January 2003

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News January 2003

Happy New Year!

It is that time of year again. At the start of the new year, what does the media promise us? It promises and talks up the threat of war. It promises and talks up the threat of international terrorism. It promises and talks up the threat of looming recession and the crash of the housing market. Has anybody seen anything good and decent that the media is promising? Of course not – it doesn’t make good news!

The management of Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club makes no predictions as to what is going to happen in the world at large. What it does is make a firm commitment to provide for members; their families and guests; and associate members a safe haven from whatever the world may throw at us. It is committed to continue serving the community through the Charity and Children in need funds. It is committed to continue providing refreshments; both food and drink; at the lowest possible price to be able to continue raising funds to plough back into the club for the benefit of all those who use it. It is committed to supporting the playing of games in the club.

In short, it is committed to fulfilling its first rule which is “ to afford to its members the means of social intercourse, mutual helpfulness, mental and moral improvement, and rational recreation.”

It may not get it right every time, but it is committed to keep trying all the time.

Again, it must be stressed that success or failure depends to a large degree on those who use the club. We need parents to supervise their children at all times. Almost every week the ladies toilets are vandalised. Do parents need to be told that if their children spend hours each night in the toilet, they are not using it for its correct purpose? Many of the people who use the club have their evenings spoiled by children running free and causing a nuisance. A small minority still roam the club as if it were an adventure playground. It is inevitable that one day one of those children will be badly hurt. People are still grinding chewing gum into the new carpet in the bar and mishandling the furniture.

The commitment of management will not be realised if it is not backed by the commitment of those who use the club to use it with respect and to be considerate of others using the club.

May we all enjoy a happy, harmonious and healthy new year and see our club go from strength to strength!

5th April – Dinner/Cabaret

Those of you who have already seen the Detroit Runners will know you are in for a special evening if you come to this event. Night and Day also a fine group to entertain us. Add to this a three course meal and we have a recipe for a really good night out.

Lessons were learnt from our last event. We will have a seating plan at the outset and you will be able to choose your table from those available when you book.

The doors will open at 7.00pm and the meal served at 7.30pm prompt.

Tickets are £10 each available only from the Entertainment Committee.

Treasure Chest 2002

Over 2002 the Treasure Chest has generated some very nice prize money and funds for the Club.

Your Management Committee has allocated the surplus over the year, and a summary of the distribution as it will appear in the 2002 accounts is as follows

St Patrick’s Dance £1447
December drink discount £3800
Entertainment subsidy £5000
Senior Citizen’s Meal £1000

Total £11247

The total prize payout in the year was £5150.

Thanks must go to the Entertainment Committee for introducing the very popular feature to our weekends’ entertainment.

Elections 2003

On 7th February, the notice for elections for the Management Committee will be posted on the notice board in the main bar.

All those retiring will be eligible for re-election. If you can spare the time and think you can make a positive contribution to the running of your club why not stand for election?

Any member who wishes to be nominated must have been a financial member for at least six months prior to nominations closing and must be proposed and seconded by two financial members.

Nominations close 24 hours after the Annual General Meeting.

If you want more information before deciding to go for election, please see the General Secretary.

Enjoy a game of cards?

It has come to the notice of the editor that some members who enjoy a sociable game of cards in the club are confused about any restrictions in playing times.

So there is no misunderstanding, the regulations are as follows: -

There is no restriction to playing cards in the card room as long as there are no club matches on. The same applies to the games room when it is open.

No card playing is allowed in the lounge.

In the bar, the only restrictions are: -

Fridays All card playing to stop by 8.00pm
Saturdays All card playing to stop by 8.00pm
Sundays No card playing allowed before 1.30pm or after 8.00pm

Should there be entertainment at any other time in the bar, card playing is not allowed.

All games must stop 20 minutes after the final bell in any session.

Members should be aware that, under our by law 6, no gambling is allowed in the club. It is appreciated that a small stake adds a bit of spice to a game and this is allowed. Gambling, where the purpose of the game is to win money rather than enjoy the game, is not allowed.

By law 7 states that there shall be no obscene language in the club. It has come to the attention of the Management Committee that members and associates who used to enjoy the club on a weekend evening go elsewhere because of the obscene language that is often freely and loudly used by some card players. Consideration of others in the Club would be appreciated. If not given voluntarily, it will be enforced by disciplinary action.

It is hoped this has clarified the situation.

Committee

It was with great regret that the Committee accepted the retirement of Mr John O’Brien due to ill health. A debt of gratitude is owed to John for his support over the years. Best wishes go to John in his retirement for improved health and the continued ability to use his drinking arm for many years to come.

The Committee recently welcomed Dave Yates as a co-opted member to serve until the elections of 2004. He can already be seen at the Welfare table as he is taking over the role of Welfare Secretary.

Thanks go to Mr G Bassett and Mr J Boyle who volunteered to fill the vacancy.

Doorkeeper

With Dave Yates coming on to the Committee we are left with a vacancy for a doorkeeper. If you available for a few shifts a week please see the General Secretary for details.

And finally

It is anticipated that the Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held on Sunday 23rd February. The formal notice will be posted in the bar the weekend before.

Last year approximately 1.7% of our members attended including the Management Committee.

It would be good if we could raise that to 17% and fill the room. Hope to see you there!

March 2003

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News March 2003

Annual General Meeting

The date: Tuesday 11th March 2003

The time: 7.00pm to 9.00pm

The reason: They want to meet the folk from Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club and challenge us to an evening of competition at our games of Snooker, Pool, Skittles, Darts, Cribbage and Dominoes.

The evening: The whole squad; about 42 in total; including the top notch internationals are planning to visit us. They are restricted to two hours only because of their arduous training for important matches that lie ahead. They will not only be playing us in competition but will be wandering around chatting; signing autographs; and possibly posing for souvenir photos with you if you ask them nicely and bring a camera. You may even find yourself having a pint pulled for you by one of our local heroes.

Who is playing for us?

Please give Pete Kirby or Barry Slasberg a note of your name, club number and which game you wish to play. Pete will try to arrange for as many who wish to play to get a game. No promises though because we will only have an hour and a half to fit in all games. If you turn up on the night hoping to play you may just be lucky.

Entry: Security on the door will be strict for this evening, as it must be stressed that this is not open to the public. Only Members, their bona fide guests and associates may join us. So please bring your club cards with you.

Acknowledgements:

Thanks must go to Carlsberg Tetley who have arranged this visit for us.

Thanks also to the snooker section for re-arranging their league matches to accommodate the evening.

Annual General Meeting

We had a total of thirty-one members; including the Management Committee; out of a potential 2104 attended our A.G.M. on 23rd February.

There was an interesting question and answer session on the accounts for 2002, with some very relevant questions from the floor. Once answered the accounts were accepted by the meeting without dissent.

It was agreed that the subscriptions for 2004 be adjusted as follows: -
Men to £4.50
Life Members to £2.00
Senior Citizens to £4.00
Ladies to £1.50

Even with these increases this club has one of the lowest subscription rates in town.

It was also agreed that the purchase of a pass card would, in future, be compulsory for all male members. This was as a statement of support for the CIU on which all clubs depend if we are to maintain our special position in our communities.

Saturday 15th March we are celebrating St Patrick’s Day with a dance in the concert room in the evening.

Music will be supplied by Seamus Moore and the J.C.B. Band and there will be a display of Irish dancing.

Tickets are £6.00 available from the Entertainment Committee or from the bar.

There will be an extension on the bar until midnight.

Shirley Bassey Tribute Night

Friday 28th March for one night only at Kinglsey Park Working Men’s Club, Joanne Copeman is Shirley Bassey.

If this lady is as good as we are told, then this is definitely a night not to be missed.

Joanne is backed by Trivis Logan, a top vocal entertainer.

Dates for the Diary

13th March Race night

We apologise for having to cancel the last race night at short notice and hope no one was inconvenienced. We have brought forward the next night just in case anyone is suffering from withdrawal symptoms! The first race will be at 8.30pm. Be there – be lucky.

25th March Quiz Night

Because of the Saint’s visit there will only be one quiz night this month. We start at approximately 8.30pm prompt. You miss it, you miss out!

5th April Dinner/Cabaret

Tickets are going very well for our first Dinner/Cabaret of the year, but there are still some left.

Having fed well on our three-course meal you will be able to sit back and enjoy the fabulous Detroit Runners with their captivating song and dance act, and the comedy act Night & Day.

Tickets at £10 each are available from the Entertainment Committee only.

17th April Charity Night in aid of The Weston Favell Ulcer Clinic

One of our members, Fred Knock, has recently been helped through an extremely bad period of severe ulceration on his legs. The staff at the clinic saved one leg from possible amputation. As with most NHS establishments this is under-funded. Fred has arranged an evening of entertainment (supplied free by the entertainers) with a prize draw to raise money for the clinic. A £2.00 donation will be collected at the door. This promises to be a good evening for an excellent cause.

23rd April St George’s Day

As is our custom, we will be celebrating St George’s day on the actual day itself

We will start the day at 11.00am with a good old-fashioned English breakfast for just £2.10.00d. in English money.

For lunch there will be a choice of Bangers & Mash with Gravy or Faggots & Mash with Gravy, at a cost of £3.00.00d in English money.

So that everyone gets the meal they want, tickets for the meals will be sold from behind the bar from 1st April until lunchtime 17th April.

The lunchtime entertainment will be the Girl Group Ttorria. They will do three spots, the middle one of which will be devoted to the traditional English songs. The other two spots will be from their standard repertoire – and they are very good!

The evening will carry on the theme, but for a change we would ask you what you want to do. Please see Graham, our Steward, or the Secretary if you have any ideas as soon as possible.

26th April Ladies Supper

Our annual feast of food and entertainment for our lady members is to be held on the last Saturday in April.

We start the evening at 7.30 prompt with a three-course meal followed by three acts that should make for a very enjoyable evening: -

Just Friends are a comedy Drag Act
Swordfish is a Male Duo
Double Impact is a Male Dancer (Probably not Waltz, Quickstep or Fox Trot.)

Tickets at £7.00 each will be available from the Entertainment Committee only from 21st March at the times displayed on the posters.

Games News

Pool Congratulations to our pool team for winning the C.I.U. league. We know we are the best; but it is great when the results reflect this!

Airgun Congratulations to S. Griffiths and M. Bodsworth who won the Town League pairs knockout competition. Quality shooting again!

Skittles We welcome a second ladies skittle team to our club for the beginning of this season. The team that used to play for the County Tavern has joined us. Definitely their loss and our gain. Welcome and good fortune for the coming season.

Snooker Last year, we reduced the age limits for playing snooker to 13 as long as the children were playing with parents. Once again a small number of parents are letting the side down by getting the snooker balls and leaving the children to play unsupervised. Some of these children are also not observing the rules as to playing times and are hogging the tables so that folk cannot get a game. The rules are displayed in the snooker room as to time allowed when people are waiting.

Please note that if anyone under 16 is playing snooker without at least one parent in attendance, they will be liable to being stopped playing without notice and the parent will be liable to disciplinary action. Also if tokens for more than the permitted time are put in the meter when someone books the table, the excess time will be forfeited and there will be no refund.

The management wish to encourage young players for the future. Part of the game is respect for other players, just as much as potting the balls!

And finally
Tariff Review

The Management Committee never consider entering popularity contests at this time of year. No matter how hard management tries to keep price increases to a minimum, and no matter what the level of increase some people will be unhappy.

This year, as in previous years, our suppliers have been bent over backwards to minimise their increases. The additional price for our own budget has been kept to a minimum in order to maintain the standards the members have a right to demand of the club.

There should be no further increases in beer this year, unless the Chancellor increases duty; and wine and spirit prices will only be increased if the prices to the Club are increased, and again if there is any duty increase.

A warning note must be sounded for the future. If you look around your newly refurbished bar, you will see increasing numbers of chairs damaged with cigarette burns; you will see tables with cigarette burns on the sides where folk rest their cigarettes on the tables and you will see carpet getting damaged by chewing gum.

Please use the ashtrays provided on every table. Please do not place ashtrays on chair seats where cigarettes can roll off and burn the fabric. Please wrap up your used chewing gum and put it in a waste bin. If these thoughtless abuses of your club continue there will be no option but that the cost of repair will have to be recovered through price increases over the bar.

Bar Refurbishment

At the time of going to press the contract is going according to plan. All the work in the seating area should be finished well in time for our official opening on the evening of Friday 25th October.

Keep an eye on the notice boards for the date when the bar will be open during the week again. We cannot fix the date yet as when the contractors go we will still need time to sort some of the furnishings and carpets.

We sincerely hope that no one has been too greatly inconvenienced by the work.

Friday 25th Wals Jazzers Band Traditional Jazz
Saturday 26th Cover Up Band 50’s – 80’s
Sunday 27th Rusty Ford & the Classics 60’s Rock n Roll

As usual bingo will be played every Friday evening (Eyes down 9.00pm) and every Sunday evening (Eyes down 8.45pm) and Saturday 12th (Eyes down 9.00pm)

Bingo Survey

We only had to do the survey for one week to realise that almost every Saturday night player would rather play a restricted number of Saturdays than play every week on a weekday.

This wish will be honoured and with the possibility of the occasional exception; such as October; every endeavour will be made to ensure that no more than two Saturdays a month will be cut from the bingo programme.

Race Night

Our first race night got off to a nice steady trot. It was a fun night out for those who took part. We are sure that we will soon be going at a gallop with regular monthly evenings.

The next race night will be Thursday 17th October starting at 8.30pm.

Quiz Night

With the nights drawing in and the barbeque season almost at an end, we thought it would be nice to offer two quiz nights each month instead of the customary one.

So for October we will try Tuesdays 15th and 29th. If enough come we will try to keep it going through the winter months at two a month.

Dinner/ Cabaret 19th October

Tickets at £10 are going a lot better than for our last dinner/cabaret evening but there are still some left. This is an excellent night out and excellent value for money.

Where else would you get a three-course meal and a full cabaret for £10?

Just a cautionary note. If you are thinking you will be able to skip the meal and see the cabaret for free as some did last time: you will not be in luck. Only ticket holders will be permitted entrance this time.

Games News

We have news this month of two teams which give cause for great joy and pride: -

Ladies skittles finished third and have gained promotion this year. This is good news in itself, but when you consider that only last season they finished bottom, the achievement is all the more newsworthy. Well done ladies!

The outdoor bowls once again showed the stuff they are made of by winning the CIU team knock-out competition for the second time in three years. Long may they keep up the excellent work.

The winter seasons have now started or are about to start for Men’s skittles, Airgun, Cribbage, 25’s and Snooker.

All games sections welcome new players at any time. If you are interested please see Pete Kirby who is our Games Section Secretary.
Beer Festival

Plans are gathering momentum for the beer festival to be held Friday 25th October to Sunday 27th October.

As last year there will be five guest bitters from small independent brewers around the country, with varying strengths to cater for varying pallets and appetites. There will also be two rather nice guest ciders on offer together with our usual fare.

On the evening of 25th October, Kevin Smyth; General Secretary of the CIU; will be joining us to formally open the refurbished bar and the festival.

The entertainment will include a Jazz band on the Friday and Rusty Ford & the Classics on Sunday.

Dining at the Club

Since last month, things have been changing apace. The new improved standard menu is now in place. In addition we are now serving an excellent all-day breakfast. On Mondays to Thursdays inclusive we have a mind-blowing offer of two meals for £5 for selected meals.

So you can come to Kingsley and have lunchtime meals for the price of lunchtime snacks and indeed evening meals for the price of evening snacks. Is that good news or is it?

Date for the diary

Thursday 21st November is sports supper night. The guest speaker will be Norman Hunter; footballer of Leeds and England fame. There will also be a comedian and musical entertainment details of which will be announced later. Tickets will cost £10, worth every penny, and we want the room to be full.

And finally

By the middle of October a lot of your money will have been spent on refurbishing the bar. Please treat it as you would your home. Wrap your spent chewing gum in paper and put it in a bin rather than stamp it into the carpet, and use an ashtray for your cigarette ash and to stub out cigarettes. A little thought and hardly any effort can make a lot of difference. Thank you.

November 2002

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News November 02

October – That was the month that was!

Bar refurbishment

The project that most of us were affected by for most of the month was the bar refurbishment. At time of going to press the formal opening has been celebrated, nearly all the work has been finished, and the bar is back in full use.

It certainly looks different and; while most people say how nice it is; we know it is not to everyone’s taste. We hope that in time it will grow on you and everyone will feel comfortable and relaxed in the new surroundings.

Some animals, and we use the word advisedly, have already set to trying to spoil the room by grinding chewing gum into the carpet and burning the carpet with cigarettes.

If you see anyone doing this please report it directly to the secretary. Immediate and firm action will be taken against the perpetrators. This is the members’ club and the members have paid good money for the work done. Do not let it be wasted!

Dinner/ Cabaret

In October we had our second dinner/cabaret. As we try new things we have to learn from our mistakes and carry on, hopefully improving every time.

Unfortunately, things went sadly amiss with the setting up of the evening. Sincere apologies go to those who were discomforted by events.

On the up side, the entertainment was first class and we hope that more than compensated at the end of the night.

Do not be put off from coming to the next one; if only to find out how much things will have improved.

One excellent result from the evening was that the raffle raised £187 to buy equipment for the Geriatric ward of Northampton General Hospital. Our thanks go to IOS Lighting and Blindin’ Lights; both on the terrace and both suppliers for the refurbishment; who donated excellent prizes for the raffle.

Ladies Games

On the 26th Kingsley hosted the presentation night for the Bass ladies skittles league. Last month we reported the team’s promotion. This month we can report that one of our ladies was proclaimed both Player of the Year and Player of Players. This is a fantastic achievement and congratulations go to Maggie Reid.

We also have a star in our ladies darts team. Rita Dolby was runner up in the individual’s competition in the Town Darts League. Well done Rita!

Beer Festival

At the time of going to print the second annual beer festival is in full flight. The quality of the festival beers remains as good as ever, and the entertainment has certainly moved up a notch or two. Thanks go to Steve Barker as the inspiration of the festival, the guardian of the ale and the namesake of Barker’s Bite - a very enjoyable pint. Also thanks go to Frog Island Brewery who sourced the festival beers, and brewed Barker’s Bite for us.

And finally

Once again we would like to thank you for your patience through the recent upheavals in the bar and wish you every pleasure in its use for the future. Games News

This month we only have two types of news; good and excellent.

The first item of good news: -

Our men’s skittles team had a glimpse of glory when they recently beat Queen’s Park WMC and went to the top of division one. Unfortunately, their defeat by United Trade the following week meant they dropped to second. With all the upheavals in the team this season, and a fresh faced new captain, this can only be seen as a monumentally successful season. Well done lads!

The second item of good news: -

Our air-gun team continue to chase that illusive first spot in the league. Spencer continue to dominate the league and they have beaten us twice this season which means we look to finish second. Keep up the good work. Our day will come!

And finally the excellent news: -

It was a cliff-hanger but, by winning their final match of the season, our Pool team has won the Northampton Pool League. We are the champions! Absolutely brilliant lads. Well done.

Wage Review

Once again our beloved politicians have stuck their oar in our business by increasing the minimum wage rate as from 1st October this year. Historically reviews in Working Men’s Clubs have been effective from the middle of January. Once again we have been obliged to review wages two and a half months earlier than usual.

Whilst this does have an immediate and substantial impact on the Club overhead, the Management Committee has decided to wait until next year’s brewery round of price increases to increase the bar tariff.

So that all may be fully aware this year, annual subscriptions for all members should be paid by 28th January 2003.

The subscription rates remain as last year: -

Wednesday 29th 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm

If subscriptions have not been paid by this date, members become members in arrears and are not able to use the Club facilities. They do however have a further 28 days in which to pay their subscription after which they cease to be members of the Club.

To help jog memories there will be a card show from 29th January 2003 to 28th February 2003 inclusive. During this period the cards of every person entering the Club every time will be checked. No 2003 pass card will mean no entry. Bona fide guests and associate members with 2003 pass cards will be welcome.

There will be restricted times in February to pay Subs which will be on the notice board. If you turn up prepared to pay subs at the wrong time entry will be refused.

All this warning is bound to mean nobody will be upset, isn’t it !?

And finally

The Management Committee would like to wish all members, associates and guests who have used the Club over the year, a very happy Christmas and a happy healthy and prosperous New Year.

SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN

During June we had the unfortunate experience of finding children hanging the wrong side of the stair rail in the card room, unsupervised by their parents.

The Committee; ever aware of its responsibility; has charged those parents who could be identified. The reason the charges were raised was out of an absolute commitment to ensure this club should not experience one serious injury or fatality.

It is a true saying that kids will be kids. Many young people do not understand the danger of their actions and cannot therefore be held responsible.

It is equally true that parents must be parents and take responsibility for their children’s actions.

Those parents charged have been reprimanded and warned of severe consequences should there be a recurrence.

For the sake of the safety of your children the Committee wishes to make it crystal clear that, whilst it appreciates the majority of parents do properly supervise their children, this warning is applied to all parents forthwith.

Bar refurbishment

Your Committee is pleased to announce that we are imminently starting a refurbishment of the main bar.

The main features will be an improved lighting system, new wall linings, improved seating and new floor covering. There will be no major structural alterations.

It is anticipated that the contract will take about seven weeks to get to practical completion.

In that time the bar will be closed from lunchtime Monday to lunchtime Friday inclusive.

The lounge and concert room will offer comfortable and, we hope, congenial accommodation. The bar will be open from Friday evening to Sunday evening inclusive throughout the contract. It will always be clean and safe, but not necessarily quite up to the standards you have been used to.

We apologise for any inconvenience and assure you it will be kept to a minimum.

If you want an idea of what is being done please ask the Secretary.

Let us see how long the carpet can remain free of chewing gum and cigarette burns!

New Members

The final list of applicants this year for membership will be posted on the notice board in the first week of July.

It will be on the board for one week. Then the Committee will consider it. Invitations to collect cards will be posted on the notice board the following week.

Proposers and seconders please keep an eye on the notice board to inform those you nominated when they may collect their cards.

Quiz Night

The next of our celebrated quiz nights will be held on Tuesday 30th July at 8.30pm. It’s friendly, it’s fun and with that edge of competition it can be just a bit exciting. Come join us for a good evening out during the week.

Children’s Outing

This year the children’s outing is to Skegness on Saturday 10th August.

For children up to 14 years old there is no charge: indeed they will have a bottle of pop and some crisps thrown in to keep them happy on the journey.

For adults the fee is £8.00.
Tickets will be available in the club every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening in July from 7.30 to 9.00 and every Sunday lunchtime in July from 11.30 am to 1.00pm

Go on; give yourselves and your children a treat and join us for this fun day out.

Games News

Our pool team has won through to the Quarterfinals of the Branch knockout competition. They will be playing away to British Rail Club at Wellingborough on 13th July.

We have been losing finalists 3 times. Could this be our year? Our best wishes are with you to bring back that trophy.

And finally

No one can have missed how busy the club has been over the month of June.
We have had the Golden Jubilee celebrations, the World Cup celebrations and tribulations, visiting groups from other clubs and so it goes on.

No matter what hours events have taken place or how long the hours have been, Graham and his staff have not once let us down. Their enthusiasm and professionalism are an example to us all. To every one of them from every one of us we would say they are owed a great debt of gratitude. Thank you!

Supervision of Children – Again

What can we do? There is massive publicity in the press about a man trying to abduct young children in Northampton and some of our parents come and sit in the club and let their children hang about outside the club. The management cannot be held responsible if you; and you know who you are; put your children at risk and the worst happens.

Parents, you must always keep your children in view when you are in the club so that you can supervise, control and protect them.

Thank you.

Race Night

Because many of you have asked we are bringing back our mid-week race nights, with the first night Thursday 12th September. As a change we will be holding the event in the main bar so that everyone can join in and see the races. It is a fun night for a little flutter on the Gee-Gees. As with all these events the more that come, the more the fun. So make this evening a must!

The first race will be 8.30

Quiz Night

The introduction of Aces High at the last quiz night was a great success. It even drowned, almost, the disappointment of not doing our Mastermind round!

So Aces High is here to stay. Our next quiz will be a week early on August 20th as the following week the quizmaster will be on holiday (again!) the following week.

We start at 8.30
Dinner/ Cabaret Evening

Our last dinner cabaret evening was a great success enjoyed by all who attended. The problem was that not nearly enough members attended.

We hope the word has spread about not being there really meant missing out. In that hope another evening has been arranged for Saturday 19th October.

The evening starts at 7.30 with a cracking three-course meal followed by a cabaret.

Mike Taylor is the master of ceremonies and not a mean singer.

Keith (the thief) Charnley is a comedian not to be missed.

Mosaic entertained us with their song and dance routines when the new concert room was officially opened. They were good then; you should see them now!

There will be a raffle to raise funds for the Geriatric ward at Northampton General Hospital; an oft forgotten but very important part of the hospital service.

An extension has been arranged until 11.30pm

All this for only £10 per head. Tickets are available from behind the bar or the Entertainment Committee.

Bingo

Your Management Committee is caught in the horns of a dilemma. More and more of our members are asking for the use of the concert room for wedding, anniversary and birthday celebrations on Saturday evenings and at the same time loyalty is owed to those who play bingo on Saturday evenings.

A suggestion has been put forward that we could play bingo one evening in the week instead of Saturday so that all our members can be accommodated.

Survey forms will be at the ticket table on the two Saturdays bingo is played in August. Your views will be appreciated and taken into account.

Bar refurbishment

Woe, Woe and thrice times Woe. At the time of going to press for the July newsletter everything was in hand and all orders placed for a smooth and effortless refurbishment.

Woe One. The new wall linings were found to be not available until October. We have since found a better lining (at no extra cost) which should be available about the third week in August; as it has to be imported from Spain; to get the contract started.

Woe Two. The improved seating material was discontinued after the order was placed. We have found a more than suitable alternative.

Woe three. Weeks after the new carpet was ordered the manufacturer informed us that it has been discontinued.

Some day we will look back and laugh at this Frankie Howard type scenario. In the mean time please be assured strenuous and very serious efforts are being made to ensure that we will have all the work done by early October.

September 2002

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News September 02

To communicate or not to communicate

That is the question!

At the end of last year your Management Committee took the brave step of instigating this newsletter. Before that time events were publicised on the notice boards and brought to your attention as done deals. With the newsletter we are now informing you about things as they develop rather than when they are done, so that if members wish they can have some input.

This means that when there are hiccups, you the members see them as you never did before. A glaring example is the delays suffered with the bar refurbishment, regarding which we are pleased to say we now have an absolutely firm start date of the first week in September. These delays were well outside the control of management and could not have been foreseen: but we would say that wouldn’t we?

The serious point is that members were given a chance to see the scheme and comment before it got under way. We believe that benefit far outweighs any embarrassment that may be suffered by apologies because of delays. We hope you do too.

The newsletter also brings to members attention matter of concern to either be debated or acted upon.

We have previously published nine newsletters; three of which have mentioned the supervision of children. Some parents still insist on allowing their children to roam the corridors; vandalise the toilets and garden furniture and go to areas excluded to children without their parent’s presence. They also allow children to hang about outside the Club causing a nuisance to people coming and going and be put at risk of abduction or traffic accident.

It could be argued that publishing requests for parental cooperation is seen as a waste of time. However, if parents are brought before the Committee on a charge of not supervising their children and found guilty, they will have no one but themselves to blame if suspended from membership for up to twelve months or expelled. Suspension and expulsion from this club mean suspension and expulsion from every Working Men’s Club.

We hope you agree that these matters are useful and for the good of the club.

Do not forget that if any member wishes to contribute to the newsletter with news or comment, those contributions are welcome. It should be pointed out that inclusion of any item is at the discretion of the editor, but all contributions will be acknowledged and discussed with the contributor before publication.

It is only right to question what we do from time to time. With our opening question “ to communicate or not to communicate?” we believe the answer has to be “ Yes.” We hope you do too.

Quiz Night

The next Quiz night will be held on Tuesday 17th September starting at 8.30pm.

At the last night we saw Aces high could be won. It was won by one of our faithful regulars who shared over £80 with his team – but nothing with his host!

It’s not the money, but the fun and company we hope you come for. Mind you the money is a nice bonus if you get it.

Dinner/ Cabaret

In our last letter full details were given of our Dinner/ Cabaret to be held Saturday 19th October. For a three-course meal and a good evening’s entertainment with a 30-minute extension, tickets are on sale at a snip of £10 each from either the Entertainment Committee or from behind the bar.

All this enjoyment to be the more fulfilling as you have the chance to contribute towards the Geriatric ward of the Northampton General Hospital through a special raffle.

The tickets are selling already- so don’t hang about and risk missing out!

Tote

The Welfare section, under the stewardship of John Fagan, as part of their function to provide sick pay and retired members’ payouts for the section’s members run a weekly tote with a total payout of £150 each week.

If you want to support this section and have the chance of a small windfall, why not have a go at the tote.

Tickets are available from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm Fridays; 11.30 am to 1.30 pm Saturdays and Noon to 1.00 pm Sundays from the Welfare Section Table in the main bar.

Dining at the Club

To eat at Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club is to eat restaurant quality food at Working Men’s Club prices in the atmosphere of your choice.

You can choose from our standard menu, which is changed every six months, or from our extensive range of specials from the boards including seasonal meals such as salads freshly prepared to order. And why not make the meal complete with some good quality inexpensive wine sold either by the glass or bottle.

Through the week you can eat in the bar or select the quieter atmosphere of the lounge with quiet, soothing background music.

Sundays, our function room is given over entirely for meals that can be either traditional Sunday roast or any item from our main menu.

We also have a good children’s menu

Orders will be taken Monday – Thursday Noon to 2.30pm 5.00pm to 9.00pm
Friday Noon to 2.30pm 5.00pm to 8.00pm
Saturday Noon to 8.00pm
Sunday Noon to 5.00pm

We also do sandwiches at these times if you do not want a meal.

And finally

As we go into September and October, our bar refurbishment will be under way. The bar will be open for weekends throughout so we will maintain our full social programme. From Monday morning to Friday lunchtime we will be using the concert room and lounge instead of the bar.

We will keep inconvenience to a minimum and apologise for any disruption caused, but hope that at the end of the day everyone will agree it will have been worthwhile.

The brilliant voice of Fay Jackson is a pleasure not to be missed.

And top that all off with a beautiful three course meal and an extension until 11.30pm.

We are sure you will agree £10 per ticket is well worth it. Tickets will be available from 6th April either from the Entertainment Committee or behind the bar.

Welfare Section

Many members will be aware that this Club has a welfare section that runs the Tote on a weekly basis through the year. We are pleased to announce that the weekly payout has just been increased to £150.

What many may not know is that this section has two other valuable functions looking after the welfare of members who are members of the section.

The first is the availability of 8 weeks’ sickness pay at £10 per week in any year. This is available after 12 months’ membership of the section.

The second is a retired members payout of £10 three times a year for members over 65 years of age.

The annual membership subscription of the Welfare Section is just £4.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the section and wish to know more about eligibility and the rules of the Section please see John Fagan at his table at normal Tote times.

New members

A warm welcome is extended to all those who have just taken up membership. There are still many names on the notice board of people who have not yet collected their cards. Please come soon because further names will not be put for election until most of this list is cleared.

The books will remain open until 30th June. People wishing to join should ensure completed application forms are in the hands of the Secretary by that date.

What a whopper!

Congratulations to Tony Gibson, one of our members who is a member of the Northampton Specimen Group, on a truly fantastic year’s fishing.

Last autumn he caught the British record barbel weighing in at about 19lbs.

Add to that he has been awarded the Fox National award by the Angler’s Mail as best all round angler of the year, and is a hot favourite for the prestigious Angling Times Drennan Cup. Well done Tony!!

Games News

This month the news is of our ladies teams.

The ladies darts A team came third in the Summer league 2001. They then went on to win the winter league 2001/2. L. Page and K. Birch won the charity pairs competition in 2001.

The ladies darts B team is also becoming a force to be reckoned with as they steadily improve their league position.

Last season the ladies skittles had what might be described as not the most successful of seasons. This year they have won their first three games. Winning on top of a good night out can be nothing but good news!

Well done everyone.
----------------------------

All games sections are on the lookout for new members. If you are interested in representing Kingsley Park in any of the following please see our games section secretary, Pete Kirby.

We have teams in the following games: -

Cribbage Airgun Snooker Cricket Pool
Outdoor bowls Men’s skittles Ladies skittles Ladies darts 25’s

Games are at the heart of the life of Working Men’s clubs. We hope our members will ensure they are kept there.

And finally

Our congratulations go to Ken Jones, Jimmy Finucane & John O’Brien on their re-election to the Committee.

Welcome to our two new members, Pete Kirby who is joining the finance section as well as representing the Games Section, and to Chris Billingham who is on entertainment assisting with raffles.

Best wishes go to the full Committee for their endeavours on behalf of all the members for the year ahead.

Please try to pay by 29th January. Do not forget if you do not pay by 25th February your membership will be forfeited and none of us wants that!

Budget price increase

Until last year it has always been the custom to increase bar prices in January each year to account for increases in wages, administration and property management expenses. Your Management Committee has decided to defer this increase until the Brewery annual increases which are normally imposed upon us about March.

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour?

Apparently the answer for some of you is a resounding yes. If it does please do not grind it into the club carpets or stick it on club furniture. Put it in a bin or ashtray when you finish with it. To grind it into the carpets shortens the life of the carpet drastically and the only way to pay for replacement carpets is to increase the price of refreshments.

Disabled facilities

We are pleased to announce that we have acquired two new wheelchairs. If you need the use of one to get around the Club please ask the bar staff. Unfortunately we are not able to let these out of the club premises other than to collect folk from or take them back to their transport outside the Club doors.

Games news

All games sections are now coming to the end of their season in the CIU leagues. The Air-gun finished runners-up once again to Spencer WMC. The skittles section has two games remaining and look like coming third to Spencer and Northampton B at best. Neither crib teams are in the running for places, but the B team has had a better time of it than the A team this season. The pool section has finished in the Town League Pool in the coveted runners-up spot.

Congratulations to all members who are taking part in club games, no matter where you may finish. We hope you all enjoy playing. You are certainly keeping alive a vital part of the spirit of the CIU and this club by your participation.

New members are always welcome to play any of the games in the section. If you are interested please contact Peter Kirby, the games section secretary.

Subscriptions

As stated in the last newsletter anyone who has not paid their subscriptions by 25th February is no longer a member of the club. The E.C. has ruled that re-entry may not be applied for until 2003.

You were warned!

Club cards

It is enshrined in our rules that members and associates should always be in possession of their club cards when on club premises. The authorities (that is the police and courts) are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of unauthorised people attending private members clubs.

Please ensure you always have your cards on you. If the doormen do not know you personally they will ask to see your cards and refuse entry if you do not have them.

.

Price increases

As expected and stated in the January newsletter, the Breweries have reviewed their prices as from 4th March. We must thank both Bass and Carlsberg for their positive contribution in minimising the increase. The result is that our review this year, including the increase for our internal budget, is roughly in line with inflation. The draught beer increases, which will take effect from Friday 8th March are as follows: -

Carling, Carlsberg, Carlsberg Export & Draught Burton Ale all increase by 5p per pint.

Worthington, Allbright, Brew XI, Tetleys & Guinness increase by 4p per pint.

Caffreys is to be introduced as an additional bitter shortly at £1.91 per pint. This is a re-launched product that is both weaker and cheaper than the Caffreys of old.

Negotiations are still in progress concerning spirits and packaged products. A separate notice will be issued when these are concluded.

Opening hours

At the AGM a notice of motion was passed that the Management consider opening the bar all day Mondays and Fridays. After careful consideration it was decided that the opening hours remain unaltered.

Age limit for use of Snooker room

Also at the AGM a notice of motion was passed that the Management consider allowing 13 to 15 year old children to use the snooker room. Again after careful consideration it was agreed that this should be allowed under very strict conditions. First, they may only play with their parents. Second, they may only play on the middle table. Third, they should be tall enough to be able to cue correctly. Fourth, they have no right of access on match nights.

If children are in the room without their parents, and if when playing they are not playing with their parents, their parents will be subject to disciplinary procedures.

And Finally

Congratulations to Ken Taylor who is returned as President and Mick Shaw returned as Vice-President, both un-opposed, for a further two years.

The results of the election of the five Committee men will be posted in the Club when declared by the scrutineers.

December 2001

Kingsley Park Working Men’s Club News

Christmas thank you

Christmas comes but once a year, thank goodness some may say! It is a time of celebration and great expense. Your Committee would like to thank you for your loyalty and patronage over the year and reduce your season’s expenses by cutting the price of all drinks by 10% from 2nd December to 15th December inclusive.

But every silver lining must have a cloud!

On 1st October H P Bulmer put up the price of Strongbow cider. Unchallenged this would have meant an increase in bar prices of 7 pence per pint. However, with the cooperation of Bass Brewers who supply us, we have managed to delay the increase until 1st December and reduce the increase to 4 pence a pint. The new price will be £2.03. But do not forget this will go down by 10% the next day for two weeks from 2nd December.

Christmas plea

Once again we must bring to your attention the minority of parents who are either unwilling or unable to control their children in the Club. Someone’s child set off the fire alarm with severe potential risk to the safety of people as well as property. On a regular basis the ladies toilets are vandalised and young girls have been reported smoking in the toilets. Happenings like these spoil the atmosphere in the club for the majority.

Our plea to you parents is to keep your children under strict supervision at all times for safety’s sake and out of courtesy to the rest of the members. If you are either unable or unwilling to control your children, please do not bring them into the club.

Local children in need

Our annual Christmas extravaganza in aid of local children in need is to take place on Saturday 15th December. There will be comedy, music, a raffle and, of course, Father Christmas. We have it on good authority it is the real one!

Tickets are £4 and they sell like hot cakes. Don’t be disappointed- get yours quickly.
Please note that this is an adults only event. Grown ups enjoy and children benefit!

Panto

Unfortunately this year’s Christmas pantomime is already sold out. We wish everyone lucky enough to have tickets a great afternoon.

There will, however, be a limited supply of sandwiches or baguettes and pork pies available on Boxing Day and 27th December.

And Finally

The Management Committee would like to wish all members, associates and guests who have used the Club over the year, a very happy Christmas and a happy healthy and prosperous New Year.

Also we are sure you would like to join the Management Committee in thanking Graham, our Steward, and his whole team who have worked so hard in the year to make your time in the club enjoyable. With the introduction of cooked food in the middle of the year there has been a lot to learn. The staff have coped magnificently and with a good spirit. Well done and thank you one and all.
