfare Section Update

The Welfare table in the main bar is manned every Sunday from 12 noon to 1.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. and Fridays from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. when Dave Yates Our Welfare Secretary or John Carnegie-Brown, his assistant will be pleased to discuss any Section matters.

Treasure Chest

Tickets are available from the Welfare table when open, or from the main bar at any time. The minimum prize for opening the box is £500 rising £50 weekly until won. The prize has on occasion risen to over £1600. There is a consolation prize of £100 for a winning ticket that does not open the treasure chest.

The draw is made weekly at 9.15 p.m. on a Sunday. If the prize is not claimed there is no re-draw, but the consolation prize goes to Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

Savings Club

The Savings club has been running for a year now. It is a simple and safe way to put your money away until such time as you need it. There is no interest payable, but also there are none of the fines etc that used to eat up the interest in the old divi clubs.

This is well worth considering if you just do not have the self-discipline to put money into your own savings accounts. The rules are simple and you can get at your money any time, subject to seven days notice.

The Tote

Just pick 20 pairs of numbers between one and thirty for £1 and add two more pairs for free. If any of your pairs come up; and they can be reversed; you share a pot of £150 with any other people who have chosen the same pair.

The numbers are drawn at 1.00 p.m. every Sunday.

2005 Christmas Draw

Posters can be seen all around the advertising this annual extravaganza and orgy of prizes. Tickets are £1.00 for a book of five. 20 pence could win you £1000 or any one of a myriad of prizes. Unclaimed prizes go into a special Boxing Day Raffle in aid of the Northampton Blind Association. So this is a winner all round!

The Welfare Section

This section is open to our members who have held membership for 12 months. The current subscription is £4.00.

After twelve months membership of the Section you become entitled to sick pay when on certificated absence from work. This is currently £15 per week for up to eight weeks in any twelve-month period; subject to some conditions and limitations

After 5 years membership, once you have attained the age of 65 you become entitled to a quarterly payout of £15.

Not bad for a subscription of only £4 per year!

Please see Dave or John if you wish to benefit from any of these services.

LOCAL CHILDREN IN NEED SPONSORED MARATHON

OUR ANNUAL 12 HOUR MARATHON IS BEING HELD ON 22ND OCTOBER FROM 9.00 A.M. TO 9.00 P.M.

WE NEED PEOPLE TO DO ANY OF OUR INDOOR GAMES FOR 12 HOURS TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL CHILDREN’S CHARITIES, SCHOOLS AND INDIVIDUAL CHILDREN IN NEED.

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS EFFORT. GET A SPONSOR FORM FROM THE EVER POPULAR BIG KEV FARDON OR THE SECRETARY.

YOUR SUPPORT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

THANK YOU.

Obituary

On Tuesday, 20th September we said our farewells to Mick Brett. He died peacefully in his sleep after a short period of being under the weather, diagnosed as pneumonia after his death. It was typical of Mick not to have made a fuss about things, as he must have felt pretty ill for those last few days.

Mick was a loyal servant to the club. He was on the Committee for many years, first on entertainment and then as Vice- President until his stroke ten years ago.

He lost most of his power of speech, but generally found ways to communicate. He was in the club most days of the week and his not being present in the club leaves a palpable gap here.

Our condolences go to his family, and I think it true to say that for many of us in the club, our loss will be as deep as a loss of a family member.

Rest in peace Mick.

In the case of the death of any club member, if their family or friends wish to say some words through the newsletter they will be welcome. All contributions to The Secretary please.

Dates for the Diary

Tuesdays 11th and 25th October Quiz Nights

Please note that these have been moved back one week to cover Bamber’s holiday and the quiz night to be held during the beer festival.

The second evening will be a total novelty with Greene King Brewery supplying some different prizes and the Quizmaster. Aces high will be played at both sessions.

Thursday 27th October Race Night

This again will be in association with our beer festival. There could well be some interesting innovations here also.

Thursday 10th November Men’s Supper and Games Presentation Evening

See the earlier feature for the evening’s programme. Add the fact that our Cribbage B Team won the branch CIU Knockout; our Darts and Dominoes teams were losing semi-finalists in the CIU knockouts, our Snooker A team, Football and Darts teams all won their leagues, and we have real reason to celebrate our games achievements over the last year.

Thursday 24th November Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party

We are proud to present another not-to-be-missed night. Enjoy a beautiful meal, excellent entertainment and the best of company. See the notice boards for when the tickets are being issued. A £5 deposit will be required that will be returned to everyone on arriving for the evening. Otherwise the deposit will not be refundable. As ever, Brian Dolby will be the master of ceremonies for this evening.

Saturday 17th December Children’s Pantomime

At 12.30 p.m. we are proud to present Cinderella for your children’s delight. Tickets will be available from the Entertainment section from the beginning of November. Look out for the times on the notice boards and be there early to avoid disappointment.

And Finally

You will have seen in the local press and on our notice board that we have been granted our Club Premises Certificate under the 2003 Licensing Act to enable us to continue supplying alcohol after 24th November 2005.

It is important to stress the two conditions laid down by the issuing authority, Northampton Borough Council. The first is that all entertainment must finish fifteen minutes after the final bell and the second that the club empty thirty minutes after the final bell.

These are conditions that if not honoured could lead to our Certificate being revoked.

Also, there were several letters of complaint from neighbours about noise late at night. The Committee urges all those who use the club to show respect and consideration to those living near the club by being as quiet as possible when leaving.

The Committee wishes to thank you all in anticipation of your cooperation in this matter.

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News November 2005

Ken Taylor Club Member of the Year 2005

Two nominations have flooded in for the first ever Club Member of the Year Award.

We have many members who are worthy of consideration and you, dear members, know who they are.

People who have excelled in games; people who have supported games; people who have supported the bar; people who have been friends to the club without fuss or fanfare.

There is no limit to the genuine reasons for nomination.

This is a serious award instituted in serious honour of Ken Taylor, a serious hero of Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club.

Nominations close on 30th November and the E.C. will choose the winner from nominations received and the result will be declared on the evening of the Christmas Draw.

There will be a roll of honour prominently displayed in the club. The winner shall receive a free main course meal every week of the calendar year following the award.

Nomination forms are available from the Secretary.

Entertainment November 2005

Our Entertainment Secretary, Chris has been on a well-earned holiday and as a result at the time of going to press we do not have details of November’s entertainment programme. We will be putting some extra posters up in the club to keep you fully informed. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you.

Bingo Sessions

For the month of November there will be sessions every Friday, every Sunday and Saturdays 12th & 26th. Eyes down at 8.45 p.m. for every session appears to have met with universal approval and so will continue.

Sunday Morning Bar Times

We do have a small number of members who come in to the Club early on Sunday mornings and sit for up to an hour waiting patiently in eager anticipation of their first pint at 12 noon. Your Committee has decided that, with effect from Sunday 27th November 2005, the main bar will open at 11.00 am for the sales of alcoholic beverages for a trial period. The other bars and the restaurant shall retain the current opening times.

Early morning alarm calls may be arranged for a small fee!

Local Children in Need Fund Raising

The total income from the skittles marathon held on 22nd October is set to top the £1500 mark. Nine people played for the full twelve hours knocking down and stacking up 9193 skittles. The undoubted star of the day was Kev Fardon who hit 1161 including 27 stack-ups.

We also had one person who played pool for twelve hours.

Thanks to all who took part. The final total and the destination of some of the money raised will be reported next month.

At the quiz night on 25th October, the participants gave up half their winnings for Children in Need totalling £22. Thank you for your generosity.

Greene King donated beer festival glasses that were sold at£1.00 each in aid of Children in Need. The total raised will be reported next month. Thank you Greene King.

Treasure Chest Bonanza

On October 2nd the Treasure Chest was opened and the lucky winner scooped no less than £1750.00. It was the first time the Chest had been opened since 3rd April.

After the next time it is opened your Executive Committee has decided to raise the starting prize from £500.00 to £750.00. Be here Sunday nights to experience the thrill of Treasure Chest Fever.

Savings Club

As the time approaches for some organisations to pay out their Christmas Divi’s, now should be the time for planning next year’s savings.

Come and speak to John Carnegie-Brown or Dave Yates at the Welfare table and see how our savings club measures up for flexibility and convenience.

You could be very pleasantly surprised. The rules are simple and minimal and John or Dave will help you through them to make any transition as painless as possible.

Christmas Draw

What ever you do, do not miss out on buying your Christmas Draw tickets this year. What would the £1000 first prize do for your celebrations?

They can be obtained from the door staff, the welfare table, behind the main bar or from any member of the Committee. £1.00 for five chances to win any one of the almost 100 prizes.

Games News

Branch Knock-out Competitions

A historic change has been given the go ahead at the recent six monthly South East Midlands Branch Council meeting of the CIU. This is a meeting at which all 88 clubs in the branch are entitled to attend through delegates appointed by their Committees.

For 2006, approval has been given to allow women to be entered in teams. In effect this means that both single-sex and mixed-sex teams may enter for all the branch knockout competitions.

The details are yet to be ironed out. The principle of women being allowed to enter clubs to which they do not belong in order to compete has been given tacit approval by the minister responsible Richard Cabourne in a statement in the House of Commons. His stated concern is that clubs continue to be run as bona fide private members clubs and do not open their doors to the public.
Thank you, Carlsberg

In recent months there has been some discontent amongst our members about the consistency of the quality of Tetley Cask. This has been acknowledged by Carlsberg who have kindly given us a deal by which we have been able to offer this product at 20p off a pint for one month.

When we were visited by Cask Marque, an independent organisation which examines of Cask Ales, on 18th October, they judged Tetley Cask to be served at the perfect temperature; Brilliant in appearance; Appetizing in its aroma and of excellent taste.

Let us hope that this beer will retain its respected position in the club for a long time to come.

Dates for the Diary

Tuesdays 8th & 22nd November Quiz Nights

We are pleased to offer two more nights of fun and frivolity, with the possibility of going home with big money if you win Aces High. Bamber will be back in the chair with his usual selection of fun-to-answer questions. Come along for 8.30 and join in the fun.

Thursday 10th November Men’s Supper and Games Presentation Evening

Tickets are now available at £12.50 for this evening of celebration of a great year of achievement in the club and a great evening’s food and entertainment. Tommy “The Doc” Docherty is our after dinner speaker. It is a guarantee that he will have you crying in your beer with laughter. If there is any laughter left in you, it will surely be used up with listening to Ronnie Stewart who always goes down well when he visits us. Finally, you will be amazed at the magical talents of Lynx; a magnificent magicienne.

Tickets are limited, so see Pete Kirby early to avoid disappointment.

Thursday 17th November Race Night

It was a little disappointing to see so few of our regulars at the September meeting. If the numbers get up enough we hope to reintroduce these great entertainment evenings twice a month through the winter.

Thursday 24th November Senior Citizen’s Christmas Party

Tickets are available from Brian Dolby for this most enjoyable night out. A £5.00 deposit is required on the issue of the ticket. It will be returned to all who turn up on the night.

Thursday 1st December A presentation by Neville Fickling

The Northampton Specimen Group are proud to host a presentation by Neville Fickling who has written five books on his specialities, being Pike and Zander.

The group has issued an open invitation to Club members and associates interested in this topic. The meeting will start at about 8.00 p.m. in the concert room.

Saturday 17th December Children’s Pantomime

Our annual panto, Cinderella, will start at 12.30 p.m. this is a free entertainment open to children and grandchildren of members only. In past years tickets have gone to others and our own children have missed out. When collecting tickets, you will be asked for the names of the children and your relationship to them along with proof of your membership. We thank you for your cooperation.

And finally

I would refer back to our lead article. Your nominations for Club Member of the Year 2005 would be very much appreciated.

If any member has any comments or views they want published on any matter to do with the club or club life, please contact me. I can accept your written word; however I maintain the right to edit subject to informing you before publication. If you are not happy writing, I will gladly put your views in writing (even if they do not agree with mine) for your approval before publication.

December 2005

EDITORIAL

What about the women then?

Who ever heard of women HGV drivers, brickies, managing directors and the like twenty years ago? They were freaks and oddities. Something to be laughed at and ridiculed. That was twenty years ago. Today, it is commonplace to see women driving huge lorries and doing building work. Some of the highest paid and most successful executives in the land are women.

They do their jobs well; and sometimes badly; alongside men without any sense of difference in the work place about the job in hand because of gender.

And what about women in Working Men’s Clubs? Over half the clubs in the CIU today have women with full membership, who can attend and vote at members’ meetings and who can stand on their club’s Executive Committees. Like the men, some are good, some are bad and some are indifferent. The difference about those clubs as opposed to ours is that in them men and women work together as equals for the good of the club to which they belong. Twenty years ago oddities; today the norm.

And what about Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club? In the South East Midlands Branch 53 of our 88 clubs have full women membership. The question is, are we getting out of touch with what is going on in the world today, or are we standing up for a principle that must be honoured in the name of everything we believe the CIU stands for? (The formal policy of the CIU is full square behind the 53 clubs with full women membership.)

It might be interesting to note that the first National Executive Council of the CIU was made up of 14 men and 8 women. Women were instrumental in forming at least two of our founder clubs.

They were good enough to take a major part in starting the CIU. Are they not good enough to join with us men in fighting for the continued success of this club today?

The decision is in the hands of the male members of the club. If you want to share equally the running of this club with women, you can move a notice of motion at the club’s Annual General Meeting in February. A two-thirds majority in favour would give women full membership by adopting what is known as “The Interpretation Rule.” If you are happy with things staying as they are, you need to do nothing.

As a member of this club for 28 years, I would urge the club to adopt the interpretation rule because I believe many women use the club as much as we men and love the club as much as we men do. As General Secretary of this club I would urge you to adopt the interpretation rule because it would open up a whole new aspect to the management of the club. This should be regarded as an opportunity not to be missed rather than a threat.

This is my personal view, not necessarily the view of the Executive Committee. What is yours?

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club Newsletter December 2005

LOCAL CHILDREN IN NEED

At the time of going to press, the sum raised from the sponsored skittles marathon and other minor collections has come to the magnificent total of £1250, and there is still more to come

Some of this money will be spent on providing equipment for the Children’s Hearing Unit at the Northampton General Hospital. They are in urgent need of a text phone, a fax machine and a case to hold equipment for their domiciliary visits to new clinics being set up in the community during December.

A date everyone must put in the diary is Saturday 4th February 2006.

This is the date of our Children in Need extravaganza. A brilliant group that we have not seen for some time at the Club will be entertaining us at a low price in support of our appeal for Local Children in Need. Accrington Stanley will be joining us. They will be supported by another favourite of Kingsley Park WMC, the brilliant comedian Pete Lucas.

Tickets will be on sale just after Christmas at only £5.00. Numbers will be limited and demand will be high. Look out for the notice board with sale details and get in quick.

We will also be running a prize draw on the night. Any donations of raffle prizes will be gratefully accepted. Please leave them with the Steward or Secretary. Thank you.

From 26th December through to 31st December inclusive, there will be a limited supply of baguettes on sale through the day.

In order to ensure we have adequate supplies for Sunday 1st January, we will only be able to serve you if you have booked in advance. If you are fed up with cooking and washing up, give Steve or Shirley a ring on 01604 715514 and get a little pampered.

Welfare Section

The last Tote draw for 2005 will be made Sunday 18th December. The first day for sale of tickets in 2006 will be 6th January.

The Savings Club will close on Sunday 18th December and re-open on Friday 6th January.

The Treasure Chest will not be drawn Christmas weekend.

Festive Food

Our catering staff have once again excelled in their choice of the set Christmas Meal that is available from 1st to 23rd December inclusive: -

Start your meal with a choice of Prawn Cocktail or Pork, Apple & Calvados Pate.

For your main course the choice is, Turkey, Beef, Salmon or the vegetarian option of Mushroom, Brie, Rocket & Redcurrant Filo Bundle. (It’s gorgeous!)

Your choice will be served with Pigs in Blankets (not for vegetarians!), Yorkshire, Carrots, Brussels, Green Beans and Roast Potatoes.

Sweet is either Christmas Pudding with Brandy Custard or Orange & Cranberry Meringue Roulade.

Finish the meal with a nice cup of coffee and mints.

Not bad for only £12.50. Look around and you will see lesser meals for twice the price or more.

It would be appreciated if you could book as soon as possible if you are coming with a party for this gastronomic orgy. We want to ensure we have enough food and staff on to ensure everyone enjoys the evening and gets what they want when they want it.

Please try and pay by the 28th January. We hope the club is as valuable to you as you are to the club. Your Management Committee does not wish to lose one member through non-payment of subscriptions on time, but its hands are bound by club rules. If you have a genuine reason for not being able to pay at the above times, please contact the Secretary to make an alternative appointment. You may pay by post or get a friend to pay for you. Personal attendance is not a condition for payment. All that is needed is for your current membership and associate card to be presented on payment.

Men’s Supper & Games Presentation Evening

Our thanks go to Pete Kirby for arranging yet another superb evening. Great food, great entertainment and a lot of achievements of which our club can be proud.

Kingsley Management has always been keen to support games, recognising that they lay at the heart of our club. This they do so by providing heavily subsidised food for home matches, grants and transport. (Admittedly some teams use their own transport.) They always receive requests for help sympathetically.

It was therefore most disappointing that on the one night the club looks for support from those they support year in, year out, hardly any was forthcoming.

Some did not even bother to come to collect their hard earned trophies.

Your Management is determined to continue its wholehearted support of all the games sections. All it asks is that next year as many who benefit from that support as possible come and enjoy this annual celebration of excellence in games.

The Licensing Act 2003

We have received some correspondence stating that we have not given full details of our Club Premises Certificate. We believe that a list of details of the Act as it applies to the Club would be ideal fodder for a good snooze, and have therefore given only information that is important from a practical point of view. Here are some of the main points, which include some not stated before. We must stress the following is the Law of the Land and not something dreamed up by your Management Committee.

It is illegal for anyone under 18 to drink alcoholic beverages on the premises. Personal liability attaches to Bar Staff and the Committee and Secretary if this law is not enforced.

It is illegal for anyone to buy alcoholic beverages for anyone under 18. Personal liability attaches to the person who acquires the drink.

It is illegal to supply alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be drunk.

All entertainment must finish no later than 15 minutes after the final bell.

The premises must be empty no later than 30 minutes after the final bell.

The Management Committee would ask for your total cooperation if Bar Staff ask for club cards to confirm your age and also in leaving the club by the stipulated time. If you do not support the club in these matters, you could be putting its very existence in jeopardy.

The Ken Taylor Club Member of the Year Award

When our President of 24 years passed away, it was agreed that in his honour an award should be made every year to the person named “Club Member of the Year.”

This person, male or female, will be a person nominated by the members themselves. The nomination may be on the grounds of achievement at games, assistance in the club in any way, helpfulness to other members, regular attendance at the bar or any other specific grounds a member wishes to nominate another for.

Nomination forms are attached to this newsletter and may be obtained from the door staff or from bar staff.

The Management Committee will judge all nominations. The result will be declared on the evening of the Christmas Draw.

There will be a roll of honour prominently displayed in the club and the winner each year shall win a free main course meal every week for the calendar year following the award.

Please give this award serious thought. We have a lot of members who do a lot for this club and it is fitting that we begin to formally recognise that fact. This award is in memory of a great man who lived his life for this club. Please treat it with the dignity it deserves. Thank you.

Every Sunday Eyes down 8.45 p m

Strawberries and Cream

It’s Summer and it’s Wimbledon so it’s got to be Strawberries and Cream. Come and dine at the club and finish your meal with a dish of strawberries and fresh cream for only £2.50. or just have a portion on its own.

With our wide range of Summer meals including scrumptious salads and wraps and the enormous choice of hot meals for the big appetite, the dainty appetite, the vegetarian appetite and children’s meals this has got to be the place for the family to eat as the school holidays approach. The added bonus to quality food and service is that it will not cost an arm and a leg. Come and look at our menu before you take the plunge!

Ordering times for food are as follows: -

Monday to Thursday 12.00 noon to 2.30 p m and 5.00 p m to 9.00 p m.
Friday 12.00 noon to 2.30 p m and 5.00 p m to 8.00 p m.
Saturday 11.00 a m to 8.00 p m.
Sunday 12.00 noon to 4.30 p m

The only restriction on the menu is that on Sundays we are unable to serve the Breakfasts. This is because, when busy, the variety of items to be cooked can cause big delays for other folk waiting for their meals.

During July we will be revising our menu. Look out for new dishes to titillate the taste buds.

Kingsley Park Youth Games Club

We now have a very active youth games club for members’ children which meets every Saturday between 1 and 4 p.m. in the games room. This is open to children between 8 and 14 years of age. Currently, the children play Pool, Skittles and Darts. It is hoped to extend the range of games to card games in the not too distant future. All the games are played under close supervision of adults who train the children in the treatment of equipment as well as how to play the games. There is currently an inter-club pool league which gives rise to a lot of excitement.

Parents are encouraged to stay in the room while the club is in progress and the bar is open for the duration of the club. In any case the person who brings the child to the club must stay on the premises.

Your children are the club members of tomorrow. Why not give them a taste of what good fun it could be to be a member? Come along and get your children enrolled now, before it gets so full that we have to start a waiting list!

The club is free, but there is a fund-raising football card sold each week.

Dates for the Diary

Saturday July 2nd Kingsley Park Football Team Race Night

This is the fund raising night of the year for our football team. Come along and enjoy the “Sport of Kings” in the comfort of our concert room. The first race is at about 8.30 and a great night is in store for all who join us.

We start at 8.30 with a snack break during the evening.

Saturday 6th August Children’s Outing

Tickets will be available from Friday 1st July. Please remember that only children and grandchildren of members go free. The cost for adults and all other children is £10.00.
Please bring your club cards with you when collecting your tickets. Tickets will not be given to anyone who does not produce their cards. For insurance purposes we will need the first name and surname of every adult and child travelling.

Monday 15th August 60th Anniversary of V J Day

This anniversary will be celebrated in the afternoon when we will be entertained by a Duo with a show called “Hitz from the Blitz.” For those who want it, there will be a bangers and mash lunch for only £2.99. The restaurant will be open all day for those of you who want to eat in the relative quiet of the lounge and want to choose from our extensive menu.

Thursday 10th November Men’s Supper & Games Presentation Evening

This year we are delighted to announce that our after dinner speaker is Tommy “The Doc” Docherty. This man has stories to tell, and he certainly knows how to tell them. The evening will be worth coming to just for him, but there will be much more. We’ll keep you informed as the programme builds.

And Finally

Please do not forget to always bring your club cards with you when you come to the club. The door staff have been instructed to request sight of cards every time a member or associate visits the club with effect from 1st July. Please do not get upset with the doorman for repeated requests; he is only doing what he has been told by the Management Committee to ensure that everyone who enters the club has a right to be here for the safety and comfort of everyone. Please note that as from 1st August it will be compulsory to have your cards on you to gain entry to the Club. Your cooperation and understanding will be greatly appreciated.

August 2005

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News August 2005

It’s Showtime Folks

As you will have seen from a previous newsletter and notices in the club, with effect from 1st August every day will be a potential card show day.

When a doorman is at his post he will be expected to ask for sight of club cards every time a member or associate member comes into the Club.

As has been stated, this is not to catch people out, but to ensure as far as possible, that only people entitled to enter the Club do so. It is for the benefit of those people and their safer enjoyment of the Club’s facilities.

Once card carrying becomes a habit, as it already is for many, we are sure the benefits will be well worth the effort.

Bar Tariff Review 2005

In the February newsletter, it was announced that prices were being held at 2004 rates until the results of the half-year accounts were available.

The reason for holding the prices was to encourage our members and associates to make more use of the Club and its facilities. It was stated that the only way this could be maintained through the year would be for there to be an increase in sales.

The bad news is that there has not been an increase in sales. In fact the turnover has decreased by about 3%. This slight downturn is about half of that currently being experienced in the market as a whole. Add to that over £2300 expenses in registering for the new licensing act, it can be seen that hurdles have to be overcome.

The good news is that with some good fortune and sound management decisions by the Executive Committee there have been some substantial savings in expenses and increases in other income with the end result that there was a small surplus for the first 6 months.

Further new initiatives are in the pipeline, but the one thing that we still need is more and better use of the Club. As we have said many times in this newsletter, this club belongs to the members and the management team is always keen to hear what the members want to bring them into the club more. Please talk to any Committee member or the Secretary.

Decisions about holding prices are never easy. It is accepted practice that margins must be maintained and that is sound practice. Your Committee has taken the brave step of deciding to hold prices for the rest of the year. The success or failure of their decision is dependent upon your support. Only together can this decision be made to work for the good of the Club.

Assistant Steward

It is deeply regretted that the appointment of Andrea Rideout did not work out and Andrea has, by mutual agreement, moved on to pastures new.

The position has now been offered to Sarah Warren who has been working for the Club since August last year. Sarah has a proven record in bar management and has already proven herself a good employee of the club. Good luck in your new and challenging role Sarah.

Local Children in Need Fund Raising

We want to make this year a bumper fundraiser. Our Skittles Marathon always raises good money but only involves less than a dozen members generally. Last year we also had two hardy souls who played darts the day long.

Please book Saturday 22nd October as your day of sponsored activity from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. Let’s see if we can get a full squad for Skittles, Darts, Pool, Snooker, Cribbage and Dominoes.

If you are interested, please tell the General Secretary and get yourself registered.

Sky TV

Once again Sky has increase their tariff this year way ahead of inflation. The monthly cost is going up from £650 to £730.

By good fortune; because Sky do not advertise the fact; we have become aware that we are entitled to a different type of contract if we have an outdoor sports facility within our premises that is included in our rates bill.

By spending about £2500 on building a Petanque Terrain and accepting a small increase in our rates bill of about £200 per year, we have been told by Sky our monthly bill will reduce from £730 to about £200. This should allow us to reinstate the PremPlus subscription for the coming season. This will cost £1750 and still give the Club a substantial saving year on year.

This stroke of good fortune is as a direct result of communicating and meeting with other clubs in our area.

Games News
Ladies Darts

Congratulations to Katrina Birch for winning the Ladies Darts League singles competition.

The team is in need of some new members, preferably ladies who are already club members. It is club policy, however, to open the membership books for people who wish to register as games team members as long as the procedures for obtaining membership are carried out in accordance with Club rules.

Please contact Kathy Maclean at weekends in the Club or any Committee member.

Thank you.

Mixed Darts

We have just joined a mixed darts league. This league plays on Friday nights. We are looking for more players to register for the team. The reward for joining is a good night out every Friday while the league is in session. Come along on a Friday night (making sure the team is at home) and get on the team!

Volunteer Required

We are looking for someone with a strong constitution to be responsible for organising internal competitions in the club covering all the games we play including cards games, snooker, pool, darts, dominoes and petanque. We could also consider chess and board games. The format of these competitions is open to be agreed with the volunteer.

If this is something you would enjoy, please pop in and have a chat with the Secretary.

New Members

At the time of going to press over 60 people who have applied for membership have neither collected their cards or contacted the Secretary to arrange collection. Every one of these people has had a personal written invitation to collect their cards.

The expenses and time involved in introducing new members is well worth spending, but the waste of money and effort on behalf of people who do not collect their cards is, to put it mildly, an annoyance.

It would be appreciated if any member who has proposed or seconded someone for membership could ensure the person they have sponsored has collected their cards or will collect them by Sunday 14th August.

Any applications which are still on file at 1.00 p.m. on Sunday 14th August will lapse unless alternative arrangements for collection of cards has been received beforehand.

Dates for the Diary

Monday 15th August 60th Anniversary of V J Day

In the tradition of the Club we will be supporting this very important anniversary on the day. Come early to get a seat. The entertainment will be in the afternoon with a duo giving a show titled “ Hitz from the Blitz.”

For those who want it there will be a bangers and mash lunch for only £2.99. In addition the restaurant will be open from noon to 9.00 p.m. those who want to eat in the relative quiet of the Ken Taylor Lounge and choose from our extensive menu.

Thursday 10th November Men’s Supper and Games Presentation Evening

Don’t forget to keep this evening free. It will be one to remember. We hope to be able to give a full programme in the next newsletter.

Saturday 18th March 2006 St Patrick’s Day Celebration

Thomas Bodkin, the son of a member of this club, is raising funds to go to India next year and help reconstruct a school for disadvantaged children. He is doing this as a part of the “World Challenge Expedition” through the Northampton School for Boys.

Amongst the activities for the night, he hopes to arrange an Irish Dancing Exhibition by the Clifford Baldry Academy; a Ceili Band; a raffle and possibly some food from genuine Irish recipes.

We are giving plenty of notice as we want to ensure the room is full for the benefit of Thomas in his fund-raising efforts; the school in India and our own members in celebrating St Patrick’s Day knowing they are supporting a great cause and having maximum fun at the
same time.

And Finally

With the children at home from school for the next several weeks, why not give yourselves and them a treat for the occasional lunch time and come in and have a bite to eat. The food is freshly cooked, tastily priced and there is no washing up afterwards. You will all love it. Food is served from Noon to 2.30pm and 5.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday; Noon to 2.30 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. Friday; 11.00 am to 8.00 p.m. Saturday and Noon to 4.30 p.m. Sunday.

September 2005

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News September 2005

The Neighbourhood is Watching

You may have seen the advert in the Chronicle and Echo and the notice on the lamppost outside the Club for 28 days informing the public at large that we are applying for a club premises certificate under the Licensing Act 2003.

The advert is placed so that the public have a chance to complain about any aspect of the application.

A major area of concern in the complaints received is the disturbance caused in the area at the end of the evening.

It is appreciated that there is more than one property dispensing alcohol in the area and that we may not be guilty of all the charges levied against us. However, we are listing below the comments received and urge all to ensure that we are not responsible for any such behaviour in future.

1. Car doors being banged shut rather than carefully closed.
2. Car horns being used to say farewell.
3. People shouting rather than saying “Good night” to each other.
4. People urinating in alleyways.
5. People fighting at the end of the night.

Of course, it is inevitable that there will be a little noise with cars starting as we go home. Also no reasonable person would complain about normal levels of conversation, but the excesses listed above are not acceptable and any one of us having to suffer them would be entitled to be very displeased.

As we have said before, it cannot be proved that all of these complaints can be put at our doorstep. The number of people involved is a very small minority. Your Executive Committee urges everyone to do as the vast majority and show respect and courtesy to our neighbours at all times, especially at the end of the evening when many older folk, children, the sick and the plain tired people who live close only want peace, quiet and a good night’s sleep.

This is as much their right as, ours is to have a good time in the confines of the Club.

Thank You.

Loose Tongues Cost!!

Staff, members and even people totally outside the Club have heard the occasional injudicious statement over recent weeks that would purport to express the view and intended action of the Committee.

The rumour has been spread that the Management wishes to close down the catering operation from Monday to Thursday. This rumour is causing distress to staff and will obviously not please the many members who use the catering facilities during the week in the club.
We can confirm that, whilst all activities in the club are constantly monitored, the Committee has decided upon no such action.

It is a fact that in isolation the catering operation does not make money. It is equally a fact that a direct result of this operation is that the bar turnover has substantially increased against all trends.

The certain result of cutting back the catering operation will be a corresponding cut back in bar sales which will mean a corresponding cut back in money available for such things as the Senior Citizen’s Outing, Children’s Outing and Entertainment and will damage your club.

Your Committee is looking to improve efficiency and grow your Club. It is not so shortsighted as to take one item out of context and take action that would cause irrevocable damage to the Club.

Any action the Committee takes with regard to the Club’s activities will be formally notified either on notice boards or through the newsletter. Anything else can be ignored or you may ask the Secretary or President for confirmation.

Ladies Darts

Congratulations to Kath Maclean and Katrina Birch for winning the Charity Pairs Competition on 11th August this year.

Money raised from this event is donated to local charities as decided at the league AGM.

Kingsley Park Youth Games Club

One of the success stories of the Club this year has been the re-launch of this club for 8 to 17 year olds. Under adult supervision our children are taught Pool, Skittles and Darts. Initially we opened for two hours, but the numbers have increased to the extent that we now open from 1 to 4 p.m. every Saturday.

Children are welcome without charge. The only thing we request is that parents stay in the games room and support their children. The bar is open in the games room for the duration of the club. If not in the games room we must insist a responsible adult is on the premises at all times.

Games Secretaries Youth Pool League

As a part of the club we are now part of an inter-club Pool League. A report compiled by two members of the Club is as follows: -

Monks Park match report

It was the second game of the season for both teams. Monks Park took the lead, but thanks to Daniel Betts he brought the singles to two each. Monks Park then took the lead. Matthew and Daniel Betts put in an outstanding effort to bring the match to 3 all, then James Freeland and Chris Norman won their match and Kingsley won the match 4 legs to 3.

Moulton match report

This was Moulton’s first match and Kingsley’s third, but it was a hard match for Kingsley as it could easily have gone either way. In the singles Daniel Betts stood out with a great game against the opposition. Unfortunately I don’t know the opponent’s name. The doubles all played extremely well so it was hard to decide who was the best, but Moulton did well in the end of it. Kingsley won 7-0.

Chris & Steve

SKY T.V. PREMPLUS SEASON TICKET

Your Committee has listened to your comments about the Club providing this source of entertainment and has now signed up as requested by so many of you who missed seeing the premier games at the Club.

The Management has done it’s bit; now we look forward to the hoards of you who have requested this to support the Club when matches are shown.

Good sport; good drink; good food and good company all under one roof. The roof of Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club. From time to time there may be special promotions on food and drink for some matches. These will be decided at short notice, so you will have to be here to benefit.

Thank You from Judi Slasberg

I would like to thank the Executive Committee for allowing me to hold two Tombolas again this year on the Club forecourt. I would also like to thank the many members who supported by purchasing tickets and making donations.

We raised £180.00 in total, which is going to the Haemophelia Society based at Oxford where many of our local victims of this illness are treated.

Once again, thank you most sincerely.

A report of that hearing will be put on the notice board as soon as the results are known. Your Executive Committee will stress the excellent behaviour of the vast majority of members and associates who use the club and are confident that, if there is any justice in the world, this will carry a lot of weight when our case is considered

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News April 05

Welcome to New Management Committee

The election in March saw all four of the Committee who stood down this year and stood for re-election successful in their bids for reinstatement. Congratulations go to Stu Bee, Geoff Bassett, John Carnegie-Brown and Brian Dolby. Also congratulations go to Dave Birch was returned as Treasurer unopposed. We have one new member on the Committee, John Smith. We wish him well in his endeavours on our behalf.

In welcoming the new Committee, we cannot forget to mention Bill White who decided to retire this year. Bill’s colourful contribution to the Committee will be missed. Our thanks go to him for his service over recent years. Happy retirement Bill!

Kingsley Beer Gets top Marks

For some years we have been registered with Cask Marque. This is an independent organisation that tests real ales that have to reach exacting standards to remain on their prestigious register. They visit without warning and so no special welcoming arrangements can be made.

On 9th March they tested our Greene King IPA and Tetleys Bitter. On both, the temperatures were correct; the appearance was judged brilliant; the aroma was judged appetising and the taste was judged excellent. This is the terminology they use.

Congratulations, Steve, on running a cellar that on this reading can not be bettered! We look forward to seeing that on their next visit it will be equalled!

Club Annual General Meeting

This year’s AGM will be remembered for its record duration of one hour and ten minutes and the personal and vitriolic attack on the Secretary, dire forecasts of the Club going headfirst into oblivion, and the standard of beer in the club.

The path the Secretary has to tread is a lonely one and can never be a popularity contest. Suffice to say, membership does not grow by over 27% and Bar Sales by 26% over a four year period in a declining market without considerable work and input from the Secretary supported of course by the Management Committee. This, when all indicators from around the country show a reverse in fortunes.

For two years we have shown a break-even situation in our accounts. This is not a sign of diving headfirst into oblivion. It is however something to be addressed and the Management Committee is working to improve fortunes for 2005.

It was pointed out by a Trustee that the same people who were complaining about there being no surplus were the people who complained when there was too much surplus. It was stated that the surpluses have been eroded by spending money on the members, as they demanded previously.

One member stated he is sick after every time he has a session of beer drinking in the club. He may be interested in the Cask Marque findings reported above. Perhaps there are other reasons for his discomfort than the quality of our beer.

There were comments about the wage bill. This is admittedly large, but must be taken in the context of the turnover. As a percentage of turnover this club’s payroll is admittedly in the higher levels, but it is not the highest amongst the clubs in the town. We are constantly monitoring staffing levels, but always bear in mind maintaining the level of service our members expect and deserve.

One member stated as a fact that the Secretary and Steward run the club- not the Committee. This is categorically not so. Your Management Committee has control of the running of the Club. Obviously the Steward and Secretary are seen to be in charge on a day to day basis, but they can only act within the confines of the Committee’s direction. This is how it should be; even if on the odd occasion the Secretary and Steward disagree with that direction!

It would have been nice for just one member to attend the meeting and thank the Committee and staff for all the hard work they put in over the year? Even if things did not work out exactly as planned, it is certainly not through lack of effort and hard work. Your Committee and staff work tirelessly to ensure this Club continues to be your chosen place to visit and will continue so to do.

ROLL OF HONOUR

It has been brought to our attention by one of our life members, Mr Richard Shanahan, that whilst we have a roll of honour for those of our members who gave their lives for their country in the First World War, we do not have one for those who served so bravely and gave their lives in the Second World War.

We do not have the records to compile such a roll. If anyone does have any information please write to the Secretary with as much detail as you have about such members.

If the response is positive, we shall make an appropriate commemoration for permanent display in the club.

Is there a draughtsman in the house?

One of the major requirements of the 2003 Licensing Act is that we have a detailed floor plan of the club in the scale 1:100. This plan has to be professionally prepared to very exacting specifications. If there is a qualified draughtsman amongst us who could take the job on, please contact the Secretary. The club would expect to pay a reasonable fee for the job that would be subject to tender.

Dates for the Diary

Tuesdays 5th & 19th April Quiz Nights

It does the heart good to see some new faces and return of old friends as well as our ever faithful regulars. On top of the Quiz and a snack in the evening, Aces High is promising to make a spectacular payout; but will the cards be played right. One thing is for sure, if you are not there it will not be yours! Join us for our 8.30 p.m. start.

Thursday 14th April Race Night

It is a pity that not many people seem to be able to get out on a Thursday night. Until the fever returns we are cutting race nights down to just the one a month. Don’t miss this treat from 8.30pm. It really is a fun night out.

Saturday 23rd April St George’s Day Celebration

Start your day at Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club with a good English Breakfast at 10.00 a.m. Please order you meal before the day for only £2.50. Tickets are available from the Bar Staff.

If you like a beer with your breakfast, the bar will be open. If you prefer a cup of tea, the Urn will be on the boil!

Over the lunch period, early afternoon we will be entertained by Steve Perry with his World War Two Tribute.

About 2.00 p.m. why not enjoy a good English Lunch. This will only set you back £2.99. Again please order your meal before the day from the Bar Staff.

Then round off the evening with Daz “N” Chave. No prizes for guessing what kind of show they put on.

The bar will be open from 10.00 a.m. to midnight. Plenty of time to keep popping in through the day and evening for one of the social highlights of the year.

Wednesday 20th April Pete’s Farewell Fundraising Party

Pete Garafalo, the owner of the Sweet Waters CafĂ©, our next door neighbour, is shortly leaving the country to work voluntarily for “The Village of Hope” children’s home in Morocco for two years.

Many of you will know that Pete is an accomplished musician and he is offering us a night’s entertainment of Rock n Roll and Rhythm & Blues classics.

He will be running a raffle for fund raising and there will be a bucket at the door for any contributions you wish to make.

Pete has always been a good friend to the Club. He put up with our children killing his fish by throwing missiles into his pool, and rubbishing his garden in the same manner with nothing but a very restrained request that the vandalism should stop.

Let us show Pete our gratitude and give him a warm Kingsley farewell by supporting this evening.

Thursday 21st April Ladies Supper

Sorry, all the tickets have been sold. We hope all those fortunate enough to have tickets have a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Wednesday 27th April Opening of the Ken Taylor Lounge

We are delighted to announce that Kevin Smyth, the General Secretary of the CIU will be joining us to officially open the “Ken Taylor Lounge.”

Because of restricted access there will be a small formal party in the Lounge at the beginning of the evening for Ken’s family, friends and colleagues. If you count yourself in this group, please tell Barry Slasberg so that a place can be reserved for you. This will only be for a short formal ceremony from 8.00 p.m.

In the bar Kevin Smyth will once again say a few words at about 9.00 p.m. and anyone else who
knew Ken and would like to say a few words will be welcome so to do. Again, please see Barry Slasberg as soon as possible to ensure that, if you want to speak, you will not miss the opportunity.

There will be entertainment on the night and a free buffet. It is hoped that the breweries will also support the evening supporting beer price reductions.

The best tribute Ken would want would be to see a full club with everyone enjoying themselves. Let us give him the tribute he deserves!

And finally

Our beloved Chancellor was fairly kind to us in his budget, though not as kind as we would have liked. It is with regret that we must increase the cost of all draught beers and lagers by 2 pence a pint, bottled beers except non-alcohol by 2 pence a bottle and wines and fortified wines by 1 penny a small glass and 2 pence a large glass with effect from Friday 1st April. Thank goodness he has left our cider and spirits alone. Every cloud does have a silver lining!

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club May 05

Editorial

Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

The Annual General Meeting at the end of the North Pier at Blackpool was not the most inspirational meeting one could have wished for.

Yet again the accounts showed over one million pounds loss. The silver lining, we are told, is that the motion passed last year and other action taken by the Union will drastically reduce that deficit for the current year. It must be hoped that these cuts will not irreparably damage the effectiveness of the Union in its defence of all clubs.

The pious motions put forward at last year’s meeting resulted in no change within the management structure of the Union. The silver lining seems to be that whilst nothing happened this year this subject is still under review.

The motion put forward by your club never got anywhere near a vote. Apparently the thought of us all sharing in the responsibility of running the Union to the massive sum of £2.00 per person per year is an abhorrence to the vast majority of our clubs. As the spokesman for Kingsley Park, I can only apologise for my total ineffectiveness this time; but assure you that whilst bloodied I am not bowed and will continue to fight for you and the Union. They may knock me down but they will not keep me down.

The motion to allow women to be issued with pass cards and associate cards got a 61% majority but failed as it needed a 2/3rds majority. 686 voted in favour. Just a thought. About 400 clubs have women as General Secretary. If all those clubs sent 3 delegates to the meeting they would have filled the room and got 1200 votes. Over half the clubs in the Union have full women membership. If they had all sent 3 delegates they would have filled the room 3 times over and then add the sympathetic clubs and the potential is a massive majority.

Democracy is about getting up and voting. The apathetic majority handed the result to the active minority on a plate and so there can be no complaint. We were told that there are clubs queuing up to join the CIU but will not while women are treated as they are by us. Instead of losing clubs every year we could be gaining them. It is true that letting women have the pass card will give the Union more money, but more than that, it will open up a great wealth of value in work and experience to every club that embraces the challenge of total equality.

I do not believe that we can wait until the next national AGM to address this matter. In my opinion this has now become a matter of survival for the Union. The question to be answered is “ Do we stick by our ideologies regardless of their relevance in the 21st century or do we opt for survival and regeneration of the CIU in the spirit of our founders?”

If we get our fingers out, and sort our priorities, then perhaps this massive cloud of extinction will have a silver lining and evaporate through the will of the majority. We only have a couple of years to reverse our fortunes, and must start now as wheels grind exceedingly slow in a movement the size of ours.

Your comments are welcome for publication in next month’s newsletter.

THE KEN TAYLOR LOUNGE

On Wednesday 27th April 05 we had the official opening of the Ken Taylor Lounge. We were pleased to see Ken’s family, old friends and committee colleagues at this most important event. Thanks go to those present who shared memories of Ken going back to his teen years, and a special vote of thanks to Kevin Smyth, General Secretary of the CIU, who took time out from his hectic schedule to formally open the lounge.

New Club Bye-Law on age limit for Alcohol Consumption

It has come to the attention of the Committee that people under the age of 18 are having alcoholic drinks obtained by their parents or other adults in contravention of Club Rules.

This is resulting in our staff being abused by young people the worse for drink and other socially unacceptable behaviour.

It is appreciated that in a place where alcohol is served there is always a risk of problems arising. We are proud of our record of good behaviour generally speaking. However, one outbreak of violence is one too many and not to be tolerated.

Your Committee, at its meeting on 28th April, has instituted a by-law with immediate effect as follows: -

“ No person under the age of eighteen years shall be permitted to consume any alcohol under any circumstances whilst on club premises.

Any person under the age of eighteen found consuming alcohol on the premises shall be asked to leave. Persons asked to leave under this by-law may not be considered for membership of the Club on attaining the age of eighteen.

Any member found to be obtaining alcohol for anyone under the age of eighteen shall appear before the Management Committee and, if found guilty of the charge of obtaining alcohol for a person under the permitted age, may be expelled.

Any associate found committing an offence under this by-law may have their rights of Associateship withdrawn.”

This new by-law is for the vast majority of respectable people who use the Club and are entitled to do so in a safe and friendly environment. It is hoped this will be welcomed by all.

Kingsley Park football team

Congratulations to our team for coming top of the first division of the Sunday Alliance Football League. The position was confirmed by a win on Sunday 24th April in a hard fought game. We were winning 1-0 when in the final minutes our goalie saved an almost unstoppable shot to the top of the net. This was swiftly followed by a break by our lads who sealed the game with a final goal making it 2-0. Heart-stopping stuff right to the end with a thoroughly well deserved result.

Good luck next season in the Premier Division!

Congratulations also to the Ladies Darts team which won the 5-a-side knockout and came 4th in the league.

Welfare Section Update

Dave Yates and John Carnegie-Brown are available at the Welfare Table in the bar on Fridays between 7.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m., and Sundays between Noon and 1.00 p.m. to receive Tote, Welfare, Savings Club and Outing payments; to make payments from the Savings Club and to answer any questions

Senior Citizen’s and Life Member’s Day Out

There is just a handful of tickets available for this great day out.
Details are available on notices throughout the Club. If nostalgia turns you on, a steam train ride and a visit to the railway sheds are the highlight of the day.
Treasure Chest

Tickets are available all week from bar staff as well as from the Welfare table when it is manned and Sunday evenings from 7.00 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. when the draw is made.

The rules and details of the magnificent prizes that could be won can be seen on posters around the Club. With just £100 if your number comes up and your chosen key does not open the treasure chest and prizes starting at £500 for opening the chest and increasing at £50 per week until won, the potential for a really good scoop is enormous!

Savings Club

Join this club and save for your holiday; for Christmas, any special event or just a rainy day. It’s simple and flexible. If the money is in your account it is available in full or part with just one week’s notice.

Again the rules are on the notice board, and will be simply explained by David or John when at the Welfare Table.

The Tote

Pick a pair of numbers and if they come up on the weekly draw on Sunday at 1.00 p.m. you will share the pot of £150.00 with however many other Members and Associates have chosen the same numbers. £1.00 will buy you 20 pairs of numbers and give you two extra pairs free of charge.

Dates for the Diary

Tuesdays 3rd 17th 31st May Quiz Nights

The subtle variation in the kind of questions is proving quite interesting, the food is proving quite enjoyable and the Aces High with the next prize being well over £300 is quite exciting.

So for quite a night out, why not join us at 8.30 p.m. in the concert room for three times this month?

Sunday 8th May VE Day Celebration

In the bar at lunchtime we have The Jimmy Graham Band. This band has visited us before and been very well received. Real music with real musicians will evoke memories of times gone by and be a real treat for those of us too young to remember the days of the war.

In the bar in the evening we have “The 1940’s Roadshow.” This is a new act for us, but if reputation is anything to go by, we are in for a real treat.

This is a day of remembrance and celebration and this is the place to be!

Thursday 12th May Race Night

Just one race night this month. A single jewel in the crown of mid-week fun and entertainment. Again we start at 8.30 p.m. and go with an adrenaline rush through the evening. Miss it and you do most definitely miss out.

Doorkeeper Vacancy

We have an immediate vacancy for a doorkeeper for the weekend period and occasional weekday shifts and holiday cover. Free transport home at night is included in the package. Please contact the Secretary for further details.

Mini Bus

The club mini-bus is available for the use of our members as a service at very reasonable rates. Booking is by a form obtainable either from the Steward or Secretary and is subject to approval by the Committee. Please note that at least two weeks notice is required for the booking; the booking must be made by a member who must be part of the travelling party, and a list of passengers must be completed when the booking form is submitted.

Whilst every endeavour will be made to ensure all accepted bookings are honoured, the Club accepts no liability if this does not happen and will give maximum notice possible in such cases.

And finally

We would like to welcome Andrea Rideout who has joined our staff team as Steve Barker’s assistant. She has now been with us for almost one month – probably seems much longer to her!
Good luck in your new job Andrea and may your stay with us be long and happy.

June 2005

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News June 05

The Licensing Act 2003

In previous newsletters, reference has been made to the Licensing Act 2003. This is the most comprehensive change in the law affecting Working Men’s Clubs since goodness knows when.

The main change is the control of licensing matters is being taken away from the Magistrates Court and given over to Local Authorities. The reason for this is to allow the Courts to concentrate on criminal matters.

As far as the club is concerned, there is a lot of costly work to be done in the run-up to registration under the new regime and the ongoing cost of annual registration goes up from £3.20 to £295.00.

The club will also have to advertise its application of the Club Premises Certificate in the local newspaper and outside the club.

The changes in the law that affect the Club most are those that relate to children. The main change is that, with a few exceptions, no one under the age of eighteen is allowed to consume alcohol on the premises. Under current law children from the age of six may drink alcohol and those under six may drink alcohol if they can provide a doctor’s certificate.

Our recently introduced by-law will is slightly more restrictive than the Act, but it is the spirit of the Act and your Management believes should stand in light of recent events in the Club. Our bylaw is in force now which states that under no circumstances may anyone under the age of eighteen consume alcohol on the premises.

Also, it becomes illegal for anyone under the age of fourteen to enter the club premises except with an adult under whose close supervision they must be at all times in areas where alcohol is served.

Under the Act there will be a time set at the end of each day when the premises must be totally vacated.

Apart from this it is very much business as usual when the law takes hold which should be in early November this year.

However, not everything is yet finalised. There may be further changes by that date of which we will endeavour to keep you fully informed.

Always have your Club Cards with you!

With getting on for 3000 members, it becomes ever more important that we correctly monitor that only people entitled under the law enter the club.

Your Management Committee has decided that every person who enters the club for social purposes must show their club cards where applicable.

With effect from 1st July 2005, the doorkeepers have been instructed to inspect the cards of every person, no matter how regularly they may come to the club. In order to allow time for members to get into the habit of bringing their cards, entry of known members will be allowed without cards through the month of July. However, from 1st August the ruling will be enforced that no one shall be allowed into the club without their cards.

It is hoped that Members will appreciate that this is not a jobsworth exercise, but an exercise to ensure that the status of being a private club will be more thoroughly upheld.

Welfare Section Update

Senior Citizens and Life Members Day Out

Once again this event is a total sell-out. Please don’t be late as there is a lot to pack in the day, none of which anyone will want to miss!

Treasure Chest

Tickets are on sale at the Welfare Table in the bar on Fridays 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. and Sundays Noon to 1.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. when the draw takes place. At all other times, tickets are available from the main bar. Details of the prizes and number of keys are displayed on notice boards. The minimum prize for opening the box is £500 rising by £50 per week into infinity until the chest is opened, when it reverts to £500 and starts the climb again. If the key is won but does not open the chest, a consolation prize of £100 is given.

Savings Club

Any Member or Associate Member may join the savings club.

This is a simple way to put money aside, either by regular payments; one-off payments or any way you want payment subject to certain upper limits.

Subject to one week’s notice any or all of the savings may be withdrawn at the savers pleasure.

Withdrawals over £100 are paid by cheque which, by special agreement, may be cashed by Allied Irish Bank in St Edmund’s Rd, Northampton.

The Welfare Section

Any male member who has been a financial member of this Club for 12 months may join the welfare section. The current subscription is £4.00.

Sickness benefits available are £15 per week for up to 8 weeks of certified time off work in any 12-month period subject limitations for long-term or recurrent illness. This benefit becomes available after 12 month’s membership of the section.

Senior Citizen’s payout is £15 per quarter payable to all members over 65 who have been members of the section for at least 5 years. The next payout to qualifying members is due from 5th June 2005.

The Tote

The Tote is a game of chance open to all Members and Associates who choose a pair of numbers between 1 and 30. If a pair matches the two numbers that are drawn by the Welfare Secretary each Sunday at 1.00 p.m. the members shares prize money of £150 with any other member who has chosen the same number. There is the option to spend a pound for 20 pairs of numbers. Take this option up and you get an extra two pairs of number free!

The Rules

Details of the rules for the treasure chest, the savings club, the welfare section and the tote can be obtained from Dave Yates and John Carnegie-Brown at the Welfare Table Friday evenings and Sunday lunch times and evenings.

New Members

At the time of going to press there are 62 applicants who have been written to inviting them to collect their cards who have not been to collect them.

It would be appreciated if those who have not collected their cards make every effort to collect them as soon as possible.

Contrary to information that appears to be going around the club we are able to confirm that applications for membership will be accepted and are most welcome up until 30th June.

Games News

Well done to our snooker “A” team who came top of the Second Division this season and are promoted to the first division next season. A special mention must be made of Steve Canham for scoring the highest break of 51.

November 10th Men’s Supper and Games Presentation Evening

Last year’s evening failed for lack of notice. This must-go-to event is open to all male members on a first come first served basis. There will be a sports personality as an after-dinner speaker and comedy and music will be on the menu as well as a mouth-watering meal.

Details will be announced nearer the date with the dates and times tickets will be available. Book this date to support the games sections and enjoy an excellent night out!

And Finally

You will notice that there is no race night this month. As fewer people are coming along to these, we thought a break until the autumn would be in order. They will be back!

A member has had to cancel a concert room booking on 30th July. Although short notice, this date is available if you have a celebration you would like at the club. This offer is to members only. Please write to the Secretary or pop in and see him if you want the room.
