Please try to pay by 29th January. Do not forget if you do not pay by 25th February your membership will be forfeited and none of us wants that!

Budget price increase

Until last year it has always been the custom to increase bar prices in January each year to account for increases in wages, administration and property management expenses. Your Management Committee has decided to defer this increase until the Brewery annual increases which are normally imposed upon us about March.

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour?

Apparently the answer for some of you is a resounding yes. If it does please do not grind it into the club carpets or stick it on club furniture. Put it in a bin or ashtray when you finish with it. To grind it into the carpets shortens the life of the carpet drastically and the only way to pay for replacement carpets is to increase the price of refreshments.

Disabled facilities

We are pleased to announce that we have acquired two new wheelchairs. If you need the use of one to get around the Club please ask the bar staff. Unfortunately we are not able to let these out of the club premises other than to collect folk from or take them back to their transport outside the Club doors.

Annual General Meeting

Keep an eye on the notice board in the bar for notice of the 2002 Annual General Meeting to be held towards the end of February. This is open to male members only and it is hoped that we will have a good attendance.

Subscriptions

If your subscription has not been paid by 29th January, you become a member in arrears. According to Club rules you are not entitled to use Club facilities until your subscription has been paid, and if not paid by 25th February you will cease to be a member.

There are just seven sessions left for you to pay

Fridays 1st 8th 15th and 22nd February from 8 pm to 9 pm
Sundays 3rd 10th and 17th February from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm

So come on in and get paid up. You know it makes sense!

Card Show

As all subs should have been paid by 28th January, there will be a card show from 29th January through to the end of February. It must be stressed that this is a card show and there is no restriction on the legitimate entry for Associates or guests.

The only restriction is that no one will be allowed entry unless they show their current cards if they should be in possession of cards.

Do not forget subs will only be taken Fridays and Sundays.

Elections

In accordance with Club rules, the President, Vice President and five Committee members retire after the Annual General Meeting. Elections will be held on the weekend after the A.G.M. for these posts. Those retiring are eligible for re-election and any male member who has been a financial member for at least six months prior to nominations closing is eligible to stand for election if proposed and seconded by two male financial members.

If you feel you can make a positive contribution to the running of your Club and are prepared to commit your time and energy in its service, why not stand?

Games news

All games sections are now coming to the end of their season in the CIU leagues. The Air-gun finished runners-up once again to Spencer WMC. The skittles section has two games remaining and look like coming third to Spencer and Northampton B at best. Neither crib teams are in the running for places, but the B team has had a better time of it than the A team this season. The pool section has finished in the Town League Pool in the coveted runners-up spot.

Congratulations to all members who are taking part in club games, no matter where you may finish. We hope you all enjoy playing. You are certainly keeping alive a vital part of the spirit of the CIU and this club by your participation.

New members are always welcome to play any of the games in the section. If you are interested please contact Peter Kirby, the games section secretary.

Subscriptions

As stated in the last newsletter anyone who has not paid their subscriptions by 25th February is no longer a member of the club. The E.C. has ruled that re-entry may not be applied for until 2003.

You were warned!

Club cards

It is enshrined in our rules that members and associates should always be in possession of their club cards when on club premises. The authorities (that is the police and courts) are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of unauthorised people attending private members clubs.

Please ensure you always have your cards on you. If the doormen do not know you personally they will ask to see your cards and refuse entry if you do not have them.

Price increases

As expected and stated in the January newsletter, the Breweries have reviewed their prices as from 4th March. We must thank both Bass and Carlsberg for their positive contribution in minimising the increase. The result is that our review this year, including the increase for our internal budget, is roughly in line with inflation. The draught beer increases, which will take effect from Friday 8th March are as follows: -

Carling, Carlsberg, Carlsberg Export & Draught Burton Ale all increase by 5p per pint.

Worthington, Allbright, Brew XI, Tetleys & Guinness increase by 4p per pint.

Caffreys is to be introduced as an additional bitter shortly at £1.91 per pint. This is a re-launched product that is both weaker and cheaper than the Caffreys of old.

Negotiations are still in progress concerning spirits and packaged products. A separate notice will be issued when these are concluded.

Opening hours

At the AGM a notice of motion was passed that the Management consider opening the bar all day Mondays and Fridays. After careful consideration it was decided that the opening hours remain unaltered.

Age limit for use of Snooker room

Also at the AGM a notice of motion was passed that the Management consider allowing 13 to 15 year old children to use the snooker room. Again after careful consideration it was agreed that this should be allowed under very strict conditions. First, they may only play with their parents. Second, they may only play on the middle table. Third, they should be tall enough to be able to cue correctly. Fourth, they have no right of access on match nights.

If children are in the room without their parents, and if when playing they are not playing with their parents, their parents will be subject to disciplinary procedures.

And Finally

Congratulations to Ken Taylor who is returned as President and Mick Shaw returned as Vice-President, both un-opposed, for a further two years.

The results of the election of the five Committee men will be posted in the Club when declared by the scrutineers.
